Retake Pro 1.0.44
Changes
- Mouse clicks belong to the video rather than to a clip. A click is a moment of the timeline: it may be dragged anywhere along it, onto any recording, with nothing to catch on at a clip's edges. It keeps clear of the clicks already on the recording it lands on, and a recording with no pointer of its own, such as a picture, takes none.
- A press and its release stay together on the timeline. They may be either side of a cut that the footage carries straight through, such as a plain split, since the gesture is unbroken there. Where footage between them has been cut out, the gesture ends at the cut: a button is never shown held across material that is not in the video.
- A click whose footage is trimmed off the timeline is kept, and shows again when that footage is trimmed back into view.
- Zooms never overlap. Dragging or trimming a zoom stops at its neighbours, so two zooms may meet but never cover the same moment. A zoom arriving inside another, by pasting or from an older project, begins where that one ends.
- Two zooms that meet ease from one framing to the other. Previously the picture snapped between them; the easing is still removed between the two halves of a zoom that was split, which hold the same framing.
- Pins, which zoom targets and pointer keyframes snap to, are now called pins rather than zoom pins, since they anchor both.
Fixes
- The pointer's path on the preview is drawn through every keyframe, so a keyframe dragged away from its neighbours stays on the line.
- Deleting the mouse events in a pointer range is one step, so one undo restores both the clicks and the keyframes.
Projects made with earlier versions open unchanged; their clicks keep their times, their holds and the recordings they were made on.
Retake Pro 1.0.43
Features
- Zooms are regions again. Each zoom is one block on the Zoom lane, drawn by dragging along the lane, with its own scale, ease in and ease out. A zoom is moved, trimmed, split and deleted as a block. Projects made with versions 1.0.33 to 1.0.42, which held zooms as control points, open as regions that play exactly as before; the previous project file is kept in the project folder.
- A zoom may aim at the pointer, at a fixed point, or at a pin. The target is chosen for the selected zoom, and a fixed target is placed by dragging it on the preview or in the focus pad.
- Pins. A pin marks a place on the picture that zoom targets and pointer keyframes snap to and are glued to. Moving a pin moves everything glued to it, so several zooms, or a stretch of the pointer's path, may be re-aimed at once. Pins are shown with View › Show Pins, and snapping happens only while they are shown; holding Shift while dragging turns it off.
- Zooms track in smoothly. A zoom now eases about the place it is heading for, rather than drifting as it grows.
- Each lane can be turned off. A tick box appears on a lane's caption when the pointer is over it. A lane that is off is dimmed, and what is on it plays no part in the preview or an export; its contents stay on the timeline and may still be edited.
- A playback speed slider beside the play buttons. The preview plays at any speed from 0.25× to 2×, labelled at 0.25×, 1× and 2×, with normal speed in the middle, where the slider catches. Clicking a label goes straight to that speed. It changes the preview only: the project and its exports are unaffected.
Fixes
- Changing the playback speed while playing no longer stalls the picture and then jumps it.
- Playback stops at the end of the Capture lane whatever the speed, and no longer runs on past it or stops responding at it.
- Pressing play starts the preview straight away, including the first play after a project is opened and immediately after clicking a new place on the timeline.
- The pointer's path on the preview is drawn through every keyframe, so a keyframe dragged away from its neighbours stays on the line.
The user manual, in the app under Help, covers the new zoom regions, pins, turning a lane off and the playback speed slider.
Retake Pro 1.0.42
Fixes
- Nothing is played or exported after the end of the Capture lane. A voiceover, camera take or music item that runs on past the last screen clip now stops at the end of the video, in playback and in export. The part past the end remains visible in the shaded area of the timeline and may be moved back into the video.
Retake Pro 1.0.41
New
- Recreate Selected Path: while a range is selected on the Mouse lane, the Recreate button in the Pointer tab reads Recreate Selected Path and replaces the pointer's movement within that range only. The new path starts where the existing path has the pointer at the start of the range and rejoins it at the end.
- Mouse-up events: the Mouse lane shows every mouse-up. A downward-pointing cyan triangle marks each mouse-down and an upward-pointing triangle its mouse-up, joined by a line that is brighter for a drag. A mouse-up may be dragged to change how long the button is held.
Changes
- Drags are taken only from the recorded mouse-down and mouse-up: a click is a drag when the recorded pointer moved while the button was held. Nothing is estimated.
- When a project recorded before 1.0.40 is opened, a mouse-up is added 0.2 seconds after each mouse-down, and the status bar says so.
- A mouse-down and its mouse-up are kept together. Deleting either deletes both. Another click cannot come between them, and when a cut falls between them, the mouse-up is moved to just before the cut.
- The Human slider sits beside the Recreate button.
Retake Pro 1.0.40
New
- Recreate Whole Path in the Pointer tab replaces the pointer's movement over the whole project with a new path. The pointer remains still between clicks and moves only to reach the next click; drags keep their recorded route, lightly smoothed. The path continues across cuts between clips. Human sets how regular the moves are, from smooth eased curves at 0% to a less even path at 100%. The command is one step to undo.
- Make Less Boring in the Timeline tab cuts out every stretch longer than the Boredom threshold (0.5 to 10 seconds) in which nothing moves on screen and nothing is heard but music. Microphone and voiceover sound is measured after the noise gate. Music is not cut, and each cut dissolves over 0.25 seconds. Progress is shown with a Cancel button, and the result lists each cut. All the cuts are one step to undo.
- The Mouse lane shows each drag as a line from the press to the release. Recordings now store when each button is released.
Changes
- The pointer overlay range is now 1 s or 10 s either side of the playhead; 10 s replaces All.
- When the picture is turned in 3D, the pointer overlay's path, keyframes and rings are drawn on the turned picture, and each overlay frame is shown together with its frame of the picture.
Fixes
- Pointer smoothing uses only the part of the recording shown in each clip, so the pointer no longer jumps about either side of a cut.
- Moving the mouse over the timeline and the preview is more responsive: the pointer shape is set only when it changes.
Retake Pro 1.0.39
Changes
- The edition of Retake sold from the download page is now called Retake Pro. It has its own bundle identifier, so macOS keeps its permissions and settings separate from the Mac App Store edition, and the two can no longer be confused when both are installed.
- After this update macOS asks again for the Screen Recording, Input Monitoring, Camera and Microphone permissions. The Setup Assistant opens at the first launch and guides each one. Preferences, presets and the licence are carried over.
- Licences are now sold at retake-pro.com. The licence window has a Buy a License… button that opens the price section of the site.
- The user manual is now the Retake Pro User Manual, written for this edition only. It is opened from Help › User Manual and is also available at retake-pro.com.
Retake 1.0.38
Fixes
- The Transcript in the Captions tab now shows the whole narration. Previously only the first few paragraphs were shown, and the rest could not be scrolled to.
Retake 1.0.37
Captions in the video
- Captions can now be drawn in the preview and in exported movies and GIFs. Turn on Show captions in the new Captions tab of the inspector.
- Animation offers Phrase, Highlight, Word by Word, Pop, Slide Up, Fly In, Fly Across, Zoom and Typewriter.
- Font offers Rounded, System, Serif and Monospaced, the typefaces used most recently, and Choose Font…, which opens a font picker listing every installed family and each of its weights, italics and widths.
- Position, Background, Size, and the Text and Highlight colours are also set in the Captions tab. The caption settings are part of a preset.
- Transcription now records the time of each word. Narration transcribed by an earlier version is timed in proportion to word length until it is transcribed again.
- File › Export Subtitles… saves the captions as an SRT or WebVTT file.
Editing the video by its transcript
- The Transcript section of the Captions tab shows all narration as text. Clicking a word moves the playhead to it.
- Selecting words and pressing ⌘Delete, or choosing Delete from Video, cuts that stretch out of the screen clips, narration, music and speed changes. Typing in the transcript corrects the captions without cutting the video.
- Shorten Pauses shortens pauses longer than a second to 0.4 seconds. Remove Fillers cuts filler words such as um and uh that appear in the transcript.
Fixes
- The microphone take recorded with the screen now uses the microphone chosen in the Microphone tab. Previously it recorded from the Mac's default input.
- Microphone and camera takes recorded with the screen now duck the music. They still do not duck the screen audio recorded with them. Projects saved by earlier versions are converted when opened.
Licensing
- Captions count as a Full Version feature only when they are drawn in the video. Exporting subtitles is available in the free version.
Retake 1.0.36
- When Retake first starts after an update has been installed, a dialog says that it has been updated and gives the version now installed. What's New opens the release page for that version (RET-147).
Retake 1.0.35
- Changing a volume, a fade or the ducking while the video plays no longer stops playback; the change is heard at once (RET-146).
- A new overlay starts slightly smaller than the frame, and the handles of an overlay at the edge of the picture can now be grabbed (RET-144).
- Sound files dragged from the Finder onto the timeline go on the Music lane at the drop point (RET-145).
- The System audio lane is shown only when the recordings have sound, also while every lane is shown (RET-143).
- The camera thumbnail in Preflight Check keeps its Circle shape with the System Default camera, and shows its picture reliably (RET-142).
