A note from "the author". This note you are reading is the only code I manually contributed to this repo. I've never looked at a single file, only diffs presented to me from Claude Code. So you need to ask yourself if you trust me and also if you trust Claude Code before you download, install, and run this thing. Mostly if you trust Claude Code, honestly. I am really just the the VP of Product for this thing: technically knowledgeable, but not necessarily about this language or this codebase in particular. (I've literally never hand-coded a lick of Swift in my life so far.)

But this toolbar app sure does scratch an itch that I personally have.

What's New in v0.5.1

Added

  • Add --overwrite [MODE] flag to install.sh for controlling existing app replacement
    • MODE can be: yes (auto-replace), no (cancel), ask (prompt, default)
    • Enables automatic upgrades without user interaction when set to yes
    • Included in --yolo mode for fully automated installations

Changed

  • Remove confirmation prompt when GitHub CLI is not installed during installation
    • Installer now shows GitHub CLI setup as "Next steps" after installation completes
    • Provides smoother installation experience without interruptions

Fixed

  • Fix install.sh prompts not working when script is piped via curl
    • Redirect read commands to /dev/tty to properly read user input when script is piped
    • Fixes "Installation cancelled" message appearing without prompting user

Installation

Quick Install (Recommended)

YOLO mode - full auto-install:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/happycollision/GitHubMenuBar/main/install.sh | bash -s -- --yolo

This will:

  • Download and extract the latest release
  • Remove quarantine attributes (unsigned app handling)
  • Move to /Applications automatically
  • Check for GitHub CLI and guide setup if needed

Conservative mode - you handle the final steps:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/happycollision/GitHubMenuBar/main/install.sh | bash

This downloads and extracts only. You'll manually move to /Applications and handle first launch.

Install specific version:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/happycollision/GitHubMenuBar/main/install.sh | bash -s -- --version v0.5.1 --yolo

Manual Installation

  1. Download GitHubMenuBar.zip below
  2. Extract the ZIP file
  3. Move GitHubMenuBar.app to your Applications folder
  4. First launch: Right-click the app and select "Open" (required for unsigned apps)
    • Note: If you have strict Gatekeeper settings, right-click may not work. Use:
    xattr -cr /Applications/GitHubMenuBar.app

Requirements

  • macOS 13.0 (Ventura) or later
  • GitHub CLI (gh) installed and authenticated 
    brew install gh
