RC4.5 — More Ways to Play

Switch 2 controllers meet Xbox One / Series emulation, Joy-Cons become more flexible, and DS4Windows gets a substantial round of everyday reliability and usability improvements.

This cumulative update includes the work since RC4.3, including RC4.4. DS4Windows is 5.0.5.0; the matching bundled VIIPER is 0.1.3-rc4.5. This is a prerelease for testers, not a stable-release.

There are lots of new features! Here are some updates:

Highlights

  • More controller choices: Switch 2 Pro over USB and Bluetooth, wireless Joy-Con 2 alone or joined, and Xbox One / Series virtual output through the existing profile mapper—not a Switch 2-only output option.
  • Joy-Cons that fit how you play: automatic standalone activation for remembered devices, labeled Link/Unlink controls, virtual-pad reuse during joining, upright/sideways presentation, optical mouse, motion aiming, and an accessible two-Joy-Con aiming option.
  • More expressive feedback: separate Xbox body and impulse-trigger channels, capability-aware feedback conversion, improved left/right and peak handling for DualSense-to-HD-rumble conversion, and sustained-rumble maintenance.
  • A clearer Switch 2 interface: task-based illustrated controls, matching controller artwork and highlights, readable tooltips, live readings, C-button mapping, corrected gyro handling, and persistent local controller IDs.
  • Everyday reliability: fixes for stale controller rows, output-slot collisions, retry cleanup, legitimate Joy-Con counter resets, profile-effect restoration after Trigger Lab preview, and several reported startup, profile, and setup bugs.

Choose your download

  • All-in-one installer: DS4Windows_5.0.5.0_Setup_x64.exe includes the matching backend and prerequisite payloads.
  • Portable package: DS4Windows_VIIPER_x64.zip includes viiper.exe beside DS4Windows. Extract into a new folder. The portable app starts its matching broker when needed, or reuses a verified compatible instance from that same folder.

A different or incompatible running broker produces a close-and-relaunch message; DS4Windows does not kill it. A broker borrowed from an existing compatible session is not stopped when DS4Windows exits. USB/IP driver prerequisites still apply to portable use.

Portable updates: close both apps, extract the new ZIP into a new folder, and migrate your profiles/settings. The unsafe older in-place ZIP updater is blocked for portable sessions. Managed-install update behavior is preserved.

Managed installs: the full installer is the recommended update path. The existing standalone DS4Updater v2.0.4 can falsely report replacement failure because it compares an RC tag such as 4.5 with the Windows file version 5.0.5.0; these are intentionally different version schemes. Its normal auto-launch path can still reopen the updated app. This pre-existing updater limitation is not represented as fixed here.

Please read before testing

  • These first-party RC executables are unsigned; Windows may show an unknown-publisher warning.
  • Switch 2 Pro USB headphone output has physical test evidence. Bluetooth headphone/microphone audio is unsupported, and headset microphone capture is unverified.
  • HD-rumble conversion is not lossless DualSense waveform reproduction or mechanical adaptive-trigger resistance. It is still in testing.
  • The backend remains VIIPER plus USB/IP. This release does not claim a finished native driver, YET
  • The specific Hades II native-haptics regression matrix and newest combined-package/controller transitions have been fixed.

See the full improvements and validation assessment and publication record. Matching source archives, notices, provenance, and SHA-256 records accompany the downloads. The matching VIIPER release uses the same Windows x64 broker bytes bundled here.

For useful bug reports, include your physical controller, connection type, virtual output, profile, game, and what happened immediately before the problem. Power-off/reconnect, single/joined Joy-Cons, output switching, and held rumble followed by Stop are especially valuable checks.

The final source CI passed its full test and installer lifecycle gates. The exact-tag release build produced the downloads; all 13 assets, source identities, app versions, portable contents and broker pins were verified before publication. The Windows installer SHA-256 is B795658DEA5616CAD450FF4CD91453B85865D5DE25B749D84E3F6BACE53AB411; the portable ZIP SHA-256 is 603932256C1898FD18173A3A8E1DDB30E76CF8BB1F05E87E1A6F5B9AEF2BC8D8.
