Manga Reader 3.0.0

Manga Reader 3.0.0 is a major modernization of the app. The desktop foundation is still Electron, but the renderer has been rebuilt around a modern React and TypeScript stack, with a refreshed component system and a more maintainable structure for future improvements.

A modernized app

From a legacy renderer to React and TypeScript

The previous interface was built with plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. In 3.0.0, the renderer has moved to React 18 and TypeScript.

The interface is now organized into focused views and reusable components, including the library, reader, history, lock screen, and settings. TypeScript also adds clearer contracts between UI components and app state, helping make future changes easier to develop and maintain.

Tailwind CSS for styling

The new interface uses Tailwind CSS for its styling foundation. Instead of relying on a large collection of one-off styles, components can share consistent spacing, layout, and visual tokens.

This makes it easier to refine the interface as a whole and to build new screens that feel like part of the same application. Theme and accent-color settings continue to flow through the app’s theme system.

shadcn/ui-style components and Radix primitives

The app now uses reusable shadcn/ui-style components, built with Radix UI primitives and styled with Tailwind.

Radix provides accessible foundations for interactive controls such as dialogs, selects, sliders, switches, and tabs. The app’s components provide a consistent visual layer on top, so those controls fit the Manga Reader interface rather than feeling like unrelated widgets.

A clearer state and process structure

Zustand manages renderer state, keeping library, settings, and reading interactions organized. Framer Motion supports interface transitions.

Electron’s main, preload, and renderer processes remain separated. Filesystem and archive operations stay in the main process and are exposed to the UI through the preload API, rather than giving the renderer direct access to Node.js APIs.

Reading and library features

  • Browse a local manga library and import folders
  • Read manga from image-based collections and supported archives, including CBZ/ZIP and CBR/RAR
  • View covers and collection metadata
  • Resume from saved reading progress and history
  • Use bookmarks and adjust reading preferences
  • Optionally protect app access with a PIN
  • Customize the accent color and interface settings

Existing data

The app retains compatibility with the previous version’s stored library and progress data. Existing library entries, reading progress, bookmarks, and PIN settings can carry over using the same store keys and disk layout.

The app PIN protects access to the interface; it does not encrypt manga files stored on disk.
