Fluiddesk v2.0
FluidDesk
A lightweight, fully customizable live wallpaper application designed specifically for Linux Mint and built using Python and PyQt.
FluidDesk delivers smooth, dynamic background animations while prioritizing system efficiency—utilizing less than 25% of the system resources of competing applications. It operates completely offline with zero telemetry, tracking, or data collection to protect your privacy.
Features
- High Performance: Designed from the ground up to keep CPU, RAM, and GPU usage minimal.
- Mint Aesthetic: Features a native mint color scheme that integrates beautifully with the Linux Mint desktop environment.
- System Tray Integration: Runs quietly in the background with status actions, settings, and indicators accessible directly from your system tray.
- Extensive Plugin Architecture: Includes a robust collection of plugins to customize your live wallpaper behavior.
- Privacy First: Completely self-contained and runs 100% offline. No analytics, no phone-home connections.
- Built in Conversion: Due to the use of Chromium architecture, .webm format is needed for video playback. To make things easier, we built in a conversion tool directly to the fluiddesk UI.
Installation
FluidDesk is officially distributed via Github as an appimage. Download the appimage from the latest release. Right click the downloaded appimage and select properties. In the properties menu make the app executable. You can now open and execute the program.
After executing the program for the first time, it will close almost right away. This is the program creating the proper directories necessary for video and preset storage. Before re-opening the program, add some .webm files to the ~/Videos/LiveWallpaper directory. A minimum of one video is required for the live wallpaper engine to run. If you can not find any good .webm files, you can add .mp4 files, however they will not play as they are on the chromium engine. In the UI there is a conversion tool that will convert and automatically add your videos in the playable .webm format.
Included in this release is also the python file (fluiddesk.py) if you wish to review the source code or run from a container.
Demo Videos and Images
Disclaimer: When recording demo videos, I used a screen recorder which affected the visible resource consumption on screen. I included static screenshots as well to give a better idea of what the actual consumption should be when running the program. Additionally, I am using a dual monitor setup (one vertical and one horizontal) which is why there is blank space at the top of the page. I would love to see your creations and screenshots using fluiddesk!
Tutorial
A brief tutorial for Fluiddesk is attached in the binaries of this version. The tutorial shows how to open and close the program, as well as some fluiddesk features.
