Google Cast does not play audio originating from home assistant i.e. TTS

The problem

I get some errors in the logs when I attempt to use TTS to my chromecasts or play audio that is stored in home assistant like mp3's stored in the local media file.

I know my internal URL and external URL are the same and routable. I tested this by playing the TTS to my phone directly from the URL provided in the logs from coming from the internet.

I can cast other audio to the google devices like the streaming radio from home assistant to the casts and that works fine.

So I am a little confused on when we say the URL is not reachable. I can reach it from within my network and publicly, this was the first thing I checked. Am I missing something? I can even play the media from my phone coming from the internet using the URL from the log.

I'd advise using something like traefik or a proxy within your home network to proxy domains to the correct 443 and 80 ports, this should eliminate network problems reaching the above URL as it will first hit the proxy and behave like any external device aka your phone/laptop etc

I've run into the same issue recently to do with the internal url. Its easier to have a proxy route traffic from 443 to 8123 for a number of reasons, some of which is how internal_url works within HA being a bit of a pain when it comes to chromecasts and trying to set it to an internal ip address vs domain. Not HA's fault, just the way chromecasting works.

also consider how your internal DNS is set could be causing issues, as chromecasts could be using 8.8.8.8 instead of your internal DNS. which can fail if you try to reach your own ip address from the internal network. I use cloudflare so I don't have this problem.

quick test is to change internal_url to the ip address and see if that resolves the issue.

Ok so I think I fixed it. I did it by forcing all DNS traffic on the network to go to my internal DNS server via some firewall rules so now the chromecasts think they are going to 8.8.8.8 but are really going against my DNS server. Thanks for some of the troubleshooting steps.
