Mangabound v0.1.0-alpha.11

An alpha: the installers are not code-signed. How to install, and what to expect from the system, is in the installation guide. SHA256SUMS checks the downloads.

Before you update

  • Every conversion changes. mangapress goes from 0.6.0 to 0.7.2 and makes pages the way Kindle Comic Converter 12 does. In KOReader, EPUB pages are no longer stretched (they came out 11 to 15% wider than drawn). Convert again the books you made before.
  • Linux: the .deb, .rpm and Arch packages of alpha.10 could not convert for a normal user. Fixed; install this one over it.
  • Windows: unsaved books and attached covers move from the installer's folder to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Mangabound Data on the first start. Nothing is replaced.
  • Sharing now serves every book that is ready to save, old unsaved conversions included. They cannot be deleted while shared.

Added

  • The options of mangapress 0.7: page layout in five sections, image options in two, a Cover section, Use the images as they are, and Name the book .epub for a Kobo. Color now follows the device.
  • A cover of your own for each book, on the details page.
  • The results say what mangapress noticed (small pages, pages converted already, files that are not images), once for each kind.
  • Use pt-br on the details page when the folder names declare a language. Language tags are written in BCP 47 form (pt-BR).
  • Chapter folders left out because their names are not chapter names (Omake, Ch.004 [GroupA]) are named in the queue and the editor, for a folder and for each title of a library.
  • A SHA256SUMS file among the release files.

Changed

  • A Kobo's EPUB is named .kepub.epub, as Kindle Comic Converter names it. A loose CBZ takes its cover from a Covers folder beside it.
  • Converting some titles of a library binds only those, not the whole library first.
  • Saving to a FAT or exFAT drive needs room for the book once, not twice.
  • Saving volumes keeps the other keys of mangabind.json. A file that is not valid JSON is refused, not overwritten.
  • The validated plan names the books the run will really make.
  • Cancel stops the item that is running. A question that opens in place takes keyboard focus. A screen reader hears one message for each tenth of the work, not one for each page.

Fixed

  • Two copies of one chapter: the editor refuses to place one (mangabind skips all copies), and the results say what a book lacks.
  • A title over 200 bytes, or an option out of range (gamma 18 for 1.8), is refused at the start. One bad value no longer drops all the saved options.
  • Number fields: clearing one and typing 2 gives 2, not 12. A decimal comma is accepted.
  • Sharing: Stop sharing ends the downloads in progress, an idle connection is dropped after a minute, quitting does not wait for a stalled download, and a malformed address is not found instead of an error. A title with a character XML forbids no longer breaks the catalog.
  • What a killed run left behind is cleared at the next start.
  • Names that differ only in how an accent is written are no longer taken for different ones.
  • The window no longer shows a screen for an item that is gone, and an option chosen before the saved ones had loaded is kept.

Security

  • A link in a manga folder is followed only if it leads to a file inside it (mangabind 0.6.1).
  • The share answers only to an address of your computer (the numbers the app shows, localhost, the computer's name), so a web page cannot reach it through your browser.
  • The window loads from the app's own address, talks only to the app and has only the permissions it uses. One copy of the app runs at a time.

Bundled: mangabind v0.6.1, mangapress v0.7.2. Full changelog

@github-actions github-actions released this 02 Oct 02:41
7507bf1

Superseded by v0.1.0-alpha.11. Problems of this release that it fixes: EPUB pages stretched in KOReader; Linux packages that cannot convert for a normal user (confirmed on this release's .deb; meanwhile run sudo chmod 755 on the resources/toolchain/linux-x64 folder of the install: /usr/lib/mangabound/ for the .deb, /opt/mangabound/ for Arch; for the .rpm, rpm -ql mangabound | grep toolchain shows where); on Windows, unsaved books kept in the installer's folder.

Mangabound v0.1.0-alpha.10

Mangabound is a desktop app that turns manga you already have — folders of chapters or .cbz files — into books ready for your e-reader.

This is an alpha. There is no auto-update yet, and the installers are not code-signed. See "Known limitations" before installing.

If you share a folder over the network with KOReader, please update: this release fixes a flaw in sharing that is present in v0.1.0-alpha.9 and every earlier release.

What's new since v0.1.0-alpha.9

  • A fix for the network sharing, which could send a file from outside the shared folder. In alpha.9 and earlier, a folder's catalog (.mangabound/library.json) could name a file outside the shared folder, and the sharing server would send it to whoever asked for it. A link (a symlink or a junction) inside the folder could lead out the same way. Both are closed: the server now sends only files that are really inside the folder you chose. Reaching the flaw took a folder with a catalog or links that someone else made, that you then shared, and a device on your network (with the password, if you set one), so it was unlikely, but the file would have been read with your own permissions. One consequence: a subfolder that is a link to another place, such as another disk, is no longer shared. Share the folder the books really live in instead; the app's log says which book was left out.
  • Errors say what really failed. A full drive, or a file or folder the app was not allowed to use, used to be reported as "the sharing server could not be started". They now say that a file or folder could not be used, or that the drive is full, and the real cause is written to the app's log.
  • Saving the catalog, the settings and the record of saved books is more careful. They are written to a temporary file beside the real one and then put in place, and the app tries again for a moment if another program, such as an antivirus, is holding the file.
  • A title or an author that starts with a hyphen no longer stops the conversion. -Hidden Title used to end with a message about invalid arguments.
  • A book whose title starts with dots can be saved to a library. ...And so on used to fail with "not inside the selected library".
  • The title bar no longer says "Desktop".

Behind the scenes the app's main screen was split into smaller parts, and the build tools were brought up to date. There is nothing to do about either.

Linux, Arch, x64 mangabound-0.1.0_alpha.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst A direct download, not an AUR submission — see below.

No AppImage is provided for this release.

Installing

Windows: download Mangabound-0.1.0-alpha.10.Setup.exe and run it. The installer is not code-signed, so Windows may identify it as coming from an unrecognized publisher. If you prefer not to run an installer, download the portable .zip, unzip it, and run mangabound.exe directly.

macOS (Apple Silicon): download the .zip, unzip it, and drag Mangabound.app to your Applications folder. The app is not signed or notarized, so macOS may block its first launch.

Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives: download the .deb and install it with your usual tool, for example:

sudo apt install ./mangabound_0.1.0.alpha.10_amd64.deb

Fedora, RHEL, and derivatives: download the .rpm and install it with your usual tool, for example:

sudo dnf install ./mangabound-0.1.0.alpha.10-1.x86_64.rpm

Arch, and derivatives: download the .pkg.tar.zst and install it with pacman, for example:

sudo pacman -U ./mangabound-0.1.0_alpha.10-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

This is a direct download built by this project's CI, not a submission to the AUR. Pacman resolves the app's runtime dependencies from your usual repositories.

Security prompts

The Windows installer is not code-signed, and the macOS app is not signed or notarized. Both operating systems may show a security warning; do not disable either operating system's protection globally.

The published files of this release were not downloaded and opened by hand after publishing, so the exact prompts are still not documented. What was checked is what the project's CI does for every change: the installers are built on Windows, macOS and Linux, the packaged app is run on all three systems, including under Wayland, and the .deb and the Arch package are installed and launched with the sandbox on. That last step only reports what it saw and never fails a build, and a launch does not show that a conversion works: see the audit of 2026-10-04 (finding P3-01) for what it missed.

What's bundled

Mangabound includes two pinned command-line tools; nothing is downloaded after installation:

  • mangabind v0.6.0 — groups chapters into volumes, can bind the whole series into one .cbz for conversion, and reports how many pages it has copied.
  • mangapress v0.6.0 — converts for your e-reader and builds the nested EPUB table of contents.

Both are checksum-verified at build time, and again every time the app starts.

Known limitations

  • Combining the whole series into one book supports EPUB only, not CBZ or PDF.
  • The author is written into EPUB and PDF books only; a CBZ carries no author.
  • Pending books are local to this app installation and are not a permanent backup. Keep exported files in a safe location. Once a completed run has been closed and cleaned up, or explicitly deleted, deleted exports require reprocessing.
  • A subfolder of a shared folder that is a link to a place outside it is not shared.
  • No automatic updates; download and install each new release manually.
  • No code signing or notarization on any platform, and no checksum file or build attestation is published with the files yet.
  • macOS builds support Apple Silicon only, not Intel Macs.
  • No AppImage in this alpha.
  • The Arch package is a direct download; there is no AUR submission yet.

Mangabound v0.1.0-alpha.9

Mangabound is a desktop app that turns manga you already have — folders of chapters or .cbz files — into books ready for your e-reader.

This is an alpha. There is no auto-update yet, and the installers are not code-signed. See "Known limitations" before installing.

What's new since v0.1.0-alpha.8

  • Books with the same name never replace each other. Two books that ended up with the same file name in one run, for example two Vol.01.cbz from different folders, used to overwrite each other silently. Now each one is kept, the later ones as Name (2), and the same rule applies when saving into a folder that already holds a file of that name.
  • Title, author and language for each book, on its own page. Every item in the queue, and every title of a library, has a new button that opens a page for that book alone. A series is named <Title> - Vol.NN per volume; a single book uses the title as typed. Title and author are gone from the advanced options, where they applied to every book of the run at once. The EPUB language option stays there as the default, and each book can override it.
  • Find the author online, only when you ask. On that page, "Find author" searches an online source for the title you typed and lets you pick the author. You choose the source at that moment; nothing is chosen for you and nothing is sent until you click. If nothing matches, the page says so and points at the title, since extra characters in a folder name are the usual reason. Every online request now gives up after 15 seconds instead of waiting forever.
  • The author and language stay with the folder. They are saved in the folder's mangabind.json, so adding the same folder, or a library, next time brings them back. Only those two keys are written; the rest of that file is left as it was, and mangabind ignores them. If the folder cannot be written to, a notice says so and the details stay for the session.

What's new since v0.1.0-alpha.7

  • Live progress while volume files are built. The first stage of a conversion no longer sits on a single message. While mangabind builds the volume files, the running screen shows which volume it is on and how many pages have been copied, taken from what mangabind actually reports rather than an estimate. It covers a single title and a whole library.

What's new since v0.1.0-alpha.6

  • Faster conversion of separate volumes. Mangabound now converts a bounded number of volumes at once, adapting the limit to the computer's CPU and memory. Volumes and catalog entries remain in order. A single book for the whole series is unaffected.
  • Clearer progress. The main progress display stays stable while several volumes run. Expand the details to see each volume's progress and saving state.
  • Remove unwanted ready books. Delete a pending conversion from the Ready books list after confirming. Copies already saved to another folder are not deleted. Deletion is unavailable while that run is converting, saving, or being shared.

What's new since v0.1.0-alpha.5

  • Process first, save when ready. You no longer need to choose an output folder on the queue screen. After conversion, save one book with "Save as…" or export every book with "Save all to folder…". You can also share the converted books over OPDS without saving them first.
  • Save again without reprocessing. The results screen keeps its save actions available. If you chose the wrong destination or removed the exported files, you can export again while the pending books are still available. Existing files are not overwritten.
  • Recover pending books. Converted books are retained locally while they await saving, including across app restarts. If a library-index update fails after a copy, the pending original remains available for another attempt.

macOS (Apple Silicon): download the .zip, unzip it, and drag Mangabound.app to your Applications folder. The app is not signed or notarized, so macOS may block its first launch.

Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives: download the .deb and install it with your usual tool, for example:

sudo apt install ./mangabound_0.1.0.alpha.6_amd64.deb

Fedora, RHEL, and derivatives: download the .rpm and install it with your usual tool, for example:

sudo dnf install ./mangabound-0.1.0.alpha.6-1.x86_64.rpm

Arch, and derivatives: download the .pkg.tar.zst and install it with pacman, for example:

sudo pacman -U ./mangabound-0.1.0_alpha.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

This is a direct download built by this project's CI, not a submission to the AUR. Pacman resolves the app's runtime dependencies from your usual repositories.

Security prompts

The Windows installer is not code-signed, and the macOS app is not signed or notarized. Both operating systems may show a security warning. We will document the exact prompts and per-app steps after testing the published files; do not disable either operating system's protection globally.

What's bundled

Mangabound includes two pinned command-line tools; nothing is downloaded after installation:

  • mangabind v0.5.0 — groups chapters into volumes and can bind the whole series into one .cbz for conversion.
  • mangapress v0.6.0 — converts for your e-reader and builds the nested EPUB table of contents.

Both are checksum-verified at build time and again the first time the app runs.

Known limitations

  • Combining the whole series into one book supports EPUB only, not CBZ or PDF.
  • Pending books are local to this app installation and are not a permanent backup. Keep exported files in a safe location. Once a completed run has been closed and cleaned up, deleted exports require reprocessing.
  • No automatic updates; download and install each new release manually.
  • No code signing or notarization on any platform.
  • macOS builds support Apple Silicon only, not Intel Macs.
  • No AppImage in this alpha.
  • The Arch package is a direct download; there is no AUR submission yet.

@github-actions github-actions released this 28 Sep 03:53
f577c22

Superseded by v0.1.0-alpha.11. Problems of this release that it fixes: EPUB pages stretched in KOReader; Linux packages that cannot convert for a normal user (confirmed on alpha.10's .deb, and the others are built the same way; meanwhile run sudo chmod 755 on the resources/toolchain/linux-x64 folder of the install: /usr/lib/mangabound/ for the .deb, /opt/mangabound/ for Arch; for the .rpm, rpm -ql mangabound | grep toolchain shows where); a flaw in network sharing (see the notes of v0.1.0-alpha.10).

Mangabound v0.1.0-alpha.5

Mangabound is a desktop app that turns manga you already have — folders of chapters or .cbz files — into books ready for your e-reader.

This is an alpha. There is no auto-update yet, and the installers are not code-signed. See "Known limitations" before installing.

What's new since v0.1.0-alpha.4

  • Single-book mode is now on the queue screen. Select "Create one book for the series" beside the process steps to produce one EPUB with volumes and chapters in its table of contents. While it is selected, Mangabound keeps both steps on and locks the format to EPUB, with explanations beside the controls. In a library, each manga series gets its own EPUB. The previous setting is carried over when upgrading.
  • Clearer guidance and settings. The queue now links to "Advanced conversion options" instead of naming the underlying tool. Import guidance is shorter, optional fields show their effective defaults, and single-book notices use the same treatment across screens. The queue and options pages have one content scrollbar each.

What's new since v0.1.0-alpha.3

  • One EPUB for a whole series. In mangapress options, check "Bind the whole series as one volume" to combine all mapped volumes into one EPUB. The table of contents has expandable volumes with their chapters underneath. This option is EPUB-only for now; selecting it while using CBZ or PDF switches the output to EPUB and explains why.
  • Restore individual settings. Changed options are marked and have their own restore-default control, alongside the existing reset-all action.
  • Remember the sharing network interface. When you choose Ethernet, a VPN, or another interface for your OPDS catalog, Mangabound remembers that choice for the next time it is available.

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Sep 21:05

Mangabound v0.1.0-alpha.3

Mangabound is a desktop app that turns manga you already have — folders of chapters, or .cbz files — into books ready for your e-reader.

This is an alpha. Expect rough edges: no auto-update yet, and the installers aren't code-signed. See "Known limitations" below before you install.

What's new since v0.1.0-alpha.2

  • Arch Linux is now a supported platform, via a direct .pkg.tar.zst download — see "Installing" below.
  • A portable Windows build: unzip and run, no installer, no admin rights needed — an alternative to the Setup wizard for anyone who'd rather not run an installer at all.
  • A settings-save reliability fix. On Windows, another process briefly holding a lock on the settings file (a real-time antivirus scan, a search indexer) could make a save fail outright instead of just waiting a moment and succeeding. Saves now retry briefly before giving up.
  • Accessibility: focus now moves sensibly between screens. Moving to a new screen, or starting a conversion, moves keyboard focus to that screen's heading so screen readers and keyboard navigation land somewhere sensible instead of staying wherever focus happened to be before.

Supported platforms

Windows x64 Mangabound-0.1.0-alpha.3.Setup.exe, or the portable Mangabound-win32-x64-0.1.0-alpha.3.zip

Linux, Arch, x64 mangabound-0.1.0_alpha.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst A direct download, not an AUR submission — see below.

No AppImage is provided for this release.

Installing

Windows: download Mangabound-0.1.0-alpha.3.Setup.exe and run it. The installer is not code-signed, so Windows will identify it as coming from an unrecognized publisher. If you'd rather skip the installer entirely, download the portable .zip instead, unzip it anywhere, and run mangabound.exe directly — nothing is written outside that folder except your own settings and converted books.

macOS (Apple Silicon): download the .zip, unzip it, and drag Mangabound.app to your Applications folder. The app is not signed or notarized, so macOS will block its first launch by default.

Debian, Ubuntu, and derivatives: download the .deb and install it with your usual tool, for example:

sudo apt install ./mangabound_0.1.0.alpha.3_amd64.deb

Fedora, RHEL, and derivatives: download the .rpm and install it with your usual tool, for example:

sudo dnf install ./mangabound-0.1.0.alpha.3-1.x86_64.rpm

Arch, and derivatives: download the .pkg.tar.zst and install it with pacman, for example:

sudo pacman -U ./mangabound-0.1.0_alpha.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

This is a direct download built by this project's own CI, not a submission to the AUR — pacman will resolve and install the app's runtime dependencies from your usual repositories.

Security prompts

The installers are not code-signed or notarized yet. Windows SmartScreen will warn about an unrecognized publisher, and macOS Gatekeeper will block an unidentified developer by default. We will document the exact prompts and per-app bypass steps after testing the published files; do not disable either operating system's protection globally.

Linux installs through .deb, .rpm, or pacman are not expected to show an equivalent prompt.

What's bundled

Mangabound includes two pinned command-line tools; nothing is downloaded after installation:

  • mangabind v0.4.0 — groups chapters into volumes.
  • mangapress v0.5.0 — converts a volume for your e-reader.

Both are checksum-verified at build time and again the first time the app runs.

Known limitations

  • No automatic updates; download and install each new release manually.
  • No code signing or notarization on any platform.
  • macOS builds support Apple Silicon only, not Intel Macs.
  • No AppImage in this alpha.
  • The Arch package is a direct download; there is no AUR submission yet.

Mangabound v0.1.0-alpha.2

Mangabound is a desktop app that turns manga you already have — folders of chapters, or .cbz files — into books ready for your e-reader.

This is a bugfix alpha. It fixes a Windows startup failure in v0.1.0-alpha.1 that could leave Mangabound running without any visible window after launching it again from the Start menu. Windows users should upgrade to this release.

Fixed

  • Upgraded Electron from 44.4.3 to 44.4.5, past the upstream Windows window-visibility regression.
  • Removed the hidden-window startup path: Mangabound now opens immediately with a background matching the app while its interface loads.
  • Kept explicit handling for a page that fails to load or a renderer that crashes during initial startup, without terminating an already-running session.
