CStrip2 Visual v0.1.0 — First Public Release

CStrip2 Visual (v0.1.0) brings the musical character of Chris Johnson's (Airwindows) CStrip2 channel strip into a clear, modern visual workflow. Built in Rust with NIH-plug and egui, it combines four essential tone-shaping stages—high-pass/low-pass filtering, program-dependent compression, a 3-band equalizer, and an output stage with progressive harmonic saturation—together with a real-time stereo FFT spectrum analyzer, an interactive Tone Curve overlay, dedicated metering, preset management, and instant A/B comparison.

Key Features

  • Capacitor (Input High-Pass / Low-Pass Filters): Airwindows 6-stage interleaved non-linear IIR filter array (Hi-Pass and Lo-Pass) to clean up sub-bass rumble or soften high-frequency extremes.
  • ButterComp (Class AB Dynamic Compressor): Non-linear Airwindows compressor (Compres and Speed) featuring bipolar sample alternation, independent positive/negative envelope tracking, golden-ratio moving average, and dual-speed smoothing.
  • 3-Band Complementary Split EQ: Adjustable Bass (Bass Frq), Mid, and Treble (Treb Frq) bands with logarithmic density-to-dB mapping, sample-difference filtering, and cubic harmonic correction. Boosts add harmonic saturation (imparting density and moving frequencies forward into the foreground) while cuts reduce saturation (allowing frequencies to recede into mix depth, behaving much like a multiband saturator), controllable via knobs or draggable nodes on the display.
  • Output Stage (Saturation & Dither): Output level control with unity gain at approximately 0.333 (one third of the control range, with 0.33 as the control's default value). Driving Output above unity progressively engages Spiral and Density harmonic saturation stages, followed by Airwindows Floating Point Dither.
  • Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer & Tone Curve: Lock-free stereo FFT analyzer (OUT, IN, BOTH), theoretical Tone Curve overlay (Capacitor + EQ), selectable resolution (31, 63, 128, CONT), display mode (CRV, FILL, BAR), decay speed (SLOW, MED, FAST), peak HOLD, IN/OUT/GR meters, preset manager, and A/B slots.

Windows (x86_64)

  • Copy cstrip2.vst3 to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\
  • Copy cstrip2.clap to C:\Program Files\Common Files\CLAP\

macOS (Universal 2: Apple Silicon arm64 & Intel x86_64)

Copy CStrip2.vst3, CStrip2.clap, and/or CStrip2.component to:

  • Per-user installation (recommended): ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/{VST3,CLAP,Components}/
  • Global system installation: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/{VST3,CLAP,Components}/

macOS Security & Gatekeeper Authorization

This free open-source release is signed with a standard ad-hoc signature (codesign --sign -) and is not commercially notarized by Apple:

  1. Step 1 — System Settings (Recommended): Open your DAW. If macOS blocks the plugin, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Security and click "Allow Anyway" ("Open Anyway"), then confirm "Open" in your DAW.
  2. Step 2 — Targeted Quarantine Removal (Only if needed): If your DAW scans plugins silently in the background without showing the system prompt, remove specifically the com.apple.quarantine attribute from the affected plugin in Terminal:
    • Per-user:
      xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/CStrip2.vst3
      xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/CLAP/CStrip2.clap
      xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/CStrip2.component
    • Global:
      sudo xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/CStrip2.vst3
      sudo xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/CLAP/CStrip2.clap
      sudo xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/CStrip2.component

Verified Environments

  • Windows (x86_64): 85/85 unit & integration tests and VST3/CLAP release builds verified.
  • macOS DAW Production Validation: Verified on an Apple MacBook Pro M3 (Apple Silicon) running Ableton Live 12 (in collaboration with Javier Alarco).
  • macOS Automated CI Runner (arm64): 85/85 Rust tests, autonomous Apple Audio Unit validation (auval -v aufx Cs2A AMR2), and strict signature verification (codesign --verify --deep --strict --verbose=2).
  • Technical note: The public version is 0.1.0 (reflected in CStrip2.component). In CStrip2.vst3 and CStrip2.clap on macOS, CFBundleShortVersionString displays 1.0.0 due to the static template in nih_plug_xtask.

License & Complete Corresponding Source Notice (GPLv3)

CStrip2 Visual is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later (GPL-3.0-or-later).

Important Note on Source Archives:
Please download CStrip2_Visual_Source_v0.1.0.zip rather than GitHub's automatically generated "Source code (zip / tar.gz)" links if you require the self-contained GPLv3 Corresponding Source. Unlike GitHub's automatic snapshots, CStrip2_Visual_Source_v0.1.0.zip includes the complete archived vendor/ directory (276 external Rust dependencies from crates.io and Git, out of the 278 total packages in Cargo.lock alongside the 2 workspace crates cstrip2 and xtask) as well as the exact pinned source trees of clap-wrapper (v0.16.0), clap (1.2.3), and AudioUnitSDK (1.1.0) for offline compilation (--locked --offline).
