Smoke #2 spun for 30+ min after work was done because _count_pending used dead Phase-8.1 legacy fields (enriched_at, reviewed_*_at) and overcounted by 148 phantom rows. Phase 1 (commit 0531d50) replaced the watchdog with _compute_pool_pending. This test ensures any future regression to dead- field queries is caught immediately: graph populated with only superseded + exhausted nodes must exit cleanly within 30s with no_eligible_work. Pre-flight assertion directly invokes _compute_pool_pending against real graph data carrying legacy fields; returns 0 for all 6 pools. Pipeline run (with tightened idle thresholds and mocked claims/seeding) exits in ~1s. If the query were ever regressed to dead-field matching, the pre-flight assertion fails before run_sn_pools is even called.
