Telephone v0.2.0
Telephone 0.2.0
Telephone now focuses on Codex and Claude Code. Find a native thread, send a
request, and check for its reply without managing registrations or return addresses.
Messaging
- Automatically choose the polling inbox when a recipient has checked it or
requested a reply in the last 15 seconds. Renew with inbox checks; stale evidence
returns new messages to native delivery. Requests and replies route independently. - Resolve Codex MCP identity from per-call
threadId, including shared connections.
Verify Claude's nearest native ancestor before using inherited identity variables.
Fail clearly when a host cannot supply exact identity. - Explain native Codex queue versus Telephone inbox at send/read time. Add
telephone doctor <address> [--json]with routing evidence and recent outcomes.
Accepted and uncertain native sends are never mirrored or replayed. - Use
--delivery inbox/ MCPdelivery: "inbox"to explicitly select polling
for a new message.
Smaller interface and long sessions
- Three MCP tools:
list_agents,send_message,check_inbox. - Remove OpenCode, Zed, Delta and generic registration, leases and HTTP bindings.
- Shorten repeated tool and polling instructions. Request guidance appears only
where needed; replies and empty polls avoid repeated waiting recipes. - Add an optional Claude
context-hook: remind once at 250k and 300k context
tokens, resetting after compaction.telephone installprints configuration.
Setup
Breaking change: supported runtimes are Codex and Claude Code only. Remove
old generic registration setup and fixed shared-thread identities. Restart
Telephone processes and run telephone install for current configuration.
No migration or backwards-compatibility layer is provided.
See routing
and context reminders.
The binary archives include these docs.
Validation
An opt-in suite passed Codex↔Claude, Codex↔Codex and Claude↔Claude exchanges with
Codex CLI 0.155.1 and Claude Code 2.1.278 on macOS ARM64. It covers native delivery,
automatic polling, identity conflicts, correlated replies and real expiry.
The release pipeline runs isolated hardening tests on all four binary targets;
macOS downloads are signed and notarized. Native acceptance remains distinct from
read receipts. See compatibility.
Telephone v0.1.3
OpenCode, Zed and Delta can now register per-thread polling inboxes over the CLI
or MCP. Registration and send results explain how to receive expected replies.
OpenCode also supports opt-in native delivery to an existing authenticated local
session. It preserves the recorded agent/model selection and falls back to the
inbox only before sending; uncertain native sends are never retried automatically.
Desktop 1.18.31 passed real idle, busy and polling-fallback tests. Native setup is
explicit and manual; see the OpenCode guide.
telephone doctor distinguishes configured native routes from reachability.
The docs site now includes OpenCode setup and the desktop test results.
cargo install telephone --version 0.1.3 --lockedOr download an archive below and verify it against SHA256SUMS. macOS binaries
are Developer ID signed and notarized; Linux binaries are statically linked.
Extract telephone, put it on your PATH, and run telephone install for setup.
Restart existing Telephone MCP processes after upgrading.
Unsafe, experimental software. Use at your own discretion, on your own machine.
Telephone v0.1.2
macOS binaries are now Developer ID signed and notarized, for Apple Silicon and
Intel. Linux binaries remain statically linked. No messaging behavior changes.
cargo install telephone --version 0.1.2 --lockedOr download an archive below and check it against SHA256SUMS. Extract
telephone, put it on your PATH, and run telephone install for setup.
Restart existing Telephone MCP processes after upgrading.
Unsafe, experimental software. Use at your own discretion, on your own machine.
Telephone v0.1.1
Hardening fixes for local agent messaging.
- Replace the file inbox with a transactional SQLite journal. Failed output and
interrupted reads leave messages pending; replies retain their ancestry. - Validate addresses and message limits, restrict state-file permissions, and
quote peer content as untrusted data. - Bound native delivery and subprocess output, clean up child processes, and
report uncertain sends without automatically retrying them. - Bound discovery, report partial results, and distinguish verified liveness
from inferred recency. Exact addresses have a separate lookup. - Add MCP input/output deadlines and bounded queues. Ping and cancellation stay
responsive while a tool runs; cancelled inbox reads roll back.
Upgrade
cargo install telephone --version 0.1.1 --lockedOr download the archive for macOS or Linux, ARM64 or x86-64. Verify it against
SHA256SUMS before extracting. macOS binaries are ad-hoc signed, not notarized.
Restart all Telephone MCP processes after upgrading. Do not mix old file-inbox
readers with the new journal. Legacy inbox files are imported and preserved;
replies to older native messages absent from the journal are refused.
Unsafe, experimental software. Use at your own discretion, on your own machine.
Cancellation cannot recall a sent message, and output is not a read receipt.
Hard worker-shutdown bounds, diagnostic-output bounds and storage quotas remain
open work. Do not expose Telephone to external clients. See
SECURITY.md.
Telephone v0.1.0
First release of Telephone, a CLI and MCP server for messaging between local coding agents.
- Discover Claude Code and Codex sessions on the same machine.
- Send messages through Claude Code's peer socket or Codex's native queue.
- Fall back to a filesystem inbox when native delivery is unavailable.
- Use
list_agents,send_message, andcheck_inboxover MCP.
Downloads
Choose the archive for your machine. No Rust installation is needed.
| System | Archive |
|---|---|
| macOS 11+, Apple Silicon | telephone-aarch64-apple-darwin.tar.gz |
| macOS 11+, Intel | telephone-x86_64-apple-darwin.tar.gz |
| Linux, x86-64 | telephone-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz |
| Linux, ARM64 | telephone-aarch64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz |
Extract the archive, put telephone on your PATH, and run telephone install
for runtime setup instructions. Windows is not currently supported. Linux
binaries are statically linked with musl. macOS binaries are ad-hoc signed,
not Developer ID signed or notarized; macOS may require explicit approval.
SHA256SUMS contains the SHA-256 checksum for each archive. Check the downloaded
file with shasum -a 256 <archive> on macOS or sha256sum <archive> on Linux
and compare it with the matching entry before extracting it.
This is experimental software. Runtime internals may change, queued delivery
does not confirm that a message was read, and peers do not grant permissions.
