3.3.1: PHP Version Hint, Friendlier Tooltips

@tvcnet tvcnet released this 16 Oct 21:20

When a site breaks and it isn't a plugin, the PHP version is often the real clue. This release points that out, and makes every link easier to understand.

What's new

  • "It's not one of your plugins" now shows the PHP version the site is running, and asks whether your host just changed it. A theme or must-use plugin that can't handle a new PHP version breaks a site just like a plugin conflict does.
  • "hacked site" on that screen is now a link to hackrepair.com. Hover it and you'll see "Contact Jim Now?"
  • Every link and link-style button, on the Fix page and in wp-admin, now has a tooltip that says what a click does. Links that open another site say so.

Also fixed

  • The ZIP now uses normal file permissions, so images and scripts load on hosts that keep permissions when they unpack it.

Upgrading
Update from the Plugins screen, or download the ZIP below. Nothing to set up. Your settings and activity log are untouched.

Simpler names: Troubleshoot is now Fix, and the emergency address is shorter (.../hackrepair-plugin-detective/fix/). Bookmarks to the old address need replacing; the new one is under Tools > Plugin Detective

3.2.1 – Find the plugin, check its background, send the report

@tvcnet tvcnet released this 15 Oct 02:07

What's new

Full-screen workspace. The troubleshooter now uses the whole window. What to do next sits on the left two-thirds and your live site on the right third, on every screen.

Background check on the plugin it finds. Is there a newer version? Has wordpress.org closed it? Has it gone two years without an update? Plus any known security holes in the version you have, how serious they are, and whether updating fixes them. Only the plugin's folder name is sent out, and answers are cached for 12 hours. Add define( 'HRPD_NO_BACKGROUND_CHECK', true ); to wp-config.php to turn it off.

Case report you can send. A plain-English summary of the session, the background check, and your site details. Copy it or download it as a .txt and send it to the plugin's developer, your web person, or The Hack Repair Guy.

Delete this plugin. A new button next to "Keep it switched off" and "Turn it back on". It asks first, then removes the problem plugin's files and puts everything else back. Its saved settings stay in your database.

Screenshots tab in the "View details" window.

Fixed

  • The background check no longer says a plugin "gets its updates from false". When an author has switched off update checks, it now says so in plain English.

Upgrading

Update from the Plugins page. Nothing to configure. Needs WordPress 5.8+ and PHP 7.4+.
