This release adds stored tree backups, linking of single sign-on accounts and AI chat without an embedding model, and fixes two minor privacy issues.

New features

  • Stored backups. Owners can back up a tree on the server and restore its data, settings and users from a stored or uploaded backup. Requires BACKUP_DIR (#1065).
  • Linking single sign-on accounts. Users can link OpenID Connect identities to their existing account, and list and unlink them, by @scotCW (#1051, #1053).
  • AI chat. The assistant no longer needs VECTOR_EMBEDDING_MODEL and sees much more complete records (#1068, #1077).
  • Face detection is much improved, especially for high-resolution images (#1047).
  • Anniversary calendar feed. Covers all anniversary event types, supports filters and is cached, by @elig-45 (#1025).
  • Push subscriptions as groundwork for push notifications, by @elig-45 (#1001).
  • Translated filter rules (#1043) and support for GeoJSON, KML, KMZ and GPX media files (#1052).

Fixes and improvements

  • Much faster relationship calculation in trees with pedigree collapse (#1017)
  • Tasks that change a tree can no longer run concurrently (#1049), and exports read from a consistent snapshot (#1061)
  • Large media archives are streamed instead of loaded into memory, and the archive rate limit is now enforced (#1059, #1066)
  • Faster and more accurate media and people usage tracking, by @jerive (#1037, #1069, #1070)
  • PDF thumbnails are no longer stretched, by @scotCW (#1057)
  • Support for SQLAlchemy 2.1, by @scotCW (#1044, #1063)

Privacy fixes

Users without permission to view private records, such as guests, could see two kinds of private information. No private records were exposed (#1079):

  • Private references in backlinks. If a public object referenced another public object only privately, for example through a private media reference or a note on a private name, the link between them was shown in the backlinks.
  • Private surnames. The surname list included surnames of private people and of private names, without saying whom they belong to.

Upgrade notes

  • Python 3.10 is no longer supported (#1067).
  • The server locale is always English, regardless of LANG (#1042).
  • After an import, the search index is updated in separate background tasks (#1046).

Deprecations

  • Semantic search will be removed in 3.25; full-text search is not affected (#1075).
  • The non-shared PostgreSQL backend (#981) and configuration stored in the database (#1050) will be removed in 4.0.

See the roadmap for details.
