this is yet another attemtpt to get this right (cf.
b426bc3a41f909e295333887e96126b7a2651b2b) - I'm not entirely confident
it is though, plus it all seems far too convoluted

this also fixes a couple of behavioral issues, e.g. not firing the
"simplete-selection" event for navigation previews
