NO SUS 1.1.8
- Links open faster, and never stay blank in Android browsers.
- Steadier: fewer ways to crash, and a camera photo is kept if your phone closes NO SUS.
- Crash reports send only the error type and code line, never your content. Turn them off in Settings.
- Ready for the newest Android phones, and a little smaller.
- Your chat on a laptop stays open with your phone locked, also on phones that pause apps when locked (like OnePlus).
- New look: paper by day, lamp light at night, with Nox keeping watch.
- Share a burn note or file with a 6-digit code instead of a link.
- Faster: NO SUS now runs on servers in India.
- Fresh start: sign in again. Old links, groups and accounts don't carry over.
The attached app-release.apk is the direct-install build of NO SUS 1.1.8 for Android, the file the website's and the app's download buttons serve.
Installed NO SUS from Google Play? Update from Google Play instead. The Play build and this APK are signed with different keys, so Android will not install one over the other.
About the version number. NO SUS restarts its numbering at 1.1 with this release, the fresh start on the new servers. The 1.7 and 1.8 builds came before it. If you installed 1.8.0 or 1.8.1 from this page, install this APK over it by hand; those builds won't offer it as an update.
New in 1.1.8
- Links open on every phone. A link opened in an Android browser that doesn't hand it to the app used to stay blank. It now opens on the web after a moment, with "Open here instead".
- Lighter to open. A link's page loads about 1.3 MB less (5.1 MB to 3.8 MB): fonts it never draws wait until they're needed. Big files open without freezing the page.
- Better previews. A link shows Nox and "A note for you. It opens once." in WhatsApp and other chats.
- Screen readers. A link's page now reads out its text and buttons.
- Steadier. A wrong address shows the page instead of an error, a screen that breaks says so with Reload or Back, downloads that stall stop instead of spinning, and one link opens one screen.
- Android. A camera photo is kept if the phone closes NO SUS while the camera is open, sharing many big files leaves out what's over 150 MB in all, and the APK carries only the parts phones use.
- Crash reports. When something breaks, NO SUS sends our own server the error's type and the line of our code, never your content, your account or a link. Settings → Privacy & security → Crash reports turns them off.
New in 1.1.7
- Ready for the newest Android phones. An animation library NO SUS never used is removed. It was the one part of the app not built for the memory layout newer Android phones use, and Google Play requires that. Nothing you see changes.
New in 1.1.6
- Your chat on a laptop survives a locked phone, on more phones. Some phones (OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme) pause apps when they lock, even an app that shows it is connected, and the laptop then closed the chat after two minutes. On those phones NO SUS now asks you to allow it in battery settings first, with one button to the right page, and only says you can lock your phone once it is allowed.
- It says why. If the phone did pause NO SUS, the phone says so when you come back, with the same button, and the laptop says what to do.
- Steadier after a settings change. Coming back to NO SUS during a session keeps it running in the background, also after you changed its battery setting.
New in 1.1.5
- Your username is your address. Every account picks a username once, and it is also your page:
name.nosus.foo. Skip it and you get a private random one. One account, one address; a name you give up is held for 30 days before anyone else can take it. - Your chat on any screen in 3 steps. Open your address on a laptop, scan the code, approve. Your whole chat is the default, and the laptop can be remembered so the number match is skipped next time.
- Files both ways. Big files show progress, arrive one at a time, can be retried, and never wait forever. The session keeps going with your phone locked, after Back, and through a short network drop.
- Profile photos. HEIC photos (the iPhone format, and many Android phones) work, a big photo no longer strains a small phone, and a photo that can't be read says so.
- Reply to a one-open note. After a note burns, the reader can send one back or make their own. Senders on the website see when a link is opened.
- Feel. Light taps and short sounds, with Sounds and Vibration switches in Settings.
- Fewer words. Screens lose lines that repeated the title or the next button.
New in 1.1.4
- Links you sent. Send shows each one-open link you sent and whether it was opened, and when. Signed in, you get a notification when it happens (turn it off in Settings → Notifications → Link opened). Nobody learns who opened it.
- Active screens in Settings lists the screens and sign-ins on your account. End one, or all of them. NO SUS also notifies you when your account is paused or a screen connects to it.
- Downloads survive a network blip. If a one-open file stops halfway, tap Retry within five minutes to finish it.
- No endless spinners. A request that gets no answer stops after a short wait and offers Retry, with plain words instead of error codes.
- Fewer taps. Send skips steps that have only one answer, and a tracked link no longer asks twice.
- iPhone and web. Signing in on the web no longer gets stuck on an "Open app" screen on an iPhone, and it brings you back to the screen you were connecting.
- Bigger text. NO SUS follows your phone's text size up to twice as big.
- Notes to yourself that couldn't be saved yet are kept on the phone and tried again the next time you open NO SUS, even if the app was closed.
- Fairer limits on shared Wi-Fi. Limits count each phone first, so a classroom on one Wi-Fi isn't treated as one person.
- Fewer false account pauses. Password managers, chat bubbles and similar settings count once, signing in again clears a pause they caused, and the paused screen has Contact us.
New in 1.1.3
- Open on any screen works both ways. Add from your phone or from the other screen, and both see it straight away. A session can last 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours, and it keeps running when you lock your phone. Add an hour from the app or the notification.
- Links keep the time you picked. A one-open link no longer stops working after 20 minutes, and Copy link is all the other person needs.
- Uploads keep going if you leave the screen or lock your phone. "Your link is ready" brings the link back.
- Sign out on all devices in Settings. Signing out now also disconnects Google Drive on that device, so the next person can't see your chat.
- Your chat: pick several files at once, or take a photo straight into it.
Fixed in 1.1.2
- Deleting a group now also deletes its files from storage, as the dialog promises.
- Offline start shows your saved name, not part of your email.
- Hindi text has its own bundled font, and the web app no longer contacts Google until you connect Drive.
- Account pause screen names sign-ins from several new devices among its reasons.
Fixed in 1.1.1
- Share link. Creating a tracked link for a group file no longer leaves the dialog blank; the link and its QR show right away.
Fixes since the 1.8 previews
- Notifications. "Turn on notifications" after creating a group now asks Android, and "Not now" is remembered.
- Offline start. Opening the app offline on a new install no longer shows first-run setup or overwrites your name and photo.
- Navigation. Sign out and Delete account close the account screen. Back from a guest tool returns to the welcome screen.
- Connection check. It no longer reports a server error when everything is fine.
- Groups. A group can no longer be joined just by knowing its name, and invite codes are visible only to members.
- Web app. Every button can be reached with Tab and pressed by a screen reader. The first frame matches your Day or Night choice.
What's new in 1.1
- Day and Night. Day is ruled notebook paper with a blue ballpoint accent. Night is a warm lamp-lit desk with amber accents. No pure black or pure white anywhere. Nox, the cat, is drawn in code and reacts as you go. The Canary screens keep their classic look.
- 6-digit codes. "Use a code instead" turns a burn note, a file or several files into a 6-digit code that works once, for 10 minutes, with no link. While the code is live the server holds the key; the link and QR stay the default because they don't need that.
- Speed. The backend moved from Sydney to Mumbai, so every request is 5–10× quicker from India. Groups load in 3 calls instead of 12, delete is instant, and your You chat opens from an encrypted on-device cache.
- Prompts like a grown-up app. Camera and notification permission are explained first. The review prompt only appears after something worked. "End this session?" guards the laptop session, and deleting a burn note takes a second tap.
- Fresh start. The new servers start empty: sign in again, and create new groups and links. Links made with 1.7.x stop working.
