The first public release of PixCap — capture, annotate, and beautify
screenshots on macOS and Windows.

Two native apps over one shared Rust core. Nothing leaves your machine: there
is no account, no telemetry, and no server to upload to.

⚠️ Windows will warn you before installing

The Windows installers are not code-signed, so SmartScreen shows
"Windows protected your PC". To install: More info → Run anyway.

That warning is honest — it means the publisher is unverified, not that the
file is safe. Verify the download against the checksum below before running it,
or build from source. A signing certificate is on the list.

macOS is signed and notarised by Apple, so it opens normally with no warning
and no right-click-Open workaround.

The Windows app is younger than the macOS one, and the table is honest about
it rather than promising parity that is not there.

Worth knowing about redaction

Export, copy, share, and pin all flatten the image — annotations and
redactions are composited into the pixels and the original cannot be recovered
from the result.

Save editable copy is the deliberate exception: it writes the untouched
source beside a .pixcap.json sidecar so you can resume editing later. Your
redactions are stored there as instructions, not applied to the image, so that
file is for you and not for sending. The app warns you before writing one.

Text extraction respects this too. OCR runs on the source for accuracy, so it
does see what is under a blur — any line a redaction covers is dropped before
it reaches the clipboard.

Requirements

  • macOS 14 or newer. First launch asks for Screen Recording permission;
    macOS applies it at launch, so quit and reopen PixCap after granting it.
  • Windows 10 version 1903 or newer. The installer fetches the .NET 8
    Desktop Runtime and the Windows App Runtime if they are missing, so the
    download stays around 11 MB and both get serviced by Windows Update.

Known gaps

  • Windows installers are unsigned (see above).
  • Windows lacks recording, OCR, pin-to-screen, and the Quick Access overlay.
    Scrolling capture works in the core but has no UI yet.
  • Region capture cannot span two displays. macOS behaves the same way, so this
    is a match rather than a regression.
