v2.30.0
A faster, steadier glass panel
Most of this release is under the glass: opening the panel is quicker and the
backdrop keeps up with the window at your monitor's refresh rate instead of a
fixed 60 Hz. Nothing about how nex looks or behaves has changed.
What changed
- Opening over glass is quicker: the panel shows up as soon as its backdrop
is ready instead of waiting for the foreground and focus work first. On a warm
session that is tens of milliseconds less to the first complete frame. - No held picture on open: the old session's backdrop no longer flashes
before the current one lands — the reveal carries pixels captured for this
show. - The panel settles in instead of snapping: the open animation now runs from
the moment the panel is on screen, not while the page is still painting
behind it, and it no longer wobbles as the panel sizes itself to its content. - High-refresh displays are no longer throttled: the glass follows the
desktop at the panel monitor's own rate — 120, 144, 165 Hz panels used to be
paced at 60 with the rest rounded off by the Windows timer. 60 Hz setups
behave exactly as before. - Less work per frame: the glass is clipped to the panel plus its shadow,
so the compositor stops shading the empty margin around it, and per-frame
target churn is gone. - Icons are encoded once: the first open after boot no longer pays for
base64-encoding every result icon, and later opens are lookups.
Bug Fixes
- The helper finally has the app icon:
NexHelper.exewas shipping without
it, so the scheduled task and its process entry showed the generic default.
It now carries the same orange mark as the app.
Notes
- Black and white panel backgrounds still show DWM's thin system frame line
around the overlay (one DIP; 2 px at 200% scaling). That is deliberate for
this release and tracked in #37 with the measurement and the options. - Glass needs a Windows build with DWM system backdrops; on systems without it
nex falls back to acrylic or a solid panel, unchanged from 2.29.
