ctypes function crashes notebook but not shell

Unfortunately I can't provide any code to reproduce this issue at the moment. I mostly hope that this is something that has been encountered before and that someone knows what might be happening. If not, is there a way to get debug logs from the kernel while running jupyter notebook? The kernel crashes before I can record any logs from within the C library I'm using. I'll try and create some code to reproduce the issue soon.

Not an issue with IPython or Jupyter.

I was registering a callback function with the library that was getting garbage collected because I wasn't keeping a reference to it. The difference I experienced between the notebook and the shell was that depending on how I split up cells of execution garbage collection occurred sooner or later. If it occurred sooner the C library attempted to call a non-existent function and crashed.

Solution: keep a reference to the callback.
