Belvedere 2.0.1

@inquinity inquinity released this 08 Oct 19:41
v2.0.1

Belvedere 2.0.1

New in this release

  • A file that changes on disk now reloads, every time. Belvedere could stop noticing changes to an
open file if another app deleted it and wrote it back a moment later, as some tools and syncing
do; the window then kept showing the old text until you closed and reopened the file. It now keeps
looking until the file is back.
  • Changes made by another app while you are editing are no longer missed. With nothing unsaved,
the editor takes the new text. With unsaved edits, a sheet asks what to keep: Save As… (your
edits go to a new file and the other app's version stays), Overwrite (your edits replace the
file), Discard My Edits (the file's text replaces them) or Cancel. Nothing is replaced until
    you choose.
  • Wide tables are readable in the editor. In edit mode a table with one wide column squeezed the
others to a letter each ("I" over "D"); each column now keeps at least its longest word, as in the
    reading view.

Belvedere 2.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@inquinity inquinity released this 08 Oct 12:07
v2.0.0
8e52780

First released on 2026-10-06, the date of the v2.0.0 tag. This release page was re-created on 2026-10-08 when the repository was replaced, so GitHub shows that date; the file and its checksum are identical.

Belvedere 2.0.0

New in this release

  • File ▸ Open Folder…. A folder picker of its own, which also works with no
window open. Dropping a folder on the Dock icon opens it too, and the button in
Go to File's empty state uses the same picker.
  • Search for Document is now Go to File…, in the Go menu, still on ⇧⌘O. It jumps to a
file in the opened folder by name, so the new name says what it does and leaves ⇧⌘F free
for a search of file text later.
  • Full Width is the default, and each window can have its own width. Documents now use the
whole window and follow it as you resize. The capped column, called Normal before, is now Quick
    Look Width
, because it wraps lines where a Quick Look preview does. View ▸ Content Width
changes the front window only and is not saved; Settings › General › Default content width
is the width new windows and tabs open with, and windows that are already open keep theirs. Anyone who had chosen the old Normal width will see Full Width until they
    choose Quick Look Width.
  • Belvedere is English only. The Chinese translation is removed, because no one here can keep it
current and a half-translated interface is worse than a consistent one. Documents in any language
    still display normally.
  • Lines now run together by default, as in standard Markdown, and each window can choose. A single
new line in the source is a space, so a hard-wrapped file reflows to the window the way a README
shows on GitHub, in the app and in Quick Look. The setting is now Single new lines, with
Reflow (like a README), the default, and Break (like a comment), which shows every new
line as a line break. Settings › General holds the default for new windows and tabs, and
View › Single New Lines changes the front window only, without saving it. Anyone who had
chosen the old Keep as typed sees Reflow until they choose Break again.
  • Changing the width, font or line-break setting keeps your place instead of jumping back to the
top of the document, in the reading view and the editor.
  • Tab in a table cell selects the next cell's text. Tab, Shift-Tab and Enter move to the
neighbouring cell with its contents selected, so typing replaces them, as in Word and
Numbers. Before, the cell was only shaded and nothing was selected.
  • ⌘N always opens a new window. With Prefer tabs on in macOS, or Belvedere's own Open documents in
    tabs
, a new document used to join the front window as a tab. ⌘T is still the way to ask for a tab.
  • Hover a link to see where it really goes. A small bar at the bottom of the window shows a link's
actual destination, as a browser's status bar does, not the words the document used for it. A web
address keeps its whole host, a relative link shows the file it points to, and an internationalised
address appears in its safe xn-- form.
  • Go to File no longer offers names that only contain your letters scattered about. Typing man
used to offer remote-beacon.md. Abbreviations such as ug for user-guide.md still work.
  • A clearer outline setting. Highlight outline section under the pointer now explains itself with an
    info popover in Settings.
  • Links now use belvedere://. Belvedere no longer answers md-preview:// links, because that
scheme belongs to the Markdown Preview app it was forked from. Change any saved link to
    belvedere://file/<absolute path>.
  • Belvedere now requires macOS 26. Earlier releases stay available for macOS 15 and later. Dropping the older systems removed a second layout path for the window and toolbar, so there is one to test and one to keep correct.
  • Runs natively on Intel Macs as well as Apple silicon. The release is a universal build.
  • A link in a document can no longer start a program. Clicking a link to a local file opens it
only if it is an image, audio, video, a PDF, plain text or a folder. Anything else, including
apps, installers, scripts and files that start one, is shown in Finder so you can decide, and so
is any file set to open in an app of its own choosing. This closes ways past the earlier check:
a link through a symlink to an app, or to a Terminal settings file, could start a program on
one click. Links to other documents, such as HTML or Word files, are now shown in Finder
    rather than opened.
  • A link can no longer open a folder without asking. A belvedere:// link that names a folder now
asks first, because a link can come from a web page and opening a folder lets the documents shown in
that window display images from it. Opening a folder from Finder, the Dock or Open With is your own
    doing and still happens directly.
  • Open Belvedere once after upgrading. Your saved settings are carried over to the new names the
first time the app starts, and Quick Look previews use the defaults until then.

Belvedere 1.3.2

Choose a tag to compare

@inquinity inquinity released this 08 Oct 12:07
v1.3.2
849d9ac

First released on 2026-10-05, the date of the v1.3.2 tag. This release page was re-created on 2026-10-08 when the repository was replaced, so GitHub shows that date; the file and its checksum are identical.

Belvedere 1.3.2

New in this release

  • Wide tables are readable again. Since 1.3.0, a table with one long column squeezed the short
columns to a single letter per line. Short columns now keep their words and the table scrolls
    sideways instead.

Belvedere 1.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@inquinity inquinity released this 08 Oct 12:07
v1.3.1
f1e4d32

First released on 2026-10-01, the date of the v1.3.1 tag. This release page was re-created on 2026-10-08 when the repository was replaced, so GitHub shows that date; the file and its checksum are identical.

Belvedere 1.3.1

New in this release

  • Belvedere will not change files inside an application. Editing or saving a
document that is part of an app bundle, such as Belvedere's own Acknowledgements page,
is refused with an explanation, because it would break that app's signature.
Save As… to a copy still works.
  • Images from an opened folder keep loading after you save or leave edit mode.
Before, a document from outside the folder you had opened lost them again.

Belvedere 1.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@inquinity inquinity released this 08 Oct 12:07
v1.3.0
8339456

First released on 2026-09-30, the date of the v1.3.0 tag. This release page was re-created on 2026-10-08 when the repository was replaced, so GitHub shows that date; the file and its checksum are identical.

Belvedere 1.3.0

New in this release

  • The app and its Quick Look extension can now share settings. Releases
through 1.2.4 were signed without access to the storage the two share, so
appearance and theme changes made in Belvedere could not reach Quick Look
previews. Your existing reading settings — appearance, theme, font, spacing
and custom colors — carry over when you update.
  • Tighter folder boundary for a document's images. An image is now checked
and read as one step, so a file swapped for a link at the wrong moment cannot
slip past the boundary, and a document cannot make Belvedere open a device or
pipe and hang. The boundary also follows a document that is renamed or moved
while open, and applies in the editor when you open a folder mid-edit.
  • Line breaks. Settings › General › Reading lets you choose how a single
new line in the source is shown: Keep as typed (the default) or Join into
    paragraphs
, with an ⓘ that explains both. Applies to the reading view and
    Quick Look.

Upstream features included in release

New

  • Search for Document — File › Search for Document… (⇧⌘O) finds a file in the
open folder by part of its name.
  • Code blocks have rounded corners, a language label, and buttons to copy the
    code or wrap long lines.
  • Formatting controls float over the document in Liquid Glass on macOS 26, with
    native popovers.
  • Documents open faster.
  • The reading view is read-only. Tick tasks and edit tables in Edit Mode, where
task checkboxes are now clickable and lists continue as you type.
  • Themes with fixed colors keep the light or dark appearance they were made for.

Fixed

  • Scrolling no longer stalls over wide content in the reading view.
  • Colors follow the system when it switches between light and dark on its own.
  • The Original theme remembers its appearance, and document backgrounds match the
    system's.
  • List markers and list accents take the theme's colors.
  • Dotted arrows in Mermaid diagrams draw correctly.
  • The back and forward toolbar buttons look right again.
  • In Edit Mode: search highlighting and navigation work; the first click lands the
cursor where you expect; selecting with the pointer no longer jumps while Markdown
syntax is showing; text size changes apply; and Chinese, Japanese and Korean input
    methods compose correctly.
  • Switching between reading and editing keeps your place, without overlapping text.
  • Switching files in the sidebar while editing keeps the right document in the
editor, and pending edits are saved when you leave Edit Mode.
  • Formatting buttons align on macOS 27, and the sidebar toolbar and editor
background are right on macOS 15.
  • In Search for Document, long paths shorten in the middle, and the search field and
    sidebar collapse line up.

Belvedere 1.2.4

Choose a tag to compare

@inquinity inquinity released this 08 Oct 12:07

First released on 2026-09-15, the date of the v1.2.4 tag. This release page was re-created on 2026-10-08 when the repository was replaced, so GitHub shows that date; the file and its checksum are identical.

Belvedere 1.2.4

Based on Markdown Preview 0.0.58.

New in this release

  • Opening a project folder widens where a document's images may load from: a
document inside the opened folder can now reach anywhere within it, not just
its own folder — the sidebar's root names which folder is in effect, the same
way it always has. Matches Markdown Preview #337.
  • Clicking a link is no longer bound to the document's folder — matching
Markdown Preview, the click is the decision. A link to a program, script,
installer or disk image is still shown in Finder rather than started,
    wherever it points.
  • New from Markdown Preview 0.0.58: a leftover control from a stripped
<form> — a button, input, or image sitting directly in the document —
keeps its natural width instead of stretching across the column; images
align with surrounding text and use normal paragraph spacing in both
reading and editing; and the sidebar stops shrinking before its pane
    picker would overflow.

Changes on top of Markdown Preview 0.0.58

Belvedere is Markdown Preview with its network connections removed and its handling
of untrusted documents tightened. Reading, editing, printing, PDF export and Quick
Look are upstream's work.

It never connects on its own

  • No crash reporting and no usage analytics. The code that sent them is gone, so
Settings › Privacy states this instead of offering switches.
  • No automatic updates, and no Check for Updates…. New versions come through
    Homebrew: brew upgrade --cask belvedere.

A document cannot reach the network, or files outside its folder

  • Remote content — images, stylesheets, fonts, scripts — is blocked in the document
window, the editor and Quick Look. A remote image shows as a placeholder naming its
host, so opening a document never tells its author that you read it.
  • Images load from the document's own folder, or — if you open the project folder
it lives in — from that folder instead; the sidebar's root names which one is
in effect. A file outside that boundary, or a remote image, shows as a
placeholder with a Load button: one click, checked to be a real image
first, and not remembered — a remote fetch carries no cookies and grants
nothing to that host next time. Load all covers local files only. Quick Look
has no opened folder to widen into, so it always uses the document's own, and
names blocked files without offering Load.
  • Clicking a link is never blocked by the folder boundary — matching Markdown
Preview, the click is the decision, and its destination opens like any other file.
  • A link to a program — an app, a script, an installer, a disk image — is shown in
Finder rather than started, wherever it points, including inside the document's
own folder or the opened project folder. Links to ordinary documents open as
    usual.
  • A document cannot draw form controls — no text fields, dropdowns or other inputs
that could imitate a sign-in prompt. Task-list checkboxes still work.

Ahead of Markdown Preview

Proposed to Markdown Preview and carried here until it merges them:

  • A Save button in the default toolbar, lit whenever the document has unsaved
changes. Leaving edit mode with unsaved changes asks
    Save / Revert… / Continue, with a setting to keep the old silent exit;
Save As… and Revert to Saved work, and ⌘S works after leaving edit mode.

Its own app

  • Named Belvedere, with its own icon and bundle identifier, so it installs alongside
Markdown Preview instead of replacing it.
  • The command-line tools installer is removed, along with the permission to control
    Terminal that it needed.
  • The About box states the network posture above and credits Markdown Preview.
  • Signed with Belvedere's own Developer ID, notarized by Apple, and distributed
    through the Homebrew tap inquinity/tap/belvedere.

Belvedere 1.2.3

Choose a tag to compare

@inquinity inquinity released this 08 Oct 12:07

First released on 2026-09-14, the date of the v1.2.3 tag. This release page was re-created on 2026-10-08 when the repository was replaced, so GitHub shows that date; the file and its checksum are identical.

Belvedere 1.2.3

Based on Markdown Preview 0.0.57, plus one upstream change made after that release — listed at the end.

New in this release

  • Arrow keys and space work in Quick Look again. The preview no longer takes
keyboard focus, so the keys move the Finder selection and space dismisses the
preview instead of scrolling the document. The trade: to select and copy the
rendered text with ⌘A / ⌘C, click into the preview first — until then they copy
nothing, as in Apple's own text and PDF previews. The Copy button still copies
    the Markdown without that click.
  • Remote images can now be loaded with a click. Nothing is fetched when a
document opens, so opening one still never tells its author that you read it.
A placeholder names the host, and Load fetches that one image — no
cookies, nothing remembered, and the next remote image asks again. Load all
stays local-only, and Quick Look still names remote images without offering to
    load them.
  • Settings › Privacy now describes a blocked remote image the way it actually
appears — a placeholder naming the host — instead of calling it broken.
  • The toolbar Save button is icon-only, like the other toolbar buttons.
  • Security fix (GHSA-42qg-98g7-78q4).
A crafted Markdown document could close the internal element that holds
unsanitised content early — by spelling its end tag in uppercase — and run
script in the preview before the sanitiser saw it, on open or Quick Look
preview. Belvedere's content policy already blocked such a document from
reaching the network; the script could still alter the open file through the
preview's edit bridge. The document body is now escaped so the element
cannot be closed, whatever the tag's case. Reported upstream; also filed as
    pluk-inc/markdown-preview#398.
  • New from Markdown Preview 0.0.57: bare http:// and https:// addresses are
clickable; .mdx files open as Markdown, with their JSX, imports and expressions
shown as text rather than compiled; clicking a folder row in the project navigator
expands or collapses it; bullet markers keep their spacing; and the full-screen
toolbar keeps a custom theme colour.

First released on 2026-09-11, the date of the v1.2.2 tag. This release page was re-created on 2026-10-08 when the repository was replaced, so GitHub shows that date; the file and its checksum are identical.

Belvedere 1.2.2

Based on Markdown Preview 0.0.56, plus 4 upstream changes made after that release — listed at the end.

New in this release

  • A link to a program is shown, not run. Clicking a link to an app, a script,
an installer or a disk image now reveals it in Finder after telling you why,
instead of starting it. Links to ordinary documents — a PDF, an image — open as

Belvedere 1.2.1

New in this release

  • Mermaid diagrams draw again in the document window. In 1.2.0 every diagram

Belvedere 1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@inquinity inquinity released this 08 Oct 12:06

First released on 2026-09-10, the date of the v1.2.0 tag. This release page was re-created on 2026-10-08 when the repository was replaced, so GitHub shows that date; the file and its checksum are identical.

Belvedere 1.2.0

Known issue — fixed in 1.2.1:
Mermaid diagrams draw as an empty gap in the document window. Upgrade with
brew upgrade --cask belvedere.

Based on Markdown Preview 0.0.56, plus four upstream changes made after that
release — they are listed at the end.

New in this release

  • A Save button in the toolbar, next to Edit, lit whenever the document has unsaved
changes — in edit mode or after leaving it.
  • Leaving edit mode with unsaved changes now asks Save / Revert… / Continue. Continue,
also on Escape, keeps the changes unsaved as before; Revert… asks for confirmation first.
To keep the old silent behaviour, turn on Settings › General › Editing › Leave edit mode
    without asking to save
    .
  • File › Save As… now works for any open document, and Revert to Saved (⌘R)
whenever there are unsaved changes. Both were always disabled before.
  • ⌘S now works after leaving edit mode with unsaved changes. Before, the only way to
write them was to close the window.

From upstream Markdown Preview, 0.0.54 through 0.0.56 and the changes after it:

  • The system type scale and semantic colours, code highlighting done at render time,
    and Copy as Source.
  • A new reading layout, with better alignment for right-to-left text, and tighter
    reader margins as an option.
  • Obsidian-style ==highlight== syntax.
  • The sidebar has a pane picker and the system sidebar toggle in place of its pulldown.
  • A setting to open Markdown links in new windows; a working link context menu (Open
Link, Open Link in New Window, Copy Link); and the Window menu tells apart documents
with the same file name. In Belvedere, a link outside the document's folder gets no
context menu, just as clicking it does nothing.
  • Optional highlighting of the outline section under the pointer.
  • Simpler application-menu grouping, and fixes to toolbar and search-bar backgrounds
    on macOS 15 and 26.

Changes on top of Markdown Preview 0.0.56

  • Images load only from the document's own folder. One outside it shows as a
placeholder with a Load button: one click, checked to be a real image first,
and not remembered. Quick Look names these without offering Load.
  • A link outside the document's folder does nothing when clicked, and has no context
    menu.
  • A document cannot draw form controls — no text fields, dropdowns or other inputs
that could imitate a sign-in prompt. Task-list checkboxes still work.

Editing

  • The Save button and the prompt when leaving edit mode, described above. Also
proposed to Markdown Preview; carried here ahead of that.

Upstream changes after 0.0.56 included in this build

These are on Markdown Preview's main but not yet in one of its releases:

  • The system type scale and semantic colours, code highlighting at render time, and
    Copy as Source.
  • Obsidian-style ==highlight== syntax.
  • The new reading layout and right-to-left alignment.
  • The sidebar pane picker.
