Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.1.0 (tag commit 1b3b752d39a4fe4c0f28f10905e4608789d3e050), per the 2026-09-02 ruling (standards spec §5.5/§9, PR hyperpolymath/standards#725). The whole file is the rsr-template-repo canonical, so besides the uses: line it also: limits the trigger to branch pushes (tag/deletion payloads mislabel Branch:), drops actions: read (unused), and adds timeout-minutes: 5. Dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' is unchanged. Line 1 SPDX header kept as it was.

Engine: .git-private-farm/scripts/smtp-notify-sweep.sh. Verification for this repo: regime=no-lock changed=.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml, sig=G 1d21c07 base=main
(pristine/post = gh actions-lock --no-fix validity before/after; repair = the lock was already invalid before this change and is valid after it.)

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Re-enabled email notifications for branch pushes.
    • Limited notifications to branch push events.
    • Added a five-minute job timeout.
    • Updated the email notification service for improved reliability and reproducibility.

Walkthrough

The push email notification workflow now runs for branch pushes only, has a five-minute job timeout, and uses a SHA-256-pinned SMTP notification action. Its commentary describes the workflow re-landing and the replacement action.

Changes

Push email notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow notification controls
.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml
The workflow filters the push trigger to branch pushes, adds a five-minute job timeout, and replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with the pinned hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action. The commentary describes the re-landing and action properties.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1d21c

The workflow now sends notifications for pushes to every branch, but push bursts can launch overlapping email jobs and branch deletions can still trigger notifications. These bounded availability and notification-noise risks should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Poem

A rabbit checks the branch-bound mail,
Five minutes keeps the job on trail.
A pinned SMTP path now sings,
While SHA-256 guards its wings.
The workflow hops back into play.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Add a concurrency or rate-limiting policy.

This workflow now runs for pushes to every branch, but it has no concurrency group. A burst of pushes can start many SMTP jobs in parallel. The five-minute timeout limits each job; it does not limit overlapping jobs. Add an explicit policy to serialise, coalesce, or cancel notifications before re-enabling all-branch delivery. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude branch deletion events explicitly.

branches: ['**'] excludes tag refs, but it does not exclude branch-deletion push events. GitHub includes branch deletions in the push event, and branch filters match the affected ref. The job can therefore still send an email for a deleted branch. Add github.event.deleted != true to the job condition. (docs.github.com)

+    if: ${{ vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' && github.event.deleted != true }}

hyperpolymath dismissed coderabbitai[bot]’s stale review September 2, 2026 17:17

Advisory review dismissed by the estate CI/CD sweep. (1) SHA-vs-tag: in lockfile repos the actions.lock is the pin authority and a tag reference is required; the NOSONAR comment on the uses: line records that. (2) SMTP_PORT is a repository secret, not part of this diff. (3) The branch-deletion guard is a fair point but belongs in the canonical template; filed as hyperpolymath/rsr-template-repo#58. CodeRabbit is ADVISORY tier per the ratified CI/CD spec and is not a merge gate.
