Optional Windows tweaks that make a boot-to-Steam PC feel more like a console.
Method A (UI):
- Win+R →
netplwiz - Uncheck “Users must enter a user name and password…”
- Apply → enter password → reboot
If the checkbox is missing, disable Windows Hello-only sign-in in:
- Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options
Method B (registry):
Stores password in registry (reversible). Only do this on trusted machines.
- HKLM...\Winlogon: AutoAdminLogon=1, DefaultUserName, DefaultPassword, DefaultDomainName
- Settings → Personalization → Background → Solid color → Black
- Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Require sign-in → Never
- Desktop right click → View → uncheck “Show desktop icons”
- Settings → Apps → Startup (or Task Manager → Startup apps)
- Control Panel → User Accounts → Change User Account Control settings → Never notify
Reduces security; only for a dedicated couch PC.
- Disable noisy notifications
- Keep display scaling consistent
No support is provided for SteamShell. Use at your own risk — it replaces the Windows shell.
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E is the emergency restore.
