Migrating from CocoaPods to Swift Package Manager

psandrinelli edited this page Mar 12, 2026 · 1 revision

Overview

CocoaPods public trunk will go read-only on 2 December 2026. After this date, iProov will be unable to publish new SDK versions via CocoaPods. To ensure you continue receiving updates, we recommend migrating to Swift Package Manager (SPM) — Apple's first-party dependency manager, supported since Xcode 12.

⚠️ There is no adverse impact on your current integration before December 2026. Existing CocoaPods installations will continue to work. However, once the deadline passes, you will no longer receive new SDK releases through CocoaPods.

Prerequisites

  • Xcode 16.0 or above
  • iOS 15.0 deployment target or above
  • iProov iOS SDK v13.x (the current release at time of migration)

If you are migrating and also upgrading SDK versions, consult the Upgrade Guide alongside this document.

Step 1: Remove iProov from CocoaPods

  1. Open your project's Podfile.
  2. Remove the iProov dependency
pod 'iProov'
  1. From the terminal, reinstall pods
pod install

Step 2: Add iProov as SPM package

Installing via Xcode

  1. Select File → Add Packages… in the Xcode menu bar.

  2. Search for the SDK package using the following URL:

    https://github.com/iProov/ios-spm

  3. Set the Dependency Rule to be Up to Next Major Version and input 13.1.1 as the lower bound.

  4. Click Add Package to add the SDK to your Xcode project and then click again to confirm.

Installing via Package.swift

If you prefer, you can add iProov via your Package.swift file as follows:

.package(
	name: "iProov",
	url: "https://github.com/iProov/ios-spm.git",
	.upToNextMajor(from: "13.1.1")
),

Then add iProov to the dependencies array of any target for which you wish to use iProov.

As Swift Package Manager downloads the full repository for a package, installing this main SDK package iProov/ios can take a long time (over 2 minutes in some environments). The smaller repository iProov/ios-spm significantly reduces the SDK installation time by providing only a reference to the precompiled xcframework, which is published with the latest SDK release.

Step 3: Verify Your Integration

  1. Build your project and confirm there are no missing framework errors.
  2. Check that import iProov resolves correctly in your Swift files.
  3. Run the app on a real device to confirm the SDK initialises as expected, as the SDK cannot be tested in the Simulator.

If You Cannot Migrate Before December 2026

If your project or a third-party dependency (such as React Native or Flutter) prevents immediate migration, the following fallback is available:

  • Manual XCFramework installation — download the prebuilt iProov.xcframework directly from GitHub Releases and embed it manually in Xcode.
