v0.1.5 – restore in the bear room and Quit fixed
Two crashes reported by players, fixed.
- Restoring a game saved in the bee/bear room no longer locks up. The interpreter's sound code touched a sound that was no longer in memory; harmless on the Amiga, a crash on the ST. Existing saves load fine with this version.
- Quit no longer crashes (the Quit button on the "game over" box and in the controls panel). The game now hands the machine back cleanly and you return to the desktop.
Changed file: KQ5ST.PRG; the game data is the same as v0.1.4.
Download KQ5ST-v0.1.5.zip, copy the KQ5ST folder to a hard disk (or a GEMDOS hard-disk folder in Hatari / Steem SSE) and run KQ5ST.PRG. Instructions are in READ_ME.TXT.
- Atari STE recommended (a plain ST works, a bit slower), 4 MB RAM, colour low resolution
- Esc or both mouse buttons skip the Sierra logo and the title song
- Play-tested from the opening through the town, the forest and the desert (oasis, temple, bandits' tent); later rooms may still crash. Please report crashes, ideally with the save file.
- Known gaps: music about 17% slow (50 Hz), no percussion, some sounds silent; no floppy version yet
King's Quest V © 1990 Sierra On-Line, Inc.; the game data, artwork and the interpreter inside KQ5ST.PRG are Sierra's (rights now with Activision / Microsoft). Non-commercial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by them. See the README for details.
v0.1.4 – no more double-click walk skip
Double-click walk skip removed. Double-clicking no longer makes Graham arrive at once. The shortcut caused bugs here and there, and King's Quest V is about the journey, not speed. A double-click is now two ordinary clicks. Changed files: KQ5ST.PRG and 996.SCR; the rest of the game data is the same as v0.1.3.
Download KQ5ST-v0.1.4.zip, copy the KQ5ST folder to a hard disk (or a GEMDOS hard-disk folder in Hatari / Steem SSE) and run KQ5ST.PRG. Instructions are in READ_ME.TXT.
- Includes the v0.1.3 fast start-up from a real hard disk and the v0.1.2 fix for real hardware and Steem
- Esc or both mouse buttons still skip the Sierra logo and the title song
- Atari STE recommended (a plain ST works, a bit slower), 4 MB RAM, colour low resolution
- Play-tested from the opening through the town, the forest and the desert (oasis, temple, bandits' tent); later rooms may still crash
- Known gaps: music about 17% slow (50 Hz), no percussion, some sounds silent; no floppy version yet

v0.1.3 – faster start-up from hard disk
Much faster start-up from a real hard disk. v0.1.2 showed a black screen with only the mouse pointer for up to about two minutes before the Sierra logo, because TOS searched the 600-file game folder for every file the game looked for. The folder is now read once at start-up, and the resource files are kept open. In an emulated AHDI hard disk the wait went from about 94 to about 19 seconds. Only KQ5ST.PRG changed; the game data is the same as v0.1.0.
Download KQ5ST-v0.1.3.zip, copy the KQ5ST folder to a hard disk (or a GEMDOS hard-disk folder in Hatari / Steem SSE) and run KQ5ST.PRG. Instructions are in READ_ME.TXT.
- Includes the v0.1.2 fix for the crash on real hardware and Steem ("Illegal instruction at $000030")
- Atari STE recommended (a plain ST works, a bit slower), 4 MB RAM, colour low resolution
- Tested in Hatari (STE, TOS 1.62, 4 MB) on its GEMDOS drive and on an AHDI 6.061 ACSI hard-disk image, NatFeats on and off; save and restore tested in Hatari; Steem SSE and real hardware: please report
- Play-tested from the opening through the town, the forest and the desert (oasis, temple, bandits' tent); later rooms may still crash
- Known gaps: music about 17% slow (50 Hz), no percussion, some sounds silent; no floppy version yet

v0.1.2 – real hard disks
Fixes the crash on real hardware and Steem SSE (black screen with the mouse pointer, then "Illegal instruction at $000030"). TOS can load the program at an address that is not a multiple of 4, which broke the Amiga interpreter's pointers; Hatari's emulated hard drive never did that, so it went unnoticed. Only KQ5ST.PRG changed; the game data is the same as v0.1.0.
Download KQ5ST-v0.1.2.zip, copy the KQ5ST folder to a hard disk (or a GEMDOS hard-disk folder in Hatari / Steem SSE) and run KQ5ST.PRG. Instructions are in READ_ME.TXT.
- Start-up from a real hard disk is slow: the screen stays black with only the mouse pointer for up to about two minutes before the Sierra logo. Please wait; this will be improved.
- Atari STE recommended (a plain ST works, a bit slower), 4 MB RAM, colour low resolution
- Tested in Hatari (STE, TOS 1.62, 4 MB) on its GEMDOS drive and on an AHDI 6.061 ACSI hard-disk image, NatFeats on and off; Steem SSE and real hardware: please report
- Play-tested from the opening through the town, the forest and the desert (oasis, temple, bandits' tent); later rooms may still crash

v0.1.1 – runs outside Hatari
Fixes 4 bombs right at start-up on real hardware, Steem and Hatari without NatFeats (v0.1.0 only ran in Hatari with NatFeats enabled). Debug text no longer scrolls over the screen either. Only KQ5ST.PRG changed; the game data is the same as v0.1.0.
Download KQ5ST-v0.1.1.zip, copy the KQ5ST folder to a hard disk (or a GEMDOS hard-disk folder in Hatari / Steem SSE) and run KQ5ST.PRG. Instructions are in READ_ME.TXT.
- Atari STE recommended (a plain ST works, a bit slower), 4 MB RAM, colour low resolution
- Tested in Hatari (STE, TOS 1.62, 4 MB, NatFeats on and off); Steem SSE and real hardware: please report
- Play-tested from the opening through the town, the forest and the desert (oasis, temple, bandits' tent); later rooms may still crash

- Tested in Hatari (STE, TOS 1.62, 4 MB); Steem SSE and real hardware not yet tested
- Play-tested from the opening through the town, the forest and the desert (oasis, temple, bandits' tent); later rooms may still crash
