What's Changed

AppleTalk runs on the printer port. With -appletalk local the Macintosh has a LocalTalk network to itself, host joins it with the other izmacs on the same computer, and udp with the izmacs and Mini vMacs of the local network, over LocalTalk over UDP. Two machines can share disks with the File Sharing of System 7.

-share <folder> serves a folder of your computer with an AppleShare file server of izmac's own: the Macintosh finds it in the Chooser, logs in as a guest, and mounts it as a volume to read and write. Resource forks and Finder information are kept in AppleDouble files, and what changes in the folder shows in the machine's windows. -sharename names the server.

The keyboard is the one of the Plus, with its arrow keys and numeric keypad, mapped from yours.

-starttime "1987-03-02 10:00:00" starts the machine at a date and time of your choosing instead of yours, and keeps the file server on the machine's own time, so that two runs with the same disks and the same input do exactly the same.

A folder of your computer with MacBinary or BinHex files in it now puts them on the volume made for it as the files they hold. Apple HD SC Setup finds a blank disk image and formats it, a DiskCopy image with a resource fork in an archive is mounted, and the ImageWriter keeps its place when the pitch changes in draft text.

Things to do walks through what using a Macintosh Plus was like, step by step, with the pictures of izmac running: from the first steps with the Finder, MacPaint and MacWrite to installing System 6, HyperCard, ResEdit, games, file sharing, and writing programs in BASIC, THINK Pascal and MPW. The manual has a new page, Speed, the clock and the tracers.

For programs that drive izmac, the operator package moves the mouse, types and chooses from menus, and the activities package records screenshots and animated GIFs of what happens.

What's Changed

Old Macintosh software can be run the way it is downloaded. Archives in BinHex, MacBinary, zip, gzip, StuffIt, Compact Pro, 7-Zip and RAR are unpacked, as many levels deep as it takes, and the disk images inside are attached. StuffIt and the other archivers need unar installed (brew install unar). Padded 401K or 807K diskette images are trimmed back to size.

Applications, documents and host folders that are not disk images are put on a new HFS volume made for them, keeping resource forks, types and creators. It is an 800K diskette when they fit, and a hard disk when they do not. Folders and archives can also be dropped on the window.

Inspired by macprep.

The images izmac makes live in memory and are lost when it stops. With -persist they are kept as izmac_ files in the working directory and used again on the next run.

Choosing Shut Down in the Finder closes izmac on Systems that show the "switch off" message. On older Systems the machine restarts to the flashing question mark disk, as the real one did. Diskettes are now also written back when the window is closed.

Pull requests merged

  • Take disk images out of the archives they are published in by @ivanizag in #13
  • Close the window once the machine has been shut down by @ivanizag in #15
  • Put files that are not disk images on a volume of their own by @ivanizag in #14

What's Changed

By default the host mouse position transitions smoothly to the emulated Macintosh Plus. A command line parameter is available to revert back to mouse pointer capture.
An emulated ImageWriter II printer is connected to the printer port. Printed images are rendered as png files on the host.

Pull requests merged

  • Put the pointer where the host points it by @ivanizag in #12
  • Print to an ImageWriter on the serial port by @ivanizag in #11

What's new

Diskettes. Both drives are emulated now, the internal one and the external.
A plain 400K or 800K image works, as does a DiskCopy 4.2 one. Reading, writing
and formatting all work, and a diskette is written back to the file it came from
when the drive stops. In the window, dropping an image on it puts the diskette in
a free drive and the menu on F10 takes one out.

izmac -floppy system.dsk mydisk.img

Hard disks that carry no driver. Most of the images that circulate are the
HFS volume and nothing else, made for emulators that patch the ROM to add a disk
driver of their own. izmac runs an unpatched ROM, so it makes up the driver
descriptor map and the partition map as the disk is attached, and writes nothing
to the file. The SCSI driver is the one part that can not be made up: it is
Apple's, so izmac carries none and fetches one the way it fetches the ROM, the
first time a disk turns out to want it.

izmac volume.dsk

Copy and paste. The clipboard is shared with the host both ways, text only.
A copy on the machine reaches the host on its own, and the clipboard of the host
is handed to the machine when the window is given the focus, or on F11 to force
it. It arrives as the clipboard of the machine, so it is the application that
pastes it. -clipboard=false keeps them apart.

Something to boot with. With no disk image named, a MacPaint diskette is
downloaded and kept as macpaint.dsk, so izmac on its own comes up with
something to use rather than a blinking question mark.

A manual. doc/manual.md
covers the disks, the keyboard and the mouse, every option, and what to do when
something does not work.

Fixed

  • Double clicks are seen as double clicks at any speed. The Toolbox tells one
from two single clicks by the ticks between them, and a tick comes from the
vertical blanking, counted in emulated cycles; running free the machine got
through hundreds of them in the moment a person leaves between two clicks. A
button transition now holds the machine to its 7.8336MHz for a second. The
hold only ever slows the machine down, so a speed set below the real one is
    left where it was put.
  • The parameter RAM starts with AppleTalk off, which is what a Plus with nothing
plugged into the printer port expects.
  • The window is named izmac - A Macintosh Plus emulator.
