MD Viewer 3.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@ianrastall ianrastall released this 25 Oct 09:57

MD Viewer 3.0 moves the retained application into Jupiter and redesigns it as a document workbench.

  • Shared Jupiter.UI styling, standard Windows title bar and menus, dark/light themes and Windows/custom accent controls.
  • Native Markdown reading, source editing, outline, find, undo/redo, import/OCR, Pandoc export and documentation crawling retained.
  • Rust-owned ABI, document I/O, encoding preservation and atomic saves. Specialist C++ adapters remain as documented migration exceptions.
  • Per-user Windows installer, top-level Start entry MD Viewer, stable upgrade identity and data-preserving uninstall.

Windows 11 24H2 x64. .NET and Windows App SDK runtimes are bundled. Optional Pandoc and Tesseract are managed through Tools > Conversion and OCR. The installer is unsigned.

Verified locally: 3 Rust tests, 90 native checks, 141 managed workflow checks, zero Jupiter style violations, installed GUI editing/save/preview, dark/light controls, Start Menu launch, reinstall and uninstall with settings and user-data preservation. A previous 2.3 installer could not be started, so a direct 2.x-to-3.0 upgrade remains unverified; the installer identity and data paths are retained.

Install md-viewer-3.0.0-setup.exe; the installer is also inside the Windows zip. The symbols zip is for debugging.

Installer SHA-256: 2f53fa4b425e52890016cc0a2077b0b0d17b4f6a3fd5cdcf459300f920e2b885.

2.2.1 — Bounded undo history for large documents

@ianrastall ianrastall released this 17 Oct 18:04

Undo and Redo now share a 100-snapshot / 32 MiB text budget, improving memory use while editing large imported, crawled, or Markdown documents.

  • Distant history is evicted before the nearest reverse step.
  • One oversized snapshot remains reversible, so a large edit can still be undone or redone.
  • Typing, Format, Reflow, saving, and unsaved-work prompts keep their existing behavior.

Verified with 90 native checks, 89 view-model/history checks, a successful WinUI build, and the complete self-contained installer pipeline. Fourteen new checks cover memory accounting, eviction, oversized snapshots, branch invalidation, and transfers between Undo and Redo.

The Windows x64 installer is unsigned; .NET and Windows App SDK runtimes are included. Checksums are attached. See Development status for architecture, milestone reports, and remaining work.

2.2.0 — New documents and source editing

@ianrastall ianrastall released this 17 Oct 17:54

New Document and Markdown editing are here. Use New (Ctrl+N) to start a blank document, type in Source, switch to preview with Ctrl+R, and save to choose a Markdown file.

  • Editable source for new, opened, imported, and crawled documents, with preview, outline, and statistics updates after a short typing pause.
  • Shared Undo/Redo for typing, Format, and Reflow, including keyboard shortcuts and the source context menu.
  • Existing line-ending conventions preserved while editing; opening source alone does not mark a file dirty.
  • Document commands stay reserved while dialogs are open. Closing waits for pending work and protects unsaved content after failed saves.
  • Correct preview widths for short documents, relative-resource refresh after Save As, and a Tools notice that no longer covers the document.
  • Automatic recovery from a CMake cache tied to different Visual Studio tools, plus Windows CI verification.

This is the first published release of the 2.x rewrite: WinUI 3, a C++ core, a native virtualized reader, PDF text extraction/OCR, documentation crawling, Pandoc conversion, a Tools window, and a self-contained per-user installer.

Install: download the Windows x64 ZIP, extract it, and run the setup executable. Windows 10 version 2004 or later is required. .NET and Windows App SDK runtimes are included. Pandoc and Tesseract remain optional.

Signing: this build is unsigned because no code-signing certificate was available. Installation notes explain the Windows SmartScreen prompt. SHA-256 checksums are attached.

Verified locally with 90 native and 75 view-model checks, a successful WinUI build, and desktop smoke checks for new documents, editing, preview, history, and layout. The out-of-process Save As dialog was opened; completed disk saves were verified by the view-model/C ABI harness.

The full architecture, validation details, and remaining development work are in Development status.

MDViewer Windows x64 Release

This release ships MDViewer.exe, a self-contained Windows x64 build of MDViewer for reading, cleaning up, converting, and exporting Markdown documents.

What This Release Does

  • Opens .md and .txt files directly.
  • Renders Markdown in a WinUI 3 rich preview with a raw Markdown toggle.
  • Builds a heading outline from the current document so you can jump through long files.
  • Shows document stats for line count, character count, UTF-8 encoding, and zoom level.
  • Saves Markdown back to .md or .txt.
  • Formats Markdown using Markdig, including stable block spacing, ATX headings, and normalized list markers.
  • Reflows heading levels into a cleaner hierarchy and warns when manual tables of contents or anchor links may need review.
  • Imports .docx, .html, and .epub into Markdown through Pandoc.
  • Exports Markdown through Pandoc to .docx, .html, .epub, .rtf, .odt, .tex, .typ, .rst, and .org.
  • Crawls documentation sites into Markdown with a polite single-threaded crawler that respects robots.txt, keeps to the same base path, and caps crawls at 250 pages.
  • Includes a Fetch Pandoc command that downloads the latest Windows x64 Pandoc build when conversion or crawling features need it.

Requirements

  • Windows x64.
  • Windows 10 version 1809 or newer.
  • Pandoc is only required for import, export, and crawl features. Native Markdown viewing, raw view, formatting, reflow, save, zoom, and heading navigation work without Pandoc.

Pandoc Setup

For conversion and crawling, use one of these options:

  • Click Fetch Pandoc inside MDViewer. The app downloads the latest Windows x64 Pandoc release and installs it under your local app data folder.
  • Place pandoc.exe in an Assets folder beside MDViewer.exe.
  • Install Pandoc yourself and make sure pandoc.exe is available on PATH.

Running The App

Download MDViewer.exe and run it directly. This is not an installer or MSIX package.

Because this build is distributed as a direct executable, Windows SmartScreen may warn that the app is from an unknown publisher. That is expected for an unsigned release binary.

Current Limits

  • This release is Windows x64 only.
  • JavaScript-heavy documentation sites may crawl as shell pages if their content is rendered only in the browser.
  • Crawling is intentionally conservative: single-threaded, delayed between requests, same-base-path by default, and capped to avoid hammering sites.
  • Imported and crawled Markdown may still need review when source documents contain complex tables, unusual HTML, or hand-written heading anchors.
