Set-Up

Set-Up is the terminal's own configuration, as on the hardware. Press F3 (or choose Set-Up in the window menu). What you see depends on the model:

• VT100 to VT420 show the VT420's Set-Up screens (Installing and Using the VT420 Video Terminal, chapter 5), described first below.
• VT510, VT520 and VT525 show the VT500 series' pull-right menus (EK-VT520-RM chapter 2); see VT500 menus.

While Set-Up is open the host is held, so nothing it sends is lost, and the status line stays at the bottom of the screen.

Moving around

Every screen has To Next Set-Up and To Directory fields.

Set-Up Directory

Saved settings

Save writes the settings for this model and session to your configuration directory:

• Linux: ~/.config/veetee/setup-vt420-session1.conf
• Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\veetee\setup-vt420-session1.conf

They are the terminal's power-up settings: veetee starts with them, and a host reset (RIS) or Recall returns to them. Default deletes the file and goes back to the factory settings. A second session (--sessions 2) has its own file.

The screens

Global — On Line or Local (Local holds the host and echoes what you type), the session arrangement, CRT Saver, the Comm1 connector, refresh rate and printer assignment.

Display — 80 or 132 columns, Interpret or Display Controls, Auto Wrap, Smooth-2, Smooth-4 or Jump Scroll, Dark or Light Screen, Cursor and cursor style (block or underline), the status display (none, indicator or host-writable), cursor blink, page arrangement (for example 6x24 pages), lines per screen, vertical and page coupling, Auto Resize Screen.

General — terminal mode (VT400 mode with 7-bit or 8-bit controls, VT300, VT200, VT100 or VT52 mode), user-defined keys locked, user features locked, 8-bit or 7-bit NRCS characters, numeric or application keypad, normal or application cursor keys, New Line, the user-preferred supplemental set (DEC Supplemental or ISO Latin-1), the terminal ID reported to the host, and the inactive session update method.

Communications — transmit and receive speed, XOFF point, data bits and parity, stop bits, local echo, modem control, disconnect delay, transmit rate limit, auto answerback, the answerback message (typed on the bottom line, up to 30 characters; F3 cancels) and whether it is concealed.

Printer — printing is not available yet.

Keyboard — typewriter or data processing keys, Caps or Shift Lock, auto repeat, keyclick, margin bell and warning bell volumes (high, low or off), character or key position mode, the <X] key (Delete or Backspace), the compose and Alt keys, what F1–F5 do (their own function, a function key code, or nothing), and the ,< .>, <> and `~ key options.

Tab — Clear all tabs, Set 8 column tabs, and a ruler: move along it and press Return to set or clear a tab stop (there is never a tab in column 1).

What takes effect

Most settings change the terminal when you leave Set-Up. Some are kept, saved and restored but do not change veetee's behaviour yet: serial line settings (use the --serial options), modem control, refresh rate, printer assignment, user features lock, and the compose, Alt, F5 and ,< <> `~ key options. The compatibility matrix lists the details.

The VT100 and VT220 had Set-Up screens of their own; veetee shows the VT420 layout for them.

VT500 menus

On a VT510, VT520 or VT525 Set-Up opens on the main menu, with the submenu of the highlighted item shown beside it:

☒ and ☐ are check boxes; ◆ marks the chosen setting of a radio group and ◇ the others. The bottom line is the Set-Up summary line — session and port, speed with parity, data bits and stop bits (such as 9600N81), the default character set, the keyboard, the emulation and the version. A message such as Done takes its place until the next key.

Answerback message... opens a dialog: type the message (Return enters a CR), press Down to reach OK or Cancel, and Return. Pressing F3 in a dialog accepts it and leaves Set-Up.

Dimmed items are features veetee does not have: the clock, calculator and character set display, banner message, session names and page allocation, colour assignment, the ASCII emulations, printer settings, key definition, PC keyboards, and Set-Up in languages other than English.

Display Controls

Display Controls (VT420 Display Set-Up) or Show control characters (VT500 Display menu) turns on control representation mode, for seeing exactly what a host sends. Every character is shown instead of performed: control characters appear as their names in small letters stacked in one cell (ESC, CSI, BEL…; two letters on 36- and 48-line screens). LF, VT and FF are shown and then start a new line, and lines always wrap. A secure reset from the host (DECSR) ends the mode; otherwise turn it off in Set-Up.
