dumbtv home 1.1

@humblemuzzu humblemuzzu released this 19 Oct 16:44

A home screen for Fire TV: your apps, your HDMI inputs, a clock. Nothing else.

What's new in 1.1

  • Rows scroll properly. The focused tile stays in the middle of the screen while the row slides under it, and the page scrolls a whole row at a time, so nothing is left cut in half (#9).
  • Wallpaper by time of day. Name files morning-…, afternoon-… or night-… in the wallpapers folder and set rotate=daytime (#10).
  • Fire OS 6 support. 2017–2018 Fire TV Sticks get the home screen too, through a small keeper service, because Fire OS 6.7 refuses the accessibility hook (#4).
  • Installs on Fire OS 7/8 no longer fail when Android reports the HOME service by its class name, and verify.sh checks that the service is really running, not just switched on (#12).

Facts

  • 45 KB, plain Java, no libraries
  • No internet permission, no advertising ID
  • Fire OS 7/8: no permissions at all. Fire OS 6: usage access, boot and task order, which the keeper needs there. Each is capped at maxSdkVersion 27, so newer Fire OS never sees them. Check: aapt2 dump permissions dumbtv-home.apk
  • Signed with the same key as 1.0, so it installs over it and keeps your settings

Install or update

git clone https://github.com/humblemuzzu/dumbtv.git && cd dumbtv # or: git pull
adb connect <tv-ip>:5555
./launcher/install.sh

install.sh downloads dumbtv-home.apk from this release, checks its SHA-256 against launcher/version.env, installs it and sets up the HOME takeover. Undo with ./launcher/install.sh --undo.

Tested on a Fire TV Edition television, Fire OS 7.7 (Android 9). The Fire OS 6 keeper was tested by its author on a Fire TV Stick 4K.

A home screen for Fire TV: your apps, your HDMI inputs, a clock. Nothing else.

  • 41 KB, plain Java, no libraries
  • No permissions at all: no internet, no advertising ID. Check: aapt2 dump permissions dumbtv-home.apk
  • HOME lands on it in ~0.2 s, without Amazon's home flashing first
  • Move, rename and hide tiles; accent color, tile size, clock, wallpaper; one plain-text settings file

Install

git clone https://github.com/humblemuzzu/dumbtv.git && cd dumbtv
adb connect <tv-ip>:5555
./launcher/install.sh

install.sh downloads dumbtv-home.apk from this release, checks its SHA-256 against the value pinned in the script, installs it and sets up the HOME takeover. No Java or Android SDK needed. Undo with ./launcher/install.sh --undo.

Installing the APK by hand (adb install dumbtv-home.apk) works too, but HOME only switches over after install.sh has set up the accessibility service and the alarm setting; see launcher/README.md.

Tested on a Fire TV Edition television, Fire OS 7.7 (Android 9).
