If a response doesn't validate or "match", let's attach it's serialized and deserialized (best effort, e.g. potentially an untyped dict from cbor2) to the exception. I'd love to add that exception to the return type union, but it's just a bit too Rust I think.

Would be something like:

Unblocked — the blocker JPHutchins/smp#62 has landed on smp's screaming-goblin: the generic request/response pattern now lives in smp as SMPRequest, binding each request to its Response/ErrorV1/ErrorV2.

So removing smpclient's own generic pattern proceeds on smpclient's screaming-goblin branch, which will pin smp's screaming-goblin — that lets us stage the migration across smp → smpclient → smpmgr before smp cuts its breaking release, after which the pin moves to the released version. Tracked under the epic intercreate/smpmgr#103.

Pickup details (actionable without spelunking)

Pin (smpclient screaming-goblin; it's uv + hatchling): add the source override alongside the existing PEP 621 smp dependency —

This pins dev/CI to the branch; swap to the released version once smp cuts it.

smp API surface (on screaming-goblin) to migrate against:

• A message is Frame[T] = (header: Header, data: T), where T is a Data (msgspec struct). Serialize with bytes(frame); deserialize with SomeData.loads(frame_bytes) -> Frame[T] (validates header group/length; returns .header + .data); build a request frame with req.to_frame().
• smp.SMPRequest is a Protocol[_TRep_co, _TEr1_co, _TEr2_co] exposing _Response / _ErrorV1 / _ErrorV2 (as type[...]) and to_frame(). Concrete requests satisfy it structurally.
• Responses carry a RESPONSE_TYPE ClassVar (ResponseType.SUCCESS / ERROR_V1 / ERROR_V2) — the runtime discriminator.

Consumer contract to port: smp's tests/test_generics_typing.py is the reference. It holds the request(req: SMPRequest[TRep, TEr1, TEr2]) -> TRep | TEr1 | TEr2 stub and the TypeIs narrowing helpers (success / error_v1 / error_v2 / error, keyed on RESPONSE_TYPE) — deliberately kept out of the lib so the consumer owns them. smpclient should implement its real SMPClient.request() + narrowing from that pattern.
