Note

This isn't a typical "analysis" I would do... I was just making notes for a collar I was asked to check out, and I figured there was no reason to keep the notes private.

Fi Series 3+ dog collar

https://tryfi.com/ - Analyzing as a product for personal use.

  • Start date: 2025/08/27
  • End date: XXXX

General Notes

  1. Fi has been around since 2019
  2. Uses Decagon.ai

Note

Many of these Pros/Cons are "personal", as in things I do/don't like in things I own, not necessarily "good/bad" things.

Pros

  • Precise, reliable GPS tracking network with unlimited nationwide range.
  • Unlimited safe zones for peace of mind at home and on the go.
  • Immediate notifications if your dog strays from a designated safe zone.
  • LED lights customizeable for low visibility situations
  • 3 months battery + wireless charging
  • stainless steel frame
  • IP68/66k tested for fresh and salt water up to 50m deep
  • 500# resistance
  • Does not directly process payments (PayPal, Stripe)
  • paracord style?? <3
  • Help Center with KBs does not require login

Cons

  • App
  • Track walks and receive activity recommendations based on breed and age.
  • AI companion
    • Health insights, vaccine reminders, answers to any question — your go-to resource for all things dog.
    • Detects activity, rest, barking, licking, scratching, eating and drinking.
    • Upload your documents and have them organized, summarized, and stored in one place.
  • Get connected with activity challenges, stat sharing and meetups.
  • Job descriptions for tech roles never mention "secure/security" or "safe"... comes close with "best practice" but that is not sufficient in my book.
  • Gamifying stats - that could lead to overworked dogs

Pro + Con

  • Always on tech
  • Add co-owners
  • Share your dog's live location link with your network. (Good for when I'm away and if he escapes, but overall not my favorite sort of thing)
  • Track sleep patterns over time to enhance your understanding of your dog’s well-being.
  • Auto-renewal on by default?

Questions

Some of these I plan to ask directly, some I'm still working thru via KB articles, and I still do not have hands on the product

  1. What technology is under the hood for calling home?
  2. In order to use the Application, you must have access to a wireless network, (App Store section) - collar or just the app?
  3. Security audit report for collar and app?
  4. Do you have a program for reporting security issues?
  5. Can you disable walk tracking?
  6. Can you disable AI companion?
  7. How/Where is data stored and processed?
  8. How is data secured?
  9. How long is data retained? Is it retained if accounts are closed? (See Privacy Policy#10)
  10. Who has access to the data?
  11. How does the share dog live location link work?
  12. How does Community work / is secured?
  13. Why do none of your tech job descriptions call out security?
  14. From Privacy Policy: "We do not re-identify personal information that is de-identified." - this says "DO not" ... .not "CAN not" - is this to say the process is actually reversible?
  15. Auto-renewal on by default?
  16. TOS#5 responsible for activity by unauthorized users - what about unauthorized users which were able to access the account due to Fi specific data breach?

TOS corrections

  1. please note Fi is not offered and may not work everywhere... - never has a close parens
  2. Returns. Please see our . see what now
  1. 👍 We collect and use geo-location information solely to provide you with our tracking services for the Fi Devices. We also never sell personal information to third parties for monetary gain.
  2. 👎 To the extent Fi uses any data derived from our Services for the development or training of artificial intelligence algorithms or machine learning models, a. 👍 (if it can be trusted) such data will not contain any personal data.
  3. 👎 (to be clear, this is a fair thing to do for a product LIKE THIS [not every product], but it doesn't mean I like it lol) The Fi Devices are “smart” which means that, if you expressly opt-in, they will collect location information both passively (e.g., using Wi-Fi access points such as your phone or the Fi charging base, to save energy and maximize battery life) or actively (e.g., using GPS or local Bluetooth beacons).
  4. 👎 (I don't like that they pull metadata on literally everything, which is more than the GPS info) User-generated content data, such as profile pictures, photos, images, ratings, comments, questions, messages, works of authorship, and other content or information that you generate, transmit, or otherwise make available on the Service, as well as associated metadata. Metadata includes information on how, when, where and by whom a piece of content was collected and how that content has been formatted or edited. Metadata also includes information that users can add or can have added to their content, such as keywords, geographical or location information, and other similar data.
  5. 👎 Third-party sources. We may combine personal information we receive from you with personal information we obtain from other sources, such as: Public Sources, Third-party services, Third-Party AI Providers
  6. 👍 Please note, our contracts with such Third-Party AI Providers prohibit them from using your personal data other than to help us provide our Services.
  7. 👍👍 (finally, something i love to see - 2FA/MFA/SFA, other than I'd rather see them not use SMS but it is better than nothing) enable security features of the Service, such as by sending you security codes via email or SMS, and remembering devices from which you have previously logged in;
  8. 👍 You may opt-out of our marketing communications as described in the Opt-out of marketing section below.
  9. 👎 Our third-party advertising partners may use cookies and similar technologies to collect information about your interaction (including the data described in the automatic data collection section above) with our Sites, our emails, and other online properties and use that information to serve online ads that they think will interest you. This can also be referred to as targeted advertising. We may also share information about our users with these companies to facilitate personalized content delivery to those or similar users on other online platforms.
  10. 🤷 Retention. We generally retain personal information to fulfill the purposes for which we collected it, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements, to establish or defend legal claims, or for fraud prevention purposes. 15. 👍 (Excellent chart breaking down data collection and who it is disclosed and "sold" to, which is pretty standard, which isn't to say great lol)
  16. 👍 Contact Us. If you have questions or concerns about our privacy policies or information practices, please contact us as set forth above.
  1. 🐛 "you can do so at any time through here" - Link is broken for managing your preferences.
  2. 👎 Please note that both Fi and third-party service providers may set cookies on via our Properties – these ‘third party cookies’ are set by domains other than those we control and may recognise your device across different websites.
  3. 👎 👍 (Eww it exists, good it can be opt'ed out) - These technologies employ software code to record users' interactions with the Properties in a manner that allows us to watch DVR-like replays of those user sessions. The replays include users' clicks, mobile app touches, mouse movements, scrolls and keystrokes/key touches during those sessions. For example, we use Hotjar for this purpose - you can learn more about Hotjar at https://www.hotjar.com/legal/policies/privacy/ and you can opt-out of tracking by Hotjar at https://www.hotjar.com/policies/do-not-track/.
