v2.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 23 Oct 07:27

TextTemplateManager 2.4.0

A hotkey-driven text-template paste tool for Windows: organize reusable snippets in folders, give them shortcuts, and paste them into any application from a global Quick Paste window.

Install

Get TextTemplateManager from the Microsoft Store. The Store installs and updates it; no administrator rights are needed. In a company it can also be deployed with winget or Intune (see the Administrator & Deployment Guide below).

Coming from TextTemplateManager 1: your templates and settings are backed up at the first start and imported in one step if you choose so; version 1's data folder is left as it was.

Note — Remote Desktop (RDP): If TextTemplateManager runs on both your local computer and a remote computer you connect to over RDP, the global Quick Paste hotkey always opens Quick Paste on the local computer — Windows delivers a registered global hotkey locally, so it never reaches the remote session. Give each machine a different Quick Paste hotkey, or run only one instance, to avoid the clash.

What's new in this release

Help and problem reports in the app, and a website for TextTemplateManager.

New

  • Settings ▸ Support: help from the website, and how to report a problem, suggest a feature or report a security vulnerability, by e-mail or on GitHub. The e-mail opens in your mail app with the questions already in it and the app and Windows version filled in; GitHub needs a GitHub account.
  • Export logs (Settings ▸ Support) saves the logs for a problem report as one .zip file: the app's update and crash logs, the installed version and update policies, and the last 14 days of Microsoft Store, app installation and app error events about the app. Your templates and settings aren't included, and your user name and computer name are replaced.

Improved

  • Help ▸ Go to website (was Go to GitHub) and Help ▸ About open the new website, software.kmarflow.com/TextTemplateManager-v2, with the manuals, help & troubleshooting, and a log collector for when the app doesn't start.

Full Changelog: v2.3.5...v2.4.0

Uninstall / reset

In Windows Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Installed apps ▸ TextTemplateManager ▸ …: Advanced options offers Reset (deletes the app's data) and Repair; Uninstall removes the app and its data. With PowerShell:

Get-AppxPackage *TextTemplateManager* | Remove-AppxPackage

The backups in Documents\TextTemplateManager\Backups stay; delete them by hand if you no longer need them.

Browser extension

Pair TextTemplateManager with the companion TTM-Connect extension to list and paste your templates from your browser:

Full documentation is available in the app under Help ▸ Open Manual, or download TextTemplateManager-Manual.pdf from the assets below; deployment, updates under company policies and removal are in TextTemplateManager-AdminManual.pdf.

v2.3.5

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 19:38

TextTemplateManager 2.3.5

Updates that download on their own, also where automatic Store updates are turned off.

Fixed

  • Check for updates didn't download an update it had already found when you clicked it within 30 minutes of the last check; it now downloads it right away.
  • The tray menu showed Restart to update without an update ready, and clicking it did nothing. It now appears only with an update ready.
  • A download that failed once said the Store couldn't download the update at all and pointed to Windows Update. It now shows the error with Try again, which downloads again straight away.

Improved

  • Settings ▸ General ▸ Updates has the update's next step itself: its button becomes Download, Try again or Restart to update, so you don't need to go back to the main window.
  • Automatic updates also download where automatic Store updates are turned off, with Check for and download updates automatically on (unless your organization doesn't allow it). Until now you had to click Download.

v2.3.4

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 09:32

TextTemplateManager 2.3.4

A hotkey-driven text-template paste tool for Windows: organize reusable snippets in folders, give them shortcuts, and paste them into any application from a global Quick Paste window.

Install

Get TextTemplateManager from the Microsoft Store. The Store installs and updates it; no administrator rights are needed. In a company it can also be deployed with winget or Intune (see the Administrator & Deployment Guide below).

Give each machine a different Quick Paste hotkey, or run only one instance, to avoid the clash.

What's new in this release

Update errors that say where they came from.

Improved

  • Update errors show their code and source (for example Microsoft Store, error 0x80244007) instead of a technical message; update.log keeps the full error message.

v2.3.3

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 05:21

TextTemplateManager 2.3.3

In-app updates that arrive reliably, also on PCs where automatic Store updates are turned off.

Fixed

  • Check for updates could say "Up to date" although a new version was out. The Microsoft Store answers an app only one update check every 30 minutes and ten a day, and otherwise repeats its last answer. TextTemplateManager now keeps to these limits, also across restarts, and when you check sooner, Settings ▸ General ▸ Updates says when the next check is possible. Checks by others (the Microsoft Store app, winget) count too: when the Store refuses a check for that reason, TextTemplateManager now says so instead of "Up to date".
  • On PCs with automatic Store updates turned off, a new version didn't show up as ready. Windows Update often downloads it there anyway, but TextTemplateManager didn't notice and tried winget instead, which can't update it, and then said the download had finished. It now finds a version Windows has downloaded and offers Restart to update; winget is no longer used.
  • While downloading, Settings showed "Downloading version Version ...". It now says "Downloading the update".

Improved

  • Check for updates downloads a new version right away. Where automatic Store updates are turned off, the Microsoft Store asks once first; if it can't download on your PC, TextTemplateManager says so and the update comes through Windows Update.
  • Clearer update texts in Settings ▸ General ▸ Updates, in the update notice in the main window and in the tray notice.

v2.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 06:03

TextTemplateManager 2.3.1

In-app updates find Store updates again.

Fixed

  • In-app updates found no update from the Store. Check for updates said "Up to date" although a newer version was out: the Store's answer was read the wrong way. TextTemplateManager now downloads it in the background and shows Update ready as intended; the notice then says "A new version", as the Store doesn't name it. This fix reaches you with this update, which still arrives the old way (the Microsoft Store, or quitting the app and starting it again); from then on updates come in the app.

v2.3.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 21 Oct 05:52

Give each machine a different Quick Paste hotkey, or run only one instance, to avoid the clash.

What's new in this release

One switch for automatic updates.

Improved

  • Automatic updates, one switch. Settings ▸ General ▸ Updates no longer has a separate Keep updating when automatic Store updates are off. Check for and download updates automatically covers it: where automatic Store updates are turned off on the PC and the organization allows it, TextTemplateManager still downloads its own updates (through winget), and a note under the switch says so. With the switch off, the update notice offers Download as before.
  • For administrators: on PCs where "Turn off Automatic Download and Install of updates" is set, TextTemplateManager now keeps updating itself by default, because the switch is on by default. To keep the Store policy final for this app, set AllowUpdateDespiteStorePolicy = 0 under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Marflow Software\TextTemplateManager; AutomaticUpdates = 0 leaves only Check for updates. See the Administrator & Deployment Guide.

v2.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 20 Oct 19:34

TextTemplateManager 2.2.0

Updates install with one click instead of waiting until Windows gets round to it, and the main window works better from the keyboard.

New

  • Updates inside the app. TextTemplateManager looks for a new version in the Store and downloads it in the background while you work. When it's ready, a notice above the template list (and the tray menu) offers Restart to update: your work is saved, the app closes, the new version is installed and the app is back within seconds, showing what's new. Not now? Quitting the app installs it too.
  • Update settings in Settings ▸ General ▸ Updates: the version, Check for updates, a switch to update only when you ask, and an optional switch to install updates while the app isn't in use.
  • For administrators: policy keys under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Marflow Software\TextTemplateManager turn in-app updates off or to notices only, lock the automatic updates and the idle install, and allow updating while automatic Store updates are turned off. See the Administrator & Deployment Guide.

Improved

  • Keyboard in the main window. The toolbar above the tree and the editor toolbar are one Tab stop each, with the arrow keys moving along their buttons. Tab goes from the editor toolbar into the text and on to the template's shortcuts; in the text it only indents in lists, tables and code blocks (Ctrl + Tab always moves on).

v2.1.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 19 Oct 08:53

TextTemplateManager 2.1.0

A hotkey-driven text-template paste tool for Windows: organize reusable snippets in folders, give them shortcuts, and paste them into any application from a global Quick Paste window.

Install

Get TextTemplateManager from the Microsoft Store. The Store installs and updates it; no administrator rights are needed. In a company it can also be deployed with winget or Intune (see the Administrator & Deployment Guide below).

Coming from TextTemplateManager 1: your templates and settings are backed up at the first start and imported in one step if you choose so; version 1's data folder is left as it was.

Give each machine a different Quick Paste hotkey, or run only one instance, to avoid the clash.

What's new in this release

Selecting several items from the keyboard, exports that keep their folders, and much better support for screen readers.

New

  • Select several items from the keyboard. In the tree, Shift + ↑ / ↓ extends the selection row by row and Ctrl + A selects all visible rows, as in File Explorer.
  • Exporting several items keeps their folders. The file lists them in tree order, each with its folders down from the deepest folder they share: the template f1t4 from folder F1 together with folder F2 gives F1 ▸ f1t4 and F2. Local items and items of a synced folder, or of two synced folders, can't be exported together; the export entries then say (not across areas).
  • Editor toolbar menus by keyboard. Enter opens a button's menu, Tab moves into it (the colors included), Esc closes it. In the table menu, the arrow keys choose the number of rows and columns and Enter inserts the table.

Improved

  • Screen readers. Moving into the editor no longer reads out a long string of random characters. The editor, its toolbar buttons, Quick Paste's tree and shortcut lists, and the controls of the main window and of Settings now have proper names.

Fixed

  • Tab right after moving to another item now goes to that item's fields. Before, especially on the first template opened, it could land in the previous item's fields and then on the File menu.

v2.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 15:57

TextTemplateManager 2.0.1

Fixes for synced folders, restoring backups, the editor and the guided tour.

Security

  • Pasting into the editor. Pasting specially crafted HTML, for example from a web page, could run script in the editor or freeze it. Both are fixed, and the editor's components are up to date.

Fixed

  • Sync files that are briefly locked. A change made elsewhere is no longer missed when the sync file was locked at that moment (for example while OneDrive uploads it); it is read once the file is free.
  • Sync files that can't be written. If your changes can't be saved to a sync file (read-only, or the shared folder refuses writes), a warning now shows on the synced folder and in Settings ▸ Sync. Your changes are kept and saved as soon as the file can be written; no temporary file is left behind.
  • Restoring a backup no longer asks whether to overwrite the file of a read-only synced folder; that file always stays as it is.
  • Guided tour. Screen readers read every step, also once the editor is shown; while Quick Paste shows its part, keys no longer reach the dimmed main window.
  • Screen readers now name the dividers that resize the panes.
