Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.1.0 (tag commit 1b3b752d39a4fe4c0f28f10905e4608789d3e050), per the 2026-09-02 ruling (standards spec §5.5/§9, PR hyperpolymath/standards#725). The whole file is the rsr-template-repo canonical, so besides the uses: line it also: limits the trigger to branch pushes (tag/deletion payloads mislabel Branch:), drops actions: read (unused), and adds timeout-minutes: 5. Dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' is unchanged. Line 1 SPDX header kept as it was.

Engine: .git-private-farm/scripts/smtp-notify-sweep.sh. Verification for this repo: regime=no-lock changed=.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml, sig=G f85fd5d base=main
(pristine/post = gh actions-lock --no-fix validity before/after; repair = the lock was already invalid before this change and is valid after it.)

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Push email notifications now handle branch pushes more explicitly.
    • Added a five-minute execution limit to help prevent stalled notification processes.
    • Notification delivery continues to respect the existing enablement setting and SMTP configuration.

Walkthrough

The workflow now handles branch pushes explicitly, excludes tag and deletion events, documents the SMTP action, applies a five-minute timeout, and uses the pinned hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action action.

Changes

Push email notification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Push trigger and SMTP notification job
.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml
The workflow matches all branch pushes while excluding tags and deletions. It documents the re-landed SMTP action, adds a five-minute timeout, and replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with the pinned hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action. The PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED condition and SMTP settings remain in use.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f85fd

The workflow may send incorrect notifications when branches are deleted, and email delivery can fail if the configured SMTP service requires STARTTLS rather than implicit TLS. Exclude deleted-branch events and confirm an SMTPS-compatible configuration before merging.

Poem

A rabbit checks the branch at dawn
Tags and deletions now move on
SMTP carries the note
A five-minute clock keeps watch
Pinned actions hop along

🌐 Web query:

site:docs.github.com GitHub Actions push event deleted branch branches filter workflow github.event.deleted

💡 Result:

In GitHub Actions, the push event is triggered when a branch is deleted, in addition to when commits or tags are pushed [1]. Because the push event encompasses deletions, a workflow configured with on: push will run when a branch is deleted [1]. However, there is no native github.event.deleted filter within the push event configuration to specifically target branch deletions in the workflow YAML syntax [2][3]. The branches and branches-ignore filters control which branches trigger the workflow based on the branch name, not the deletion action itself [3][4]. To distinguish a branch deletion from a standard push in your workflow, you must inspect the webhook payload within a job step [1][5]. When a branch is deleted via a push-related action, the GitHub Actions payload includes a deleted boolean property [1]. You can use this in a conditional step: jobs: check-deletion: runs-on: ubuntu-latest steps: - name: Check if branch was deleted if: ${{ github.event.deleted == true }} run: echo "The branch was deleted." If you specifically wish to trigger a workflow only when a branch or tag is deleted—and not on code pushes—you should use the delete event instead of the push event [2][6]. The delete event is designed specifically for this purpose and will run when a Git reference is deleted [6]. Note that the delete event requires the workflow file to exist on the default branch to trigger [6]. Summary of Key Points: - The push event triggers on branch deletion [1]. - There is no direct on: push: deleted: true filter [3]. - Use the delete event if you want a dedicated trigger for deletions [6]. - Use conditional logic (if: github.event.deleted == true) if you must use the push event [1].

Exclude deleted branch pushes before sending mail.

The push event also fires when a branch is deleted, and branches: ['**'] does not filter by deletion status. The job condition can therefore invoke the SMTP action for a deletion. Add github.event.deleted != true to the job condition.

Use an SMTPS-compatible SMTP configuration.

If SMTP_PORT is 587, or SMTP_HOST requires STARTTLS, notifications can fail because the pinned action uses implicit TLS for secure: true and does not support STARTTLS. Set SMTP_PORT to 465 and use an SMTPS endpoint, or select an action that supports the configured transport.

configuration used by the notification action referenced in the workflow to use
an SMTPS endpoint with SMTP_PORT set to 465, or replace the action with one that
supports STARTTLS when retaining the current host and port.

hyperpolymath dismissed coderabbitai[bot]’s stale review September 2, 2026 17:17

Advisory review dismissed by the estate CI/CD sweep. (1) SHA-vs-tag: in lockfile repos the actions.lock is the pin authority and a tag reference is required; the NOSONAR comment on the uses: line records that. (2) SMTP_PORT is a repository secret, not part of this diff. (3) The branch-deletion guard is a fair point but belongs in the canonical template; filed as hyperpolymath/rsr-template-repo#58. CodeRabbit is ADVISORY tier per the ratified CI/CD spec and is not a merge gate.
