When renaming a device, dialogue box for auto renaming entities is not displayed

Describe the issue you are experiencing

Similarly to #19924, renaming a device does not show the entity renaming confirmation dialog and the entities are not renamed. Advanced mode is enabled and I tried toggling it off and on.

I experience the issue over multiple instances of HA, also one which I ran in safe mode. I think this started happening recently, perhaps after the update that changed the way in which devices and integration entries show or when the 'rename entity IDs' option was added in the menu.

I show two examples, one where the rename feature completely fails to rename the entities and other one where an already renamed device has some inconsistency in entity naming that can only be corrected manually.

Describe the behavior you expected

I'd like to be able to rename a device and have it's entities renamed as well.

Steps to reproduce the issue

Example one

1. Open the rename dialog using the pencil button

2. Put new name in and click OK

3. Go into device

The entities are not renamed and no dialog to do so was shown

Friendly name remains with the old name on all entities

The rename entity IDs option does not even offer to rename any of the entities

When I rename it back to the original name, the device name is removed from the prefix of the friendly name

However, if I go ahead and manually change the friendly name of the entity like below:

I am now given an option to rename the entity IDs as well

Example two

1. A previously renamed entity has some but not all of its entities renamed. In this case, the 'Living Room' camera was renamed to 'Living Room Tapo Camera'. The prompt did appear at the time; however, not all entities got renamed.

This dialog was removed on device rename, it is replaced by Recreate entity ids option in device overflow menu.

Also this dialog never had anything to do with entity names, it was for changing entity_ids.

It sounds like you're mixing up a bit some concern about entity names with this dialog, but there was never a connection there.

That dialog doesn't seem to function the same way though. Previously I used to be able to synchronize entity IDs to the device name using the dialog, but Recreate entity ids seems to always reset the entity ID to its default value from the integration that provides it instead of updating it to match the renamed device.

The suggested entity ids from this flow come from core and are suggested by the integration that provides the entity.

So I think if you don't like what's being suggested there, you should open a core issue and tag with the integration in question.

Back in the day, renaming a device would rename all of it's entities and entity_ids.
Currently, the issue is that renaming a device doesn't necessarily rename it's entities. I've tested it on two integrations - Tapo Camera and even the official HA app device entry for my Galaxy Watch.
I'm revisiting this issue because I just added a new camera to Home Assistant named Office. To avoid name conflicts with other entities, renamed it to Office Tapo Camera and that only took effect on the device, entities are now showing the old camera name e.g. Office Privacy. Entity IDs are untouched - clicking the rename entity IDs button does nothing (as in, no entity IDs are to be renamed).

Before renaming, the entities would only show their friendly name. After renaming the device, entities now show old device name as prefix to their friendly name.

How can I bulk rename the entities, so they don't start with Office any more and so that their entity IDs are properly renamed to be prefixed with office_tapo_camera_... like all my other cameras are. The only way to get this to work is to go through each entity one by one, rename it and then regenerate the IDs.

This behavior has been fiddly to say the least, I've had many issues in the past with some device entities being renamed properly whilst others needed manual tweaking. Some entities show renamed name automatically, others have it show in the entity options dialog under Name as if I manually put it there whilst some not - yet their names and entity IDs are correct.
