@hazevauks hazevauks released this 01 Oct 03:43

First public release of openPREY, a homebrew port of Prey (2006) for the Nintendo Switch, built on OpenPrey.

You need your own copy of Prey (2006) for PC. No game data is included.

Installation

  1. Extract openPREY-switch-0.1.0.zip to the root of the SD card. This creates switch/openprey/.
  2. Copy every .pk4 file from the base folder of your Prey installation into switch/openprey/base/.
  3. Hold R while starting any installed game (title override) and pick openPREY in the Homebrew Menu. It does not run from the Album.

The first visit to each map takes a few minutes while its texture cache is built; later loads are much faster. Full instructions, controls and tips are in the README.

Highlights

  • Prey's single-player campaign from your own PC files, with saving and loading.
  • A 30 fps frame lock and dynamic resolution, up to 1280×720.
  • Controls in the style of modern console shooters, optional gyro aiming, touch in menus and the system keyboard.
  • A settings menu on the − button: FPS counter, frame lock, shadows, dynamic resolution, GPU clock profile, gyro, look speed, subtitles and noclip.
  • Prey's own collision and monster navigation (AAS) data, loaded as shipped.
  • Logs, crash reports and death reports on the SD card, ready for bug reports.

Tested

Played on hardware from the start of the campaign, through the Land of the Ancients, up to the Leech Gun in the feeding tower, mostly in handheld mode with the CPU at 1224 MHz. With shadows off, the opening maps hold 30 fps, dipping to about 25 in the busiest moments. Later chapters have not been tested yet.

Known issues

  • No Deathwalk. When Tommy dies he does not go to the Deathwalk; the game continues from the last save.
  • Long first loads of each map while its texture cache is built.
  • Some busy areas drop below 30 fps. Performance is the focus of the next updates.
  • vid_restart leaves the screen black. Restart the game instead.
  • No multiplayer. Docked mode has had less testing than handheld.

Reporting bugs

Open an issue with switch/openprey/basepr/logs/openprey.log (plus openprey-previous.log and switch/openprey/openprey_crash.txt when they exist), and say where in the game it happened.
