What's New in Miteiru 7.6.0

Changes since v7.5.2.

A lighter download

  • The installers are about half the size: the Windows installer went from 368 MB to about 180 MB. Releases used to pack sources, build leftovers and an extra copy of the language assets.
  • The dictionaries are stored compressed. The first time each language loads after updating, Miteiru rebuilds its dictionary database once (a few seconds). The rebuilt Japanese dictionary is a quarter of its old size on disk.

A calmer look

  • The blue and yellow look with the frog stays, with lighter borders, softer shadows and sentence-case labels.
  • Fonts: Noto Sans JP, SC and TC are bundled, and subtitles use them by default instead of Arial. The one for the language you're learning comes first, so each character is drawn the way that language writes it. The interface uses Nunito.
  • Font picker: choose a recommended font, any installed font, or type a name. It's in video settings → Look for subtitles, and in Home → Settings & tools → Appearance for Miteiru itself.
  • Flashcards has its own page, with a way back Home and an explanation when there are no cards yet. Overdue cards come first, and a card's reading and notes stay hidden until Show answer.

Watching

  • The play button, seek bar and controls fade out during playback, like YouTube, and come back when you move the mouse. Space plays and pauses.
  • The play button follows the real play state, including pauses from media keys and headsets.
  • A new seek bar, and the video page no longer redraws itself 33 times a second, so playback is lighter on the CPU.
  • Opening files:
    • the empty video page has an Open video or subtitles… button and a ← Home button;
    • files can be dropped anywhere on the window;
    • a video and its subtitles can be dropped together even when their names differ.
  • Fewer subtitle prompts:
    • the next episode's subtitles go into the same slots;
    • a reloaded subtitle goes back where it was;
    • files named *.en.* go to the secondary slot on their own.
  • Video settings (X) are split into Playback, Subtitles, Look and Data tabs, with plain labels. Subtitles move aside when a side panel is open, instead of running underneath it.
  • Word lookups show the meaning first. For several dictionary entries the panel says "Entry 1 of 4".

Language

  • Japanese lookups put the obvious word first: する is "to do", いる is "to be", この is "this".
  • Japanese verb chains are one word, looked up by the main verb:
    • 食べさせられなかった, 行っちゃった and 忘れてしまいました each group as one word;
    • they look up 食べる, 行く and 忘れる;
    • learning states follow the main verb.
  • Learning analysis is about 15 times faster, and its short glosses match the reading: 本 read ほん is "book".
  • Subtitles in Shift_JIS, EUC-JP, GB18030, Big5, EUC-KR and Windows-1252 load correctly. SRT and VTT timings with dots or cue settings are read correctly.
  • On the Learn page, an AI translation can include just the registers and notes you pick, so a quick translation comes back faster.

Fixes

  • Going back Home (Ctrl+H) keeps the language you chose; it used to switch the dropdown to Japanese.
  • Video shortcuts no longer fire while you type in a search box or notes.
  • R returns to the start of the line correctly when the subtitle is shifted.
  • Furigana follows the dictionary reading (大きい → おおきい).
  • The dictionary panel says when a word has no entry.
  • Vietnamese lookups ignore attached punctuation.
  • Chinese "contains" search works, and 2,264 CantoDict characters (我, 四, 家, …) are no longer replaced by other entries.
  • Anki opens after an export.
  • Remove dictionary caches now deletes them; it used to only show a command.
  • Unticking the all-caps fix in the subtitle prompt now works.
  • The window title shows your subtitle's file name.
  • Links from the embedded YouTube player open in your browser. HTML inside subtitle files is limited to formatting tags.

Removed

  • The MeCab tokenizer. Kuromoji uses the same dictionary and needs no setup. If MeCab was your last language, Miteiru opens Kuromoji instead.
