Added
- In-app updates through Sparkle. fanfan checks for new versions in the background and offers to install them and relaunch; Settings › About gains an Automatically Check for Updates switch, and Check now downloads and installs the update instead of opening the releases page. Updates are verified with an EdDSA signature.
Removed

Added
- Settings › Monitoring › Thermal Protection Limit: how far thermal protection may push the fans past your max speed, as a share of the hardware maximum (50–100 %).
Changed
- Thermal protection now stops at 80 % of the hardware maximum by default, even at 95 °C, instead of running the fans at full speed. Set the limit to 100 % for the previous behaviour.

Added
- Each auto-mode strategy (Power Saving, Balanced, Performance) can now be retuned in Settings › Strategy Presets: target temperature, max speed and response, with a reset to the shipped values.
Changed
- The strategy tiers moved up one step: Performance now uses the former Balanced values (60 °C, 65 % max speed), Balanced the former Power Saving values (75 °C, 35 %), and a new, quieter Power Saving runs at 80 °C with a 20 % ceiling. Existing settings keep their current values; the former Performance tier shows as Custom.

Fixed
- Updating the app no longer asks to install the helper again. The helper used to exit as soon as the old app was deleted, so launchd tried to relaunch it before the new copy existed and then stopped retrying. It now waits for the new binary before restarting.
- If an approved helper still stops responding, fanfan re-registers it once on its own instead of showing the install prompt. This also covers the update from 1.5.3, whose helper still has the old behaviour.

Fixed
- Avoid an extra application activation when opening the temperature panel from a high-temperature notification, which could make the panel flash and disappear. Panel presentation now waits until the notification callback and menu tracking finish.
- Preserve pending notification clicks during the initial focus handoff, while keeping normal dismissal and preventing a cancelled panel from reopening on later activation.
Installation
Option 1: DMG (Recommended)
- Download and open
fanfan-1.5.3-macOS.dmg - Drag fanfan.app to /Applications/

release. Only release title and notes can be modified.
Fixed
- Remove the empty Settings scene that could leave an invisible, zero-size window keeping the app in the Dock. The Settings menu, keyboard shortcut and popover button now open the same usable settings window.
- Ignore zero-size visible windows when returning to menu-bar mode, while preserving Dock access to minimized settings windows. Settings no longer opens automatically on a windowless launch or reactivation; previously open settings can still be restored.

Immutable
release. Only release title and notes can be modified.
Fixed
- Clicking a high-temperature notification now opens the temperature panel and returns the app to menu-bar mode when no settings window is open, so dismissing an empty Dock icon no longer requires quitting fanfan. Repeated clicks keep the panel open, and clicks that launch the app wait for the panel to be ready.
- Segmented controls stay inside the controls card.
Added
- Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French and Spanish localizations.

Changed
- The popover now sits on the system's Liquid Glass material instead of an opaque background, with translucent cards, glass header buttons and hierarchical text that stays legible on glass and follows Increase Contrast. On macOS 27 the Overview / Sensors switch uses the native tabs picker.
- Settings is a native grouped form. Custom PID gains only show their sliders once the override is switched on.
- Fine-grained sliders (rpm, target temperature, alert threshold, PID gains) no longer draw a dense row of tick marks; they still snap to the same steps.
- The quit button uses the power symbol, and the icon-only buttons have tooltips and VoiceOver labels.
- With Reduce Motion on, the popover fan and the menu bar icon stop spinning.
Changed
- The fan-control helper is now registered through
SMAppServiceand talks to the app over XPC instead of a Unix socket. Setting it up no longer asks for an administrator password: click Install Helper and allow fanfan once in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions. The helper runs from inside the app bundle, so app updates update it too, and deleting the app removes it. - Only the fanfan app signed by its developer can send commands to the helper. Previously any process of an admin user could connect to the socket.
- Fans return to firmware control the moment the app quits or crashes, instead of after the 10-second lease. The lease still covers an app that hangs.
Upgrading
- After updating, open the popover, click Install Helper and allow fanfan in Login Items & Extensions. The new helper removes the old one (
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.hoobnn.fanfan.smcd.plist,/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/fanfan-smcd) by itself. Until then, fans stay under macOS control.
Fixed
- The install script downloads the correct release archive again.
