For most 7B chat models FP8 (E4M3) weight-only quant is nearly lossless on standard benchmarks — single-digit perplexity delta at most — while cutting memory ~2x and boosting throughput on Hopper/Ada. The risk is task-specific: long-context reasoning and code can show small regressions. Always A/B on your own eval set before shipping; do not trust generic MMLU numbers as a proxy for your workload. |
