v3.3.1
macOS GUI installer app (for macOS 14+)
- Download
TimeCapsuleSMB.app.zipbelow- The zip file for v3.3.1 is now added. The original release lacked the zip file for a few hours.
- Can use your old AFP backups, with native Apple metadata support on HFS
What's Changed
- Modify Samba to protect against a macOS bug that could write SMB request headers into file data after a connection stall. Let macOS reconnect and resend the affected writes (#221)
- Device discovery and setup
- Configure discovered devices over link-local IPv6 when their LAN address doesn't answer, including when the Mac is on a different IPv4 subnet of the same local network
- Accept device hostnames that resolve to link-local addresses, and preserve the interface name in IPv6 targets such as
fe80::1%en0 - Finish one-off Bonjour address lookups sooner and normalize IPv6 addresses consistently
- Check the AirPort admin password against the device before making changes. The device's SSH login only compares the first 8 characters, so a wrong password could pass
- Device commands stop before connecting when
sshpassis missing on the computer - Bootstrap shows install progress, installs only
sshpasson Intel Macs, and points to the macOS app when tools can't be installed
- Clearer connection and checkup messages
- Explain when a VPN, firewall or security app on the Mac drops the connection before it reaches the device
- Tell you to join the device's main network when setup cannot reach it, or Checkup finds you on a WAN or guest network where disk sharing is disabled
- Checkup reports missing local tools even before the device is configured
- Fix false AFP advertising failures caused by cached Bonjour records
- Fix NetBIOS check failures when only the device's link-local IPv4 address is reachable
- Keep startup timing and reported uptime accurate when the device adjusts its clock after boot
- Firmware and reboot reliability
- Allow up to 10 minutes for a device to reboot, then a separate 4 minutes for SSH to become available
- Wait up to 10 minutes for firmware writes to finish, avoiding premature failure messages while the device is still writing
- Flash Restore can now repair a damaged secondary (backup) firmware bank with the newest Apple firmware for the device. It verifies the result, leaves the primary bank unchanged and needs no reboot
- Guide you to restore a damaged backup firmware bank before installing the boot hook, and refuse a restore when independent reads disagree
- Performance and hardening
- Faster SMB signing and encryption on NetBSD 6 devices (up to 15%)
- NetBSD 4 Samba is built with stack protection, and its service and rsync binaries are smaller
- macOS app
- Show the saved SSH target throughout the app, including when connecting over link-local IPv6
- Add clear confirmations and completion messages for backup firmware bank repairs
