“Somebody should look at Halvorsen. It is not hard. It is only deep.”
Vasudev Rao is fifty-one, and has spent four years failing to close the gap between what he can prove and what is true. The gap is a factor of two.
At 11:47 on a Thursday night in November, out of irritation and expecting nothing, he types the problem into a machine.
He gets an answer. What the rest of the day costs him — and what it turns out he had been walking around for four years — is the story.
Ten sections. About twenty minutes.
