1.2.24
Spotify2 v1.2.24 – Discover more music with fewer API requests
The changes functionally tested on ARM in v1.2.23.1 are now available as the stable v1.2.24 release.
- Explore keeps the existing categories and adds “More music genres…” with 115 additional categories.
- Categories and category paging are generated locally and require no Spotify Search requests.
- Playlists are searched only when a music genre is opened: initially up to ten results, with at most one new Spotify Search request per invocation.
- “More…” resumes saved search cursors and reuses previously cached results.
- HTTP 429 handling respects Spotify’s Retry-After cooldown. If tracks are not cached, starting playback shows the remaining wait; cached tracks remain playable.
- Menu labels, category names and the new countdown support all eight language variants: German, English, Spanish (ES/AR/MX), French, Dutch and Hebrew.
- Native Spotty payloads remain unchanged.
Packages: ARM, WINDOWS and X86-MACOS, with SHA-256 checksums listed below.
The new functionality was tested by the user with the ARM test version. Windows and X86-MACOS include the same Python changes and pass package and regression checks; no new hardware test is claimed for these platforms in this release.
Installation: Install the matching ZIP in Kodi via “Add-ons → Install from zip file”, then restart Kodi.

1.2.22
Spotify2 v1.2.22
v1.2.22 adds a selectable Spotify2 diagnostic log level for cleaner Kodi logs without removing troubleshooting capability.
- Level 0 (Normal) suppresses routine playback, prefetch, performance and diagnostic INFO messages while keeping warnings and errors visible.
- Level 1 (Diagnostics) retains relevant playback/state/transition diagnostics for normal troubleshooting.
- Level 2 (Verbose diagnostics) retains the complete diagnostic and performance logging used for detailed playback, prefetch and GUI analysis.
- The previous
verbose_debug_logging=truesetting is migrated to Level 2 when it was explicitly enabled. - The selected log level is live-reloaded; a Kodi restart is not required.
- Existing playback, playlist, album transition, cache/prefetch and foreground GUI behavior remains unchanged.
Validated for the existing Kodi 21/22-compatible Spotify2 runtime and platform package set.

1.2.21
Spotify2 v1.2.21
Update v1.2.21: Promotes the tested v1.2.20.x development line into the next Spotify2 release candidate. This release combines the Spotify Web API compatibility work introduced with v1.2.20 with improved artist-library handling, album context playback, automatic continuation between albums, cache/prefetch optimizations, and hardened Kodi foreground GUI synchronization.
Highlights
Spotify Web API and artist browsing
Artist browsing continues to respect Spotify's endpoint-specific Web API restrictions instead of treating them as one global API limit.
GET /v1/artists/{id}/albumsremains limited to a maximum of 10 items per request, with Spotify2 automatically combining paginated responses to preserve the configured Kodi browse page size.- The combined artist release view supports albums, singles, appearances and compilations (
album,single,appears_on,compilation). - Market selection continues to follow the authenticated Spotify account without hard-coded country-specific behavior.
- Spotify2 retains its shared API gate, conservative request pacing, cache reuse,
Retry-Afterhandling, and separate handling of ordinary rate limiting andQUOTA_EXCEEDED. My Music > Artistsnow uses improved followed-artist caching, immediate cache invalidation after follow/unfollow operations, and a saved-library-derived fallback when Spotify returns an empty result or the API is temporarily unavailable.
Album playback and automatic next album
Album context-menu Play now reuses the mature playlist playback workflow instead of maintaining a separate album-specific playback path.
This provides the established playlist behavior for albums as well, including:
- complete album queue creation
- Kodi music full-screen handling
- active-track highlighting and foreground focus synchronization
- existing queue, sequence and transition infrastructure
After the final track of an album, Spotify2 can automatically continue with the next album in the current artist listing.
Chained transitions such as:
Album A → Album B → Album C
reuse the existing playlist sequence, successor preparation, audio prefetch and foreground hand-off mechanisms.
GUI synchronization and transition performance
v1.2.21 hardens Kodi's retained-container behavior during automatic album transitions. This prevents an earlier album from being reopened and keeps the visible album list and active-track focus synchronized across chained transitions.
Successor albums are prepared cache-first, with prepared queue data and prefetched audio reused at the album boundary. Album metadata stored in transition caches is compact and cycle-free, while Spotify Web API initialization remains lazy on genuine cache misses.
The mature v1.2.19.1 playlist browse, playback, focus and foreground hand-off core remains unchanged. No skin-specific XML, forced GUI control hacks, autonomous background Container.Update() calls, or fixed-delay focus timing are required.
Diagnostics and compatibility
Platform diagnostics continue to identify the active authentication and playback binaries for Windows, ARM Linux/LibreELEC, Android ARM, Linux X86 and macOS.
Spotify2 continues to separate:
- Legacy Spotty v1.x / librespot 0.4.2 for Device Connect, authentication and token operations where required.
- Modern Spotty v2.x / librespot 0.8.x for dedicated playback on supported Windows and ARM targets.
Windows 10 32-bit package
v1.2.21 additionally provides a dedicated package for Windows 10 32-bit (x86):
plugin.audio.spotify2-v1.2.21-WINDOWS-32BIT.zip
This package is intended only for a 32-bit Kodi installation. It contains two native PE32/i386 binaries:
- Spotty v1.3.1 / librespot 0.4.2 for Device Connect, authentication and token operations.
- Spotty v2.1.2 / librespot 0.8.0 for playback and audio prefetch.
The modern playback binary was built from michaelherger/librespot commit 3b817a9, matching the Spotty v2.1.2 source generation used by the existing Windows x64 playback package.
The 32-bit package contains no x64 executable and no x64 msvcr110.dll. Apart from the architecture-specific Windows binaries and removal of the unused x64 runtime DLL, its add-on files are byte-identical to the regular v1.2.21 Windows package.
Linux X86 and macOS Intel/Apple Silicon continue to use the legacy Spotty runtime and remain not user-tested. Android X86/X86_64 contains legacy authentication/token payloads only and also remains not user-tested.
Validation
The final v1.2.21 candidate was runtime-tested on Windows 11 x64 with Kodi 22.0 Beta 2.
The final chained album test successfully completed Album A → Album B → Album C with successor preparation, queue-cache reuse, audio prefetch, foreground hand-off and verified GUI focus after both transitions.
No Spotify2 Python traceback, foreground transition timeout, GUI identity/focus timeout, HTTP 429 rate-limit event or QUOTA_EXCEEDED event was observed during the final validation.
The Windows 10 32-bit package passed the following static validation:
- both Windows executables were verified as native PE32 / Intel 80386 files
- no PE32+ / x86-64 executable or DLL is included
- all non-Windows-runtime add-on files are byte-identical to the regular v1.2.21 Windows package
- all Python files compile successfully
addon.xmlparses successfully- the final installation ZIP has the correct
plugin.audio.spotify2/root structure
The Windows 10 32-bit package has not yet been runtime-tested on a real Windows 10 32-bit system and should therefore be considered an additional test build.
ARM and X86/macOS packages also passed Python compilation and addon.xml validation.

Notes
- Spotify Premium is required.
- Spotify2 remains targeted at Kodi 21 and Kodi 22.
- Windows packages are architecture-specific: use
WINDOWS.zipfor 64-bit Kodi andWINDOWS-32BIT.ziponly for 32-bit Kodi on Windows 10. - The Windows 10 32-bit package is currently build-validated but not runtime-tested on real 32-bit Windows hardware.
- Direct ZIP installation does not provide automatic updates.
- Restart Kodi once after installing or updating Spotify2 before starting the add-on.
- Spotify2 is an independent, unofficial Kodi add-on and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Spotify or the Kodi project.
This v1.2.21 release supersedes the v1.2.20 public pre-release for continued validation.
1.2.20 - Superseded
Update v1.2.20: Updated Spotify Web API compatibility for artist browsing. Artist album requests now include albums, singles, and compilations, while respecting Spotify's endpoint-specific API limits. The /v1/artists/{id}/albums endpoint is limited to a maximum of 10 items per request, with Spotify2 automatically combining paginated responses to preserve the configured Kodi page size. Market handling remains based on the authenticated Spotify account without hard-coded country-specific behavior. Other Spotify API endpoints retain their respective limits, and the existing v1.2.19 playback, playlist transition, pagination, and GUI behavior remains unchanged.
1.2.19.1
Update v1.2.19.1: Fixed Spotify artist album browsing after a Spotify Web API limit change. Requests to /v1/artists/{id}/albums are now limited to a maximum of 10 items per API call, while Spotify2 automatically combines multiple requests to preserve the configured Kodi page size. Other Spotify API endpoints and existing v1.2.19 behavior remain unchanged.
1.2.19
Spotify2 v1.2.19
Validated on Windows 11 / Kodi 21.3 and LibreELEC 12.2.1 / Raspberry Pi 5 aarch64 / Kodi 21.3. The release retains context-menu playlist entry with fullscreen/focus, canonical pagination, repeated automatic successor-playlist playback and foreground GUI hand-off, native Back/Stop behavior, cache-first ARM performance, prefetch statistics and the HEAD/stat fast path.
Changes
Kodi 21/22 compatible; no skin-specific XML, background Container.Update, Action(ParentDir) or service-side directory navigation. Windows contains separate legacy spotty.exe authentication/token and modern spotty-playback.exe playback binaries. See RELEASES.md for checksums and platform details.

Spotify Web API Client ID
A Spotify Premium account is required to use Spotify2.
Spotify2 includes a default Spotify Web API Client ID. Optionally, you can configure your own Client ID in the add-on settings. Using your own Client ID can reduce HTTP 429 responses caused by shared Web API rate limits, but it cannot prevent all rate limiting.
Create an application in the Spotify Developer Dashboard. If the dashboard requests a Redirect URI, you can use:
http://127.0.0.1:8888/callback
Spotify2 uses Device Connect for authentication and does not open or depend on this callback URI.
Installation note
After installing or updating Spotify2, restarting Kodi once is recommended.
1.2.18.1 – Superseded
Spotify2 v1.2.18.1
Spotify2 v1.2.18.1 is a maintenance release with improved Client ID handling and platform-specific compatibility fixes.
Changes
- Adds a dedicated action for changing the Spotify Web API Client ID in the add-on settings.
- Validates and permanently saves only a complete 32-character Client ID.
- Applies a newly saved Client ID automatically within a few seconds; restarting Kodi is not required for this setting change.
- Clears the previous Web API token after a Client ID change while preserving the existing Device Connect credentials.
- Reduces unnecessary Android error logging when the expected executable fallback is used.
- Improves Windows SimpleCache recovery by closing the SQLite connection before recreating the cache.
- Replaces deprecated music metadata calls with Kodi 21/22
InfoTagMusicsetters. - Keeps authentication credentials, playback and resume behavior, provider metadata, and the bundled Spotty binaries unchanged.
