Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.2.0 (tag commit ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7), per the 2026-09-02 ruling (standards spec §5.5/§9, PR hyperpolymath/standards#725). The whole file is replaced with the rsr-template-repo canonical, which — besides the uses: line — restricts the trigger to branch pushes (tag and deletion payloads mislabel Branch:/head_commit), sets timeout-minutes: 5, carries a deliberately per-run concurrency group, and grants only contents: read. How many of those are actual changes here depends on how far this repo's copy had drifted — read the diff, not this list. Dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' is unchanged. Line 1 SPDX header kept as it was.

Engine: .git-private-farm/scripts/smtp-notify-sweep.sh. Verification for this repo: regime=no-lock changed=.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml, sig=G 31ee876 canon=543fc1474b54 base=main
(pristine/post = gh actions-lock --no-fix validity before/after; repair = the lock was already invalid before this change and is valid after it.)

Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.2.0 (ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7) per the 2026-09-02 ruling; file is the rsr-template-repo canonical (dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED unchanged). regime=no-lock changed=.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml,

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Enhancements

    • Email notifications now run for pushes to all branches.
    • Concurrent notification runs are allowed to complete independently.
    • Notification jobs now have a five-minute execution limit.
    • The notification mechanism has been updated for improved reproducibility and integrity through pinned, verifiable components.
  • Documentation

    • Updated workflow documentation to reflect the current notification implementation.

Walkthrough

The GitHub Actions workflow now targets branch pushes, uses non-cancelling per-run concurrency, limits jobs to five minutes, and sends notifications with the pinned hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action version v0.2.0.

Changes

Push email notification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow trigger and run controls
.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml
The workflow targets all branch pushes and assigns each run a non-cancelling concurrency group.
SMTP notification execution
.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml
The workflow documents the notification implementation, adds a five-minute timeout, removes actions: read, and uses hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action at v0.2.0.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 31ee8

Branch deletions may produce incomplete push-email notifications because the workflow can run without commit details. Add an explicit deletion-event exclusion before merging.

Poem

A rabbit reads each line,
The patch grows clear beneath the moon,
Small changes hop in place,
Tests guard the garden path,
Reviews bloom before the dawn.

In @.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml:
- Line 15: Update the job condition in the push notification workflow to require
github.event.deleted to be false, alongside the existing head_commit check, so
deleted branch events do not produce incomplete notifications.
- Line 42: Update the SMTP notification workflow using
hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action so SMTP_PORT is confirmed as 465 with secure:
true and the configured server supports implicit TLS; if the service uses port
587, switch to an action or endpoint configuration that supports STARTTLS.

🌐 Web query:

GitHub Actions push event branch deletion github.event.deleted head_commit null branches filter

💡 Result:

In GitHub Actions, when a branch is deleted, the push event is still triggered [1][2][3]. In this specific scenario, the head_commit field in the webhook payload is null, and the after SHA becomes the default branch's SHA [4][1][2]. To filter or handle these events, use the following approaches: 1. Detecting branch deletion: You can identify that a branch was deleted by checking if the deleted property in the push event payload is true [1][2]. Within a workflow, this is accessed via ${{ github.event.deleted }}. 2. Handling deletions in workflows: If you need to perform actions specifically when a branch is deleted, the recommended approach is to use the delete event rather than the push event [1][5]. The delete event provides the ref of the deleted item and ref_type (e.g., branch or tag) [1][6]. 3. Filtering/Ignoring deletions: - To ignore branch deletions in a push workflow, you can add an if conditional to your job: if: ${{!github.event.deleted }} [3] - Using branches or branches-ignore filters in the push event configuration will not reliably prevent the workflow from triggering when a branch is deleted, as the push event to the default branch (which happens during deletion) may still match those filters [4][2][7]. Therefore, explicit conditional checks are necessary [3].

Citations:

Exclude deleted branch events explicitly.

When a branch deletion sets github.event.deleted to true, github.event.head_commit is null. Add && !github.event.deleted to the job condition to prevent an incomplete notification.

Confirm the SMTP port configuration

The workflow passes SMTP_PORT to the pinned action with secure: true. This requires implicit TLS. Confirm that SMTP_PORT is 465 and that the server supports SMTPS. If the service uses port 587, use an action that supports STARTTLS or update the endpoint configuration.

In @.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml at line 42, Update the SMTP
notification workflow using hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action so SMTP_PORT is
confirmed as 465 with secure: true and the configured server supports implicit
TLS; if the service uses port 587, switch to an action or endpoint configuration
that supports STARTTLS.
