Back to You v1.5.1

Choose a tag to compare

@jasonrundell jasonrundell released this 09 Sep 18:10
3ea690c

Fixes the decision clip playing twice, a few seconds apart, whenever Claude opens the multiple-choice picker. The picker is rendered as a permission dialog, which already raises a permission_prompt notification after six seconds, so the PreToolUse hook that also fired on it was a duplicate. It is no longer wired, and reinstalling removes the entry. Recorded in ADR 0002. (#64)

Upgrade with npx backtoyou, then start a new session: hooks are snapshotted at session start.

The architecture release: nothing new to hear, everything easier to trust. The installer now tells you when a pack will stay quiet on failures — a note on install or switch when a pack has no error clips — and a failed install reports exactly what was and wasn't changed instead of guessing. On Windows, the two hooks now share one play-lib.ps1, so they can no longer drift apart, and playback failures land in ~/.claude/.backtoyou-playback-error in the same byte format on every platform.

Under the hood: the CLI is testable end to end, hook-classifier parity and category wiring are checked in CI instead of promised in comments, and the test suite grew from 51 to 94 cases — including the first automated PowerShell coverage, run against the real hooks. Upgrade with npx backtoyou.

What's Changed

  • Deepen the CLI: typed install steps and a testable main in #55
  • Extract a shared play-lib.ps1 for the Windows hooks in #57
  • Check the classifier parity instead of promising it in #58
  • One table for the category vocabulary in #59
  • Resolve play-lib's world at call time, and test the probe chain in #60
  • Cleanup pass: copy out of plan.js, one backup name, fewer exports in #61
  • Bump to 1.5.0 in #62

Two new voice packs — good-boy and uncle-jim — and a second decision-needed take, "Question for you.", in every pack but jay-run. The decision hook now alternates between two lines at random.

Six packs ship now. Upgrade with npx backtoyou and pick one.

One sound less. That's the whole release.

What's changed

  • No more "Subagent's done." v1.1.1 fixed this sound doubling up with task-complete; v1.3.0 admits it shouldn't have been playing at all. A subagent finishing isn't a moment that wants you back — the turn is still running — and a turn that fans out to several of them announced every one. Even as a near-whisper it was the most repetitive sound in the set, repetitive enough to be a reason to turn the whole thing off, which costs you the sounds that do earn their place. The Stop clip at the end of the turn already covers it.
  • SubagentStop is unwired, and the subagent-done category is retired. Four wired events now, three sound categories: task-complete, decision-needed, error.
  • The double-clip suppression is gone with it. The Stop hook no longer has to check whether a subagent just finished, and nothing writes ~/.claude/.subagent-done-at any more.

Upgrading

npx backtoyou@latest

That unwires the event, deletes the clip, and clears the leftover marker file — one command, nothing to clean up by hand. Restart Claude Code afterwards.

If you added your own clips to a subagent-done folder, they're kept: the installer matches the files it shipped by exact path and never deletes a take you added. They just won't play any more, since no hook reads that folder. Move them somewhere that does, or delete the folder yourself.

Install

One command, the same on macOS, Windows and Linux:

npx backtoyou

You'll be asked to pick a voice pack — claude, gigatron, jay-run, or mistress-of-pain. Needs Node.js and nothing else. back-to-you.zip below is here if you'd rather not use npx; extract it and run install.sh (macOS/Linux) or install.bat (Windows).

Changed your mind later? Run it again and pick a different pack. Want it gone? npx backtoyou --uninstall.

A quiet fix for a noisy duplicate.

What's fixed

  • No more double "done" sound. SubagentStop and Stop are distinct Claude Code events, but when a subagent was the last thing a turn did, they fired moments apart — so subagent-done played and then task-complete played right after it, two "done" clips for what read as one completion. The Stop hook now skips its own clip when a subagent-done clip played within the last 5 seconds. A real decision-needed question still always plays — that's a distinct request for input, not a duplicate announcement.

Install

  • Windows — download back-to-you-windows.zip below, extract it, double-click install.bat.
  • macOS — git clone is the recommended path (see the README); back-to-you-macos.zip is here too if you'd rather not clone.

Three new voice packs, and an installer that lets you pick one.

What's new

  • Three new voice packs — gigatron, jay-run, and mistress-of-pain join claude, each with its own take on the same four lines (task complete, decision needed, error, subagent done).
  • Pick a pack at install time. Run the installer with no arguments and it lists what's on disk and asks which to activate — no need to already know a pack's folder name. Naming one on the command line (./install.sh gigatron) still skips the prompt, for scripted installs.
  • SessionStart is now unwired. It fired on every new session — about four times an hour in testing, 69% of every sound heard — and was the least useful of the five hooks. Reinstalling over an existing v1.0.0 install removes it automatically.
  • Settings merge on both platforms is now self-healing: it strips stale entries from older installs (a moved path, a missing timeout, an old matcher) and rewrites them fresh, without touching hooks that belong to you.

Also

  • Each pack now ships one clip per hook instead of several random variants — shorter to review, easier to keep consistent across packs. Drop extra .mp3/.wav files into any sounds/<pack>/<category>/ folder to bring random variety back.
  • README documents all four packs and the new install flow.

Install

  • Windows — download back-to-you-windows.zip below, extract it, double-click install.bat.
  • macOS — git clone is the recommended path (see the README); back-to-you-macos.zip is here too if you'd rather not clone.

A voice for Claude Code.

You kick off a refactor, switch to your browser, and forget the terminal exists. Ten minutes later Claude has been waiting on a yes/no the whole time.

Back to You gives Claude Code a quiet voice. It says "Done." when a task finishes and "Your call." when it needs a decision — short, flat, never enthusiastic, like a competent engineer sitting beside you. Fifteen clips across five moments (task complete, decision needed, error, subagent done, session start), one picked at random each time so it never gets stale. Every clip is original audio made for this, not game sounds borrowed from elsewhere.

Install

  • Windows — download back-to-you-windows.zip below, extract it, double-click install.bat.
  • macOS — new, lightly tested. git clone is the recommended path (see the README); back-to-you-macos.zip is here too if you'd rather not clone.
