Successful water research

We are defining successful research as

• diverse
• sustainable
• growing

Diverse research refers to the variety of topics that are well researched and the diversity of research partners and collaborations. This quality is based on the ecological principle that diverse systems are more resilient to environmental pressures and system shocks. We are looking for research that reflects a complete understanding of every aspect of components of the water budget and is conducted using both quantitative and qualitative methods and at a variety of temporal and spatial scales. This type of research is most likely in interdisciplinary teams that can combine methods, theories, and past experiences to optimize future efforts.

Sustainable research considers both financial and ecological futures. Research should be sponsored by multiple funding sources and allow for independent, unbiased research to proceed in the face of political and economic changes. Research that is financially sustainable can address sustainable issues, i.e. the increasing pressure on water resources under an increasingly unpredictable climate and growing population.

A growing body of research signals a bright future if growth continues.

These definitions will allow us to identify both bright spots of past research and opportunities for new research.
