Logarithmic volume slider

The volume slider now uses a logarithmic (cubic) curve instead of a linear one, so low volumes get more of the slider. 50% on the slider is -18 dB. Your current volume level is kept when you update. Toggle it in Settings › Playback › Logarithmic volume.

Windows ARM64 test build

Native ARM64 build of ytm-rs 0.2.22 for Windows on ARM. Pre-release for testing; not offered by the auto-updater.

ytm-rs-portable-0.2.22-arm64.zip runs without installing (data stays in the folder). ytm-rs-setup-0.2.22-arm64.exe installs it like the x64 version. Report problems in an issue.

Search for the right song in Spotify transfer

If a song didn't match cleanly and none of the suggestions are right, click Search YouTube Music on the review card. It opens the normal search page with the song's name already typed in, plus a banner showing which song you're matching. Click any song to use it and you're back in the review on the next one. Clicking a cover just plays it, so you can listen first.

Look over the matches first

When searching finishes, the transfer now stays on the song list instead of jumping straight into the review, so you can scroll through what matched. Press Check songs when you're ready to go through the ones that need a look. All songs in the review takes you back to the list.

Fixes

  • Spotify transfer picks the right recording more often. Song length now counts, so the original wins over a live or compilation version, and a very different length is never treated as a sure match.
  • Titles that start with brackets, like "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay", can match now. Before, they never did.
  • Artists match without a leading "The", with a small typo, or as part of a group, and accents no longer get in the way.
  • Songs YouTube lists as "Original title - English title" now find the artist's own song instead of an English-titled cover.

Download songs

Every song's menu has Download now. It saves the song as an .m4a with its title, artists, album and cover art, at the best quality your account gets (256 kbps with YouTube Premium). Downloaded songs play from the file, so they work offline, and their menu offers Show in folder.

Songs go to Music\ytm-rs. You can pick another folder in Settings → Downloads.

Last.fm

Connect your account in Settings → Connections → Last.fm and ytm-rs scrobbles what you play. Songs show as now playing on your profile right away and scrobble once they've played half their length or four minutes. If you're offline, scrobbles wait and go out with the next one.

Pick your output device

Settings → Playback → Output device sends the music to a specific speaker, headset or virtual device, like Voicemeeter or SteelSeries Sonar, instead of the Windows default. If that device isn't connected, the music plays on the default until it's back.

Fixes

  • Bluetooth headphones and other devices now take over when they connect, and playback keeps working after one disconnects. Before, music could stay on the speakers, or play/next/previous stopped doing anything until you restarted the app.

Crossfade when skipping

Turn on Settings → Playback → Crossfade when skipping and pressing next fades into the following song too, not just when a song runs into the next. Going back or picking a song still switches right away. It's off by default and uses the same length as Crossfade songs.

If you skip again while a fade is still going, ytm-rs cuts straight to the new song at full volume instead of stacking songs on top of each other.

Crossfade

Turn on Settings → Playback → Crossfade songs and each song blends into the next. It happens when a song runs into the next; skipping still switches right away. The length slider goes from 1 to 12 seconds.

Fixes

  • Previous now starts the song over right after launch. The song from last time was restored paused, and Previous used to do nothing until you'd pressed play.

Pick your font

Settings → Appearance → Font changes the font for the whole app and the lyrics. Choose one of the fonts that come with ytm-rs or any font installed on your PC, including ones made for your language. Theme's font keeps whatever your theme uses.

Skip non-music parts

Turn on Settings → Playback → Skip non-music parts and ytm-rs jumps over talking, skits and sponsor breaks in music videos, using the parts the SponsorBlock community has marked. Album songs don't have any, so they play as usual.

Fixes

  • Vietnamese, Greek and Cyrillic text now shows in one consistent font. Accented letters used to come out in a different, thinner font from the rest of the word.
  • Bold text in other scripts, like Arabic, Hindi or Thai, is now actually bold.
  • Songs started from a card on Home now get synced lyrics. Before, some showed only plain lyrics.

Use a proxy

Settings → Network can send ytm-rs through a proxy: your system's, none at all, or one you type in (HTTP or SOCKS, with a username and password if it needs one). The Test button tells you whether it connects and whether YouTube Music is available where it comes out.

It works with Tor too. Most Tor exits land somewhere YouTube Music isn't offered, so ytm-rs quietly switches to one where it is.

Portable version

Every release now also comes as a portable zip. Unzip it anywhere, even a USB stick, and run ytm-rs.exe: nothing gets installed, your settings stay in a data folder right next to it, and it updates itself in place like the installed app. Your sign-in is kept by Windows, so on another PC you sign in again.

Lyrics text size

Settings → Lyrics → Text size makes the lyrics larger or smaller, on top of whatever size your theme uses.

Fixes

  • Songs no longer skip to the next one when the connection drops mid-song. ytm-rs picks the song back up where it stopped.
  • Your Library now shows all your saved albums and playlists, not just the first page (thanks @vshlapakov).
  • The playing bars on the current song move smoothly instead of jittering.
  • Full screen opens cleanly, without a flash of the wrong colors.
  • Album art shimmers softly while it loads, then fades in.
  • Long mixes use far less memory. A two-hour mix now needs about half as much.
  • A server that stops answering can no longer leave covers stuck loading.
  • Listen together notices a dropped connection and reconnects, even in long sessions.
  • The log file no longer records stream addresses, which included your IP address.

Pick your app icon

Settings → App icon has ten icons to choose from, including the classic smiley. Your pick shows on the window, the taskbar, the tray and your Start menu and desktop shortcuts, and it stays through updates. A pinned taskbar icon can take a moment to catch up.

Your plays count on YouTube Music

Songs you play in ytm-rs now show up in your YouTube Music history, so they count toward your recommendations, Listen again and your year-end Recap. It works whenever you're signed in, with nothing to turn on. If your YouTube history is paused, nothing is recorded.

Fixes

  • Editing a playlist now opens a proper dialog for its name, description and visibility, instead of a bare window. Creating a playlist and adding a song to one got the same treatment.
  • Now playing has one menu instead of two. The ⋯ button holds the song's options, plus the lyrics source, translation, romanization and timing while lyrics are showing, so the header stays clean.
  • The Queue button in the player bar works while now playing is open, switching to Up next.
  • Switching between Lyrics and Up next fades smoothly instead of cutting.
  • The Translate into language picker in Settings matches the rest of the app instead of a plain black list.
  • When YouTube briefly refuses requests, ytm-rs waits a moment and tries again instead of showing an error.
