Zed 1.21.0 + Claude Code and Codex IDE (unofficial)
Unofficial build of Zed with native Claude Code and Codex IDE integration.
Not affiliated with or endorsed by Zed Industries.
Zed 1.21.0 plus crates/claude_code_ide, built from e1248f771898afb5caf72ab3916bcbce1315c728.
Run the unmodified claude CLI in Zed's integrated terminal and it connects
on its own — diagnostics, open-file and Keep/Reject diffs appear in the editor.
Codex integration (experimental)
This build includes the native Codex provider. Run the unmodified Codex
CLI in a local project opened in Zed, then use /ide on and /ide status.
The provider supplies the active file, open tabs and live selections,
including unsaved selected text. Zed's codex: show status action
reports provider registration and context requests.
Protocol compatibility was checked against Codex CLI 0.153.4. Both
integrations have been exercised live against earlier builds on macOS
and Windows; on Linux the binary has only ever been started in CI, never
used with a running CLI. A green build alone does not establish runtime
compatibility. Whether this build was tested live, and what was
covered, is recorded under its tag in
the changelog;
the protocol evidence and remaining acceptance gates are in
CODEX.md.
Everything that differs from official Zed, and nothing else:
v1.21.0 ... this build.
The integration lives in crates/claude_code_ide, with startup and terminal
wiring in existing Zed code. The same
diff is attached as zed-claude-code-cc-v1.21.0-1.diff.gz -- gunzip it and
git apply it to a checkout of upstream v1.21.0 to rebuild this
from source yourself.
Install — Windows
Unzip into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\ZedDev and run zed.exe from there.
conpty.dll and OpenConsole.exe have to sit beside it or the integrated
terminal will not open. No installer, no admin rights, nothing added to PATH.
script/update-zed.ps1 handles later updates and adds a "Zed (Claude Code)"
Start Menu entry, which matters if you also have a local build — both are
otherwise just called "Zed".
Install — macOS (Apple silicon)
Open the .dmg and drag Zed Dev.app to /Applications. The build is
unsigned, so Gatekeeper quarantines it — clear that once, or macOS reports
the app as damaged:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Zed Dev.app"
It installs alongside official Zed rather than replacing it. Both read the
same settings, in ~/Library/Application Support/Zed; only the workspace
database is kept apart (db/0-dev against db/0-stable), so open tabs and
window layout do not bleed between the two.
Install — Linux
sudo apt install libasound2t64 # libasound2 on releases before 24.04
tar -xzf zed-claude-code-linux-x86_64.tar.gz -C ~/.local
ln -sf ~/.local/zed-dev.app/bin/zed ~/.local/bin/zed
libstdc++ and most other shared libraries are bundled alongside the binary,
but ALSA is not — upstream's packaging assumes it is present, as it is on
any desktop with audio. Without it the editor fails to start with
error while loading shared libraries: libasound.so.2, which does not say
what to install.
Built on Ubuntu 24.04, so glibc 2.39 is the floor. Verified: it resolves
on 24.04 and fails on Ubuntu 22.04 (glibc 2.35) and Debian 12 (2.36), both
wanting GLIBC_2.38 and GLIBC_2.39.
Verify the download
Every asset ships a .sha256 beside it:
sha256sum -c <asset>.sha256
These binaries are unsigned. The source is this repository at the commit
above, and can be rebuilt from it.
Updates
A dev-channel build, so Zed's own auto-updater is off deliberately: a
stable-channel build would download official Zed over this one and silently
discard the patch. To update, close Zed and unzip a newer release over the
top.
Why prerelease
Published as a prerelease, then promoted to /releases/latest in the same
run -- promotion only happens after every platform's build and channel
guard has passed. Updaters follow /releases/latest, so a demoted
release (gh release edit <tag> --prerelease=true) disappears from
their view on their next run.

Zed 1.20.2 plus crates/claude_code_ide, built from 1559a01d885816d60015fdcfcf575dc504434401.

Zed 1.18.1 + Claude Code and Codex IDE (unofficial)
Unofficial build of Zed with native Claude Code and Codex IDE integration.
Not affiliated with or endorsed by Zed Industries.
Zed 1.18.1 plus crates/claude_code_ide, built from 30433072a643dcd84c4d120f7eea729eb09a1632.
Run the unmodified claude CLI in Zed's integrated terminal and it connects
on its own — diagnostics, open-file and Keep/Reject diffs appear in the editor.
Those paths were verified live on macOS and Windows against this build
(2026-09-08): auto-connect, selection push, diagnostics from both language
servers, the CLI's post-edit diagnostics, the cmd-alt-k mention and every
Keep/Reject diff outcome.
Live application acceptance testing has passed on macOS and Windows
(2026-09-08: Codex CLI /ide toggles, fresh selections with the
terminal focused including Unicode and multi-line text, file switching
and closing, nested workspace roots; on Windows both with the Codex
desktop app hosting the router and with Zed hosting the pipe). Linux is
still untested live; a successful build alone does not establish
runtime compatibility there.
See the implementation and testing notes.
