Tibyan 0.5.0 — beta

The first wide beta since 0.4.0. Free, no ads, no tracking.

What's new

• Mushaf: four new riwayat (Warsh, Qalun, al-Duri, Shu'bah) from the King Fahd Complex's pages, eight heritage styles beside Zakhrafa, tajweed colouring (off by default, 18 rules in colours you choose), two facing pages on wide screens, and a large verse-by-verse view for older readers.
• Bookmarks (fawasil): one 3D look for every bookmark, each with a name and colour.
• Recitation: new reciters (including al-Sudais, al-Afasy, al-Ghamdi, al-Dosari and Ibrahim al-Akhdar) and riwaya recitations, verse and word highlighting, speed ×0.75 to ×2, shorter pauses between verses, and timings anyone can correct in the browser.
• Memorization and tasmee: a hifz screen, word-by-word tests, spaced review (FSRS), a hifz map, and recitation checking on your device; your voice is never sent to a server.
• Verse services: word study and word meanings, similar verses (mutashabihat), copy and share as text or image, and selecting verses across pages.
• Khatma: planner and reminder, reading and listening reports, and a reflection journal.
• Tasbih: a counter in several styles, with a daily log and a widget.
• Widgets: khatma portion and shortcuts on Android, iOS and macOS, plus Android Auto.
• Your data: one-file backup (now with your settings) and a storage and downloads screen.
• Interface: three styles (Geometric, Night, Manuscript), new first-run steps, an elderly mode, screen-reader support, and search by meaning.

Added

• Reciter: Ibrahim al-Akhdar (إبراهيم الأخضر, Hafs, murattal) from mp3quran, with his photo and verse and word highlighting timed by Tibyan (forced alignment on his mp3quran surah files); his surah files are on our mirror.
• The home screen draws its cards, sections and buttons larger on tablets and desktop windows, with each section as a full card.

Added (closed testing only — remove before a public release)

• Test packs on our server under /mirror/test/, listed in one place (lib/core/testing/test_packs.dart, one switch): the unreviewed drafts of al-Wahidi's asbab, al-Biqa'i, al-Damghani and the five tafsir books, the Nuqayah tafsir audio indexes (al-Muyassar, al-Sa'di, with per-verse offsets from the reader's times files), the QuranEnc English audio index and the English al-Mukhtasar pack. Every title says «(مسودة للاختبار)» / «(test draft)»; text copied exactly as imported. tools/export_pack.py --test-drafts and tools/stamp_test_packs.py stamp them; docs/MISSING_DATA.md (section 0) lists what to remove and which flags to turn off.

Added (content ready, all hidden until reviewed and permitted)

• Book sections from reviewed packs, all through one section widget: the tafsir books (al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir, al-Baghawi, al-Saadi) as extra choices on the tafsir screen, «المناسبات» (al-Biqa'i), and al-Damghani's wujuh in word study. Text verbatim with its citation; the storage screen names each pack's kind.
• «استمع للتفسير» (tafsir audio), the English translation heard after each verse during recitation, and the English tafsir (al-Mukhtasar) for the English interface, each behind a flag that is off, streamed from a small link index or an optional hash-checked pack, with its source line.

Added (asbab al-nuzul, off)

• An «أسباب النزول» section in the verse services and the tafsir screen: the book's text as it is, with the verses it quotes coloured, and the source cited in the publisher's own wording. It shows only from an installed reviewed pack; none is published yet, and the feature is off.
• Reviewed book packs are downloaded, hash-checked and deleted from the storage screen. tools/import_dar_alathar.py imports Dar al-Athar's file as review drafts.

Added (qiraat audio, off)

• A verse-level index of the AQQD qiraat clips in data/qiraat_audio/ (tools/qiraat_audio.py builds it from the OSF listing and checks contributions in CI), a guide for contributors who mark where the differing word falls in a clip (docs/QIRAAT_AUDIO.md, with a second reviewer), and an app data layer that streams the verse clip, or only the reviewed word range, from sources with a clear licence only. Behind the qiraat_audio flag, off.

Added (riwaya word boxes)

• Riwaya editions (Warsh, Qalun, al-Duri, Shu'bah): word boxes derived from each riwaya's KFGQPC page geometry, text and font (tools/build_riwaya_word_boxes.py), carried in the v2 page packs. With a v2 pack, the divine names are coloured on riwaya pages, recitation and test modes cover verses word by word, and word study opens for a word that is exactly a Hafs word (same verse, word count and letters); other words say why there is none. The packs on the mirror are still v1.

Fixed

• The riwaya sources lost from tools/sources.json in the riwayat merge are restored.

Added (tajweed review)

• The tajweed rules the app colours with can now be reviewed by a qualified reader: tools/import_tajweed_review.py puts Juz' 'Amma and a fixed sample of 300 other verses (864 verses, 5,715 rules) in a review file, and the review tool shows each verse coloured by its rules with the list under it.

Added (recitation timing)

• timing_files.py fix-known: two rules that fix 30 of the 76 known source timing errors without listening (not yet applied: they go in with a rebuilt content.db).
• A timing-measure workflow, run by hand, measures missing verse and word timings by forced alignment on the files the app plays, riwaya recitations by their own count, and produces files for review; it never publishes.

Added (review drafts, not shown in the app)

• The five tafsirs (al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir, al-Baghawi, al-Saadi) and al-Biqa'i's Nazm al-Durar imported as review drafts from OpenITI's altafsir.com copies: one entry per verse group, each linked to its verses (tools/import_altafsir.py). The files are rebuilt locally and stay out of the repository until review starts.
• al-Damghani's «إصلاح الوجوه والنظائر» imported as 2,744 drafts (481 words, 2,236 senses), rebuilt with tools/import_damghani_wujuh.py.
• The review tool shows the entry kinds of al-wujuh wa-l-nazair (باب، كلمة، وجه) and lists the kinds present in each file.

Added (CarPlay, waiting for Apple)

• CarPlay (iOS) is ready: choose a reciter and surah, or continue from where you stopped reading, with Now Playing. It switches on once Apple grants the CarPlay Audio entitlement (tools/apple/carplay.rb enable; the request steps are in docs/CARPLAY.md). Android Auto and CarPlay share one browsing tree (CarBrowser); CarPlay reaches it over the app.tibyan/car channel.

Added (staging content that waits for permission)

• Tools that download pending sources into a git-ignored staging folder with their hashes, without shipping anything: english_mokhtasar and the english_rwwad audio index (QuranEnc), the Nuqayah tafsir audio index, the Quranpedia dumps and topics check, and the AQQD coverage measure. Reports in docs/verification/2026-10-05_*.
• docs/outreach/APPROVALS.md: how each reply is recorded, and what it switches on or what replaces it if refused.

Added (widgets: iOS, macOS and an actions widget)

• The khatma widget as a WidgetKit extension on iOS 17 and macOS 14 (desktop widgets), generated into the Xcode projects by tools/apple/add_widget_targets.rb from apple/. The macOS app is new (macos/): it carries a channel that writes the widgets' keys into the App Group and receives tibyan:// links, since home_widget has no macOS support.

Added (tafsir and translation)

• Tafsir and translation screen, opened from verse services: al-Tafsir al-Muyassar (KFGQPC, via QuranEnc), Saheeh International 1.1.2 with its footnotes (via QuranEnc), and Pickthall (public domain, via Tanzil). Every text is shown verbatim with its source's credit and version.
• Swipe or use the arrows to move through the surah's verses; texts sit side by side on wide screens for comparison.
• Tafsir settings: Uthman Taha Naskh or the interface font, text size, and which texts are shown.
• Trial, off by default: justify Arabic tafsir with kashida (tatweel) instead of wider spaces. Display only; Quran words in brackets are never stretched, and a copy button gives the original text.

Added (Zakhrafa style)

• New default style «Zakhrafa»: an illuminated turquoise, coral and navy frame, built from vector ornaments provided by Ahmed.
• Page view: immersive reading with controls on touch; cartouches for juz, hizb and surah (each opens the index at the current place) and a centred page number (go to page); catchword under the frame; surah headers and hizb quarter marks in the frame's design; cover page; al-Fatiha and the opening of al-Baqarah in a fully ornate page; light and golden splash screens.
• Verse services on long press, multi-verse selection with handles, four one-tap marks (reading, review, memorizing, reflection); tapping a verse marker sets the reading mark.
• Recitation mode, auto-scroll with ten speeds, verse marker shape and colour settings, a hizb tab in the index.
• Page packs fall back to the Tibyan mirror when the source fails.

Fixed

• Both editions fill the frame's height; lines are split where no mark is clipped.

Changed

• Old edition (1405H) pages now fill the screen: the text takes the full width, and the 15 lines spread evenly over the full height, without stretching the calligraphy. Pages 1 and 2 are centred whole, so their ornament stays intact.

• First launch now starts with the interface language (Arabic, English or the device language), titled in both languages; then style and colours, then the edition.

Phase 1: the mushaf.

Added

• First launch: choose the style and colours with a live preview of a real mushaf page, then the Madina edition (new 1441H or old 1405H). Defaults: Calm, Light, new edition.
• Page view of the new Madina edition (1441H): the KFGQPC page artwork, unchanged, downloaded once (65 MB, resumable, checked by SHA-256 page by page) and then offline. Pages turn right to left in every language; tap a verse to highlight it.
• Page view of the old Madina edition (1405H): page images downloaded directly from quran.com (63 MB, checked by SHA-256), not re-hosted. Verses highlight through quran.com's glyph boxes.
• Continuous view: the KFGQPC Hafs text (version 2.0, digitally signed), verbatim, in the KFGQPC Hafs font, justified, with the basmala above each surah and adjustable size.
• Index: surahs, juz and pages; search by surah name, page number, or a reference such as 2:255.
• Fawasil: named bookmarks that move to where you last read with them, plus automatic last-position saving.
• About this mushaf: every source with its license and attribution, and the Tanzil notice.
• Settings: edition, keep the screen on while reading, Quran text size.
• Word boxes for all 77,430 words of the new edition, derived from the page geometry (tools/build_word_boxes.py); not used in the app yet, pending human review.
• Bundled content database (assets/db/content.db), built reproducibly by tools/build_content_db.py: KFGQPC text (shown), Tanzil Uthmani text (kept verbatim for comparison), Tanzil search text, surah, juz, hizb, sajda and page metadata for both editions, verse outlines, word boxes, and the reviewer's decisions.

Text review

• Six places where Tanzil and the KFGQPC text differ (two juz boundaries, four spellings) went to a qualified reviewer. All six are decided and recorded in docs/review/DECISIONS.md; the KFGQPC text matches all six.
• Permission to include the KFGQPC Hafs text has been requested from KFGQPC (letter 13). If refused, the continuous view returns to the Tanzil text.

How to test

1. Fresh install: pick a style and mode (the page preview follows), then an edition.
2. Download the pages (Wi-Fi recommended). Pause and resume once.
3. Page view: swipe through pages, tap a verse, save it to a new fasil, reopen the app: it opens where you stopped.
4. Index: search 2:255, then open surah 114 and page 604.
5. Continuous view: open Al-Isra 7 and Ya-Sin 22; change the text size in Settings.
6. Settings: switch to the old edition, download its pages, open 5:77 (page 121 there, 120 in the new edition).
7. About this mushaf: every source is listed with its license.

v0.1.1

Fixed

• Selected radio buttons and switches were invisible in several styles (for example, white on white in Calm light). Controls now use a dedicated colour that is at least 7:1 against the page in all 12 style/mode combinations, and a test guards it.

Added

• Changa as a third interface font option.

How to test

1. Settings: the selected language option is clearly marked in every style and mode.
2. Turn the crash-report switch on and off: both states are clear.
3. Settings > Appearance > Interface font: choose Changa.

How to test

1. Install the APK from this release, or run flutter run.
2. Settings > Appearance: try all 4 styles in Light, Night and Black; check that text is easy to read everywhere.
3. Switch the interface font between IBM Plex Sans Arabic and KFGQPC AN.
4. Switch the language to English and back to Arabic; the layout should flip direction.
5. Close and reopen the app: every choice should be kept.

Mushaf pages: Madina 1441H, Hafs (data pack v1)

Downloadable page pack used by the app (not an app release).

• 604 page SVGs, unchanged, each compressed with xz (65.4 MB). The app downloads this once and decompresses a page when it is shown.
