2026-10-18. The brief flow asked its four questions and then offered a test, a prototype or "Go deeper".
Whether the project is a solo hobby, a solo product or a team product was asked only inside Go deeper, so a
builder who picked the test or a prototype was never asked. project_type stayed empty and every confidence
bar ran at the base meant for a team shipping to strangers. On the maintainer's own hobby project (plugin
0.317.5, 2026-10-09 to 10-18) the first L0 gate noted "project_type unset, so no adaptation" and held it to
0.9 instead of solo_hobby's 0.63, until he raised it himself: "this question should come in pretty early to
prevent a hobby project to be demanded scores almost impossible for a weekend project". The README promises a
weekend project "a few lines each, not a week of work".
What changed
/mycelium:interview's brief flow asks the scope in one line before question 1 ("is this a solo hobby,
a solo product, or a team product?"), writesproject_typethe same turn, and says back in one line what
the answer changes. Not knowing is allowed: it stays empty and the gates ask again.- Go deeper's classification confirms a scope already set instead of asking it again.
/mycelium:diamond-progressand/mycelium:diamond-assessask the same line before ruling when
project_typeis empty, and never apply the base threshold silently. If the person declines, the ruling
says the bar is unadapted because the scope is unknown./mycelium:startand/mycelium:setupannounce the extra line.- Tests:
tests/python/test_scope_is_asked_before_the_brief.py, 5 tests, written first and seen failing.
Considered and not done
- Ask it after question 4, or in the "Where to next?" menu. It would keep the four questions first, but
a builder who leaves before the menu is never asked, and the maintainer ruled for early. - Only the gate backstop. The first gate can come days after the brief, and the builder plans the next
move from the brief without knowing the bar it will be held to. Kept as the backstop for projects that
started before this release. - Infer the scope from the brief's answers. The maintainer's case had hints (his son, no agents wanted)
and none said hobby; a guessed classification written as fact is the filler the canvas rules out. - Default an empty scope to solo_hobby. It would lower the bar for teams without anyone saying so.
- A script that flags an empty
project_type. No script reads it today; the gates that apply it are
skill instructions, so the ask lives there. Whether solo_hobby's own bar is right for a weekend project is
a separate question and is not changed here.
