ChromIQ v4.3.10
For everyone updating from 4.3.9: ChromIQ now notices when a strip was read one patch out of place, even only a few patches of it, and names that strip in the Measurement Report. Measuring can pause after each page so you can look it over. A chart a little too large for small photo paper prints at full size when only empty margin goes over the edge. And Check & Refine checks a profile against a verification print. One fix matters for everyone: a press of the instrument's button while the window at the end of a measurement is open no longer reads a strip or patch again behind that window. The beta entry below has the first part of these changes.
Added
- Pause after each page (jctay, forum post 149802): a new option in Preferences > Measurement, off by default. After the last strip of each page, and after the very last strip of the chart, ChromIQ waits so you can look the page over in the preview, read any strip again, and then go on. Press the button on your i1Pro or ColorMunki, or click Continue. That press only continues: it never starts a reading. A second option, on by default, shows a short note at the pause that says why nothing is moving and what to do next. (New texts, shown and waiting for approval.)
- A warning for short slips of only two or three patches at the start or end of a strip, or in the middle of it, in addition to the longer slips 4.3.10-beta.1 already caught. It uses the same switch, "Warn me if a strip looks misaligned". Tested on every real measurement we have and on about two million simulated strips: no false warnings on the real ones. (New texts, shown and waiting for approval.)
- Create Chart: two new photo papers, "10 × 15 cm (100 × 150 mm)" and "Postcard (100 × 148 mm)" (jctay, forum post 149803). Many printers sold for 4 × 6 in photos print exactly these sizes, not 102 × 152 mm. Charts and presets made before keep their paper as they were.
- Preferences > Measurement: "Show the expected · measured label on the chart preview", on by default.
Changed
- A chart a little larger than the paper is printed at exactly 100 %, without a question, when only empty margin, the end of ArgyllCMS's small print line or the short ruler marks go over the edge (jctay and Knut, forum posts 149803/149804). Patches, strip letters and numbers, and the white paper the instrument needs before and after each strip are never cut. If more would be cut, ChromIQ says what and why: through the macOS or Windows print dialog nothing is printed then; with ChromIQ's own printing you can still print it. ChromIQ never shrinks a chart. (New texts, shown and waiting for approval.)
- The help card "Check a finished profile" now includes checking the profile on the Check & Refine tab, re-reading the strips with the largest errors, starting every strip on the white paper rather than on its number, and making the report after re-reading (Knut). (New texts, shown and waiting for approval.)
- ChromIQ's own limit sets judge grey balance a little differently, and the mid-tone ramps too (Knut's proposal, approved by Basti). The average grey balance (ΔCh) limit is now 2.0 in ChromIQ default and 4.0 in Quick check (it was 1.5 and 3.0; ChromIQ tight stays at 1.0). The maximum is 1.5 in ChromIQ tight and 6.0 in Quick check (it was 2.0 and 7.0; ChromIQ default stays at 3.0). And "Maximum ΔL*, single-colour ramps 30 % to 70 %", which no ChromIQ set judged before, now has a limit of 3.0 in ChromIQ default, 1.5 in ChromIQ tight and 6.0 in Quick check. The colour difference (ΔE00) limits, the ISO sets and the Custom ISO sets are unchanged. A report you saved keeps its limits and verdicts, and a limit you changed yourself in Preferences > Report limits keeps your number.
- Evenness across the page is judged on more charts, small cards among them (Basti's ruling, after jctay's 4 × 6 in card, forum post 149811). A page now counts for the evenness rows when its patches reach across at least 65 % of the paper's width and at least 65 % of its height. Before, the patches had to cover 60 % of the paper's area, and a small card lost too much of that to the instrument's fixed margins, although its patches were spread over the whole card. A chart that fills only half a page is still left out, and every built-in preset is decided exactly as before. A report you saved keeps its own note. (New texts, shown and waiting for approval.)
- Names are shown exactly as you typed them. The app's font turned an "x" between two digits into a multiplication sign, so a project called "Photo-4x6" showed as "Photo-4×6".
- Measurement Report, overview: the rows for white, black and the solid colours say what they are compared with, for example "Red ΔE00 (against the ideal colour)", so they are not mistaken for the much smaller "solid colours" figure further down. (New texts, shown and waiting for approval.)
- The window that renames a project has a title and text that say "project" where they mean the project, not "printer profile".
- Windows: the crash log names the ChromIQ version and notes when ChromIQ was closed normally, and the harmless messages that the Windows print dialog wrote into it are gone, so a real crash is easy to tell apart.
Fixed
- A press of the instrument's button behind the window at the end of a measurement reads nothing (Basti's hand test with a ColorMunki). While "All Strips Read", "All Patches Read" or "Some patches are still not read" was open, the instrument was still waiting for a reading, so a press of its button, and a slide, read a strip (or, patch by patch, a patch) again that was already read, and replaced its good reading in your measurement file. 4.3.9 did this too. Now the reader waits without reading while that window is open, and a press does nothing. The window's buttons work as before: Go to Build Profile Tab, Finish and Close end the measurement, and Re-read Individual Strips, Re-read Patches and Keep measuring let you go on reading. On the same occasion the reader no longer moves on to the next strip, one that is already read, after the reading that completes the chart.
- The arrow that shows which strip to read points at that strip on every chart. On a chart of very light patches it pointed at the small print down the right edge of the page instead, and on a page with only one strip it covered that strip's letter. While measuring pauses after a page, no arrow is shown, because nothing is waiting to be read.
- From Profile Gamut puts every grey step the profile can print on the chart again, up to about one patch in eight, spread evenly from the darkest to the lightest grey the profile reaches (forum post 149811). Since 4.3.5, on a printer whose black is not a neutral grey, the chart had only a few grey steps, bunched in the light half, and the Measurement Report's grey rows could not be judged on it. Charts you have already made are not changed; make the chart again to get the new grey steps.
- The Measurement Options keep their tick while a measurement runs. "Refine / resume" and "Suppress warning messages" are locked during a reading, and they looked switched off although they were in use.
- The Measure tab's fades are smooth. The new note and the "expected · measured" label fade in and out evenly.
Installation (Linux, beta): Download the tarball for your architecture (x86_64 for most desktops/laptops, aarch64 for ARM systems like Raspberry Pi 4/5). Extract with tar xzf ChromIQ-Linux-*.tar.gz, then run ./ChromIQ/ChromIQ. Requires ArgyllCMS — install via your package manager (sudo apt install argyll) or from argyllcms.com/downloadlinux.html.
☕ ChromIQ is free and always will be — if it saves you time or ink, a coffee is a kind way to say thanks. Completely optional, and the app stays fully featured either way.
