The Behave Fire Modeling System version 7 (Behave7 or B7) is a collection of models that describe wildland fire and the fire environment. Behave7 is flexible, producing tables, graphs, and diagrams of fire behavior (surface and crown fire rate of spread and flame length; fire growth; maximum spotting distance; probability of containment); and fire effects (scorch height and probability of mortality). It can be used for a variety of wildland fire management applications. The Behave7 software has been completely redesigned, with a new interface and streamlined code. It is compatible with the Windows, macOS and Linux Operating Systems. It is the successor to BehavePlus Fire Modeling System versions 1-6 (2001-2025) for Windows and the original BEHAVE fire behavior prediction and fuel modeling system (1984-2001) for DOS.
If you have issues while using Behave7, please read the information in the box to the right of the window, especially the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) or contact the IIA Help Desk, which is open 24-hours/day, 7 days/week.
The Behave Fire Modeling System version 7 (Behave7) has been approved for use by all federal land management agencies and should be available from your Software Center or wherever you obtain software.
- It can take time to get the most current version of Behave7 added to a Software Center, so your agency may not have the most recent version.
- If you work for another agency and have issues installing it on your computer, we can talk with the appropriate oversight group and try to get it approved for use. Please let us know who to contact, if possible.

There are two introductory courses on the Wildland Fire Learning Portal. Originally created as pre-work for Rx300 and S-490, anyone can self-register to take them at any time.
-
Behave v7 Surface and Crown Fire
- This course is the first course you take and is a prerequisite for the Prescribed Fire course.
- It is useful for anyone wanting to learn how to navigate through Behave and learn about the Surface and Surface and Crown modules.
- A basic understanding of fire behavior is required.
-
Behave v7 Prescribed Fire
