- Git is versitle tool that can used on many OSes and can be used locally if you want. Github offers an extensive features and a community to enchance sharing but it is not the only option. Though smaller there are other platforms such as GitLab or BitBucket that also offer their own community or features. You can even host your repo yourself on a server if you wish.
