Quitting VoiceDumps while it was still transcribing could freeze it, and a dictation cut off before it was saved was lost for good. Both are fixed.

In short

  • Quitting never hangs. Quit in the middle of a transcription and the app closes in a few seconds, measured at 3.0 s from the click. Before, it froze until it was force-quit.
  • Cut-off dictations come back. If VoiceDumps is quit, force-quit or crashes before a dictation is saved, it is transcribed and saved the next time the app opens, as a note dated when you spoke it.
  • Nothing to set up. Both happen on their own.

What happened

A two-minute dictation was still being transcribed, slowly, on a Mac that was running hot and short on memory, when the app was quit. macOS's hang report shows the app stuck inside its quit handler, waiting for the transcription to let go of the speech model. Loading a model under memory pressure can take most of a minute, so the quit waited, the app stopped responding, and it had to be force-quit. The dictation had not been saved yet, so it was lost.

Neither problem was new in 1.2.5. The transcription and dictation code did not change between 1.2.4 and 1.2.5.

What changed

  • Quitting now hides the window straight away, stops any transcription in progress, and waits at most a couple of seconds for the speech model to be released. It never waits longer than that.
  • A dictation interrupted before it became a note keeps its audio. The next time the app opens, it is transcribed and saved. It is saved and not pasted, because the place you were typing into is gone.
  • Taps of the key shorter than a second are not turned into notes.
  • A recording cut off by a crash partway through is repaired before it is transcribed, so the audio that was captured is not lost.

Requires an Apple Silicon Mac. Everything runs locally; nothing is uploaded.
