Kobo Sync - Download Fails

What Went Wrong?

Hey there. Thanks for the work in getting this app up and running, I really appreciate it. I believe there is currently a bug in syncing books from Grimmory to a Kobo. When a sync is run, the books appear on the device in the books list, but the cover doesn't load and there is no file sent to the device. It had a download button on the device, but when a download is attempted, a dialogue box appears and says download failed. No it appears to not be syncing any actual data.

How Can We Reproduce This?

1. Add book to Kobo shelf on Grimmory
2. Add Grimmory API to kobo .conf file
3. Eject Kobo and sync
4. Tap on book to attempt to read

What Should Have Happened?

After a sync occurs, the metadata and kepub file should be downloaded to the Kobo device.

I just updated from the booklore image to the grimmory 2.3.0 docker image using docker-compose and was able to add books to the Kobo bookshelf and sync to an Aura H2O. No other configuration changed.

Yes, docker image v2.3.0.

Convert to KEPUB was enabled. I disabled the Convert to KEPUB setting and tested syncing some different books, but the result was the same. The books appear on the device, but have a download button and fail to download. The are also listed as KEPUB files on the device despite the files on the server being EPUB.

I tried setting up a fresh Grimmory instance with a new DB instead of using my existing DB from the app Grimmory was forked from. I added a few test books and updated my Kobo .conf file with the new API code, the result was also the same.

Happy to do some troubleshooting and testing, just let me know what might be helpful!

In theory the kobo reader sync SHOULD be able to handle this, but it came to mind:

Did the IP or DNS for your API instance change? If that "book" is old - such as from when your instance had a different IP or DNS record - then the metadata may be pointing at an old download URL. The download URL is associated with when the book was last synced, not what the current API endpoint is. I did dig around in the KoboReader.sqlite but could not find any way to "test" this.

So: Is the Kobo reader still set up from an old instance of Booklore that had a different host / IP? You may be able to test this by changing any piece of metadata on the book & running the sync. If the book downloads fine after that, then it's likely the issue.

You may be able to get the sync to work again by regenerating the sync token and updating it on your kobo config. If that doesn't work, you can either "update" all the metadata in your library to force a sync OR you can try resetting your kobo and setting up the sync from scratch.

If that isn't the case, we can try to enable debug logs. You can enable debug logs via setting the environment variables LOGGING_LEVEL_ORG_BOOKLORE to debug. In your compose file, you can do that via the env fields.

Thanks for the suggestions! The IP and URL is still the same. I changed up the URL but same results. I changed some metadata for a few books and synced them, but also same results. The book title changes but still cannot be downloaded.

Some of the entries show up as http instead of https, not sure if that matters? My Grimmory API is accessed via a named https URL. There also seems to be 2 different API keys listed under storeapi.kobo.com, both of which don't match my Grimmory API key but perhaps that is fine. I don't know much here.

Edit: My Grimmory API endpoint shows a 500 error.

Do you have a redirect from http to https for those routes? Since it's generating some of the URLs as http, maybe the kobo sync is trying to fetch at http and it's not redirecting? Guessing a little bit here as it does seem like http is being generated for the base URL for some reason.

Nope, no redirects setup. My reverse proxy just has a https for Grimmory. I also double checked the Kobo .conf file and it only has https locations listed. I tried deleting the .conf and restarting the Kobo so it would generate a new file. then I updated the api_endpoint again, but that didn't change anything unfortunately.

Right - but it looks like Grimmory is building the URLs for download as HTTP instead of HTTPS. As right now it seems like Kobo is being told to connect over HTTP and then it fails because you aren't running anything on HTTP. With an HTTP to HTTPS redirect, Kobo sync should follow it and be able to download.

If you set up an HTTPS redirect, maybe that will mitigate the issue? And confirm that's what needs to be fixed.

If you have a reverse proxy, it's possible that X-Forwarded-Proto isn't being properly set so the URLs don't know that they're supposed to be https.

I use Pangolin as my reverse-proxy, which technically uses Traefik and apparently I already have the redirect-to-https middleware setup. Sounds like Pangolin comes with that setup by default. I don't have any custom headers added but I could try adding that, but I don't know what I would need to put. If it helps, this issue began happening the last time I updated my Booklore instance which would have been pretty close to the last version of that one. So I don't think it was an issue added by Grimmory, it was a fairly recent Booklore issue. Another potentially pointless detail is that I am in Canada? I remember one of the first iterations of Kobo Sync added to Booklore only worked for Kobo store accounts in the USA and didn't work for a few Canadian users initially.

Well, the real weird thing here is that Grimmory is not logging anything for a request coming in for the download. I'd expect to see that. Does pangolin have any logs about the requests being made & where they're going?

It went into a weird authorization loop. It would log me in, then log me out in rapid sucession. Here was the Grimmory log when it happened. This was reapeated 8 times in 10 seconds.
